Benefits misinformation spreads online as millions grapple with cost of living

Misinformation about benefits, money and government policy has likely been seen by hundreds of thousands of people as fake news has been allowed to feature amongst Google's top-ranking search results. The web giant's rotation of articles featured on its search engine and most prominent recommendation services has included several peddling incorrect information on crucial financial news relating to UK readers. Many of these sites falsely claim that the Cost of Living Payment that was administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) between 2022 and 2024 is returning this year, which is not true. The authors of the articles even falsely state that people on certain commonly-claimed benefits, such as Universal Credit and Pension Credit, can expect automatic payments worth up to £500 in the coming months. Another fake story sees WASPI campaigners told that they can expect a 'one-off, tax-free compensation payment' worth thousands, while yet another claims that next years' planned state pension age increase to 67 has been cancelled. The owners of these web pages are likely carrying out this activity with the aim of attracting as many readers as possible to their sites with sensational and false headlines. Using knowledge of Google 's website-ranking system to manipulate search results, they also focus content on topics that its open-source data shows is highly searched for. Visitors are shown hundreds of intrusive ads on the pages, the revenue from which becomes more valuable to the site owner the more a website is visited. The Independent has identified several sites that have been sharing false information that has been highly-ranked by Google's algorithm. None of those uncovered are based in the UK. Anna Stevenson, Benefits Expert at Turn2us, said: 'These sites prey on people's worries at a time when so many of us are feeling the pressure of the cost-of-living crisis, and that's really unfair. 'If you see a headline about a new payment or benefit, take a moment to check where it's coming from. Just because it's displayed on Google doesn't make it trustworthy, stick to established and authentic sources like . websites or reputable charities; if you can't find the same information there, it's unlikely to be legitimate.' A spokesperson for Google said: 'We see billions of search queries every day and we design our ranking systems to surface high quality information at the top of Search. Our spam-fighting systems aggressively fight mass-produced, low-quality content, keeping Search 99% spam-free and we take appropriate action against pages that violate our policies.' The owners of all websites shown in this article were approached for comment. Only one, 'Tamil Nadu Weatherman', has removed its article, which carried false information about the Cost of Living Payment, saying it was 'never [their] intention to spread false information.' A spokesperson said: 'Thank you for reaching out and bringing this to my attention. After carefully reviewing the articles you highlighted, I acknowledge that the information published may not have been accurate. This was an oversight on my part, and I sincerely regret any confusion it may have caused. 'Going forward, I will ensure that all such content is cross-checked with official government websites before publication. Accuracy and trust are very important to me, and I appreciate you raising this issue so I could address it promptly.'

Creepy moment on-duty cop steals woman's underwear while searching her home

THIS is the creepy moment an on-duty cop stole a woman's underwear while searching her home. Marcin Zielinski was captured rifling through the victim's belongings before focusing on a chest of drawers. 3 3 The 27-year-old then takes a pair of underwear from inside and stuffs it inside his pocket before shutting the drawer. Hertfordshire Constabulary PC Zielinski then left the bedroom with the pants still inside his uniform. He has now been jailed for four months after pleading guilty to one charge of theft and a charge of corrupt/improper exercise of police powers and privileges by a constable. Cambridge Crown Court heard Zielinski was carrying out a Section 32 search at a home in Stevenage on September 12, 2024. A woman living at the address had been arrested in connection with an unrelated matter and was later released with no further action taken. Zielinski resigned from the force while he was still under investigation in November 2024. Hertfordshire Constabulary Assistant Chief Constable Genna Telfer said: "Zielinski has let down the public of Hertfordshire, the police service as a whole and his former colleagues, who act with professionalism and integrity. "His criminal behaviour damages the reputation of policing and represents a fundamental betrayal of the public and the values for which the police service stands." 3

Moment foul-mouthed Jet2 passenger is arrested on flight after squaring up to holidaymakers who cheer him off plane

SHOCKING footage has captured the moment a rowdy passenger was arrested by cops after a flight was diverted to a popular UK airport. The Jet2 flight, which took off from Leeds Bradford at 6.41pm last night, was heading for the Spanish hotspot of Alicante when it had to make a dramatic U-turn just 100 miles in. 5 5 5 The plane was flying above Leicester when a 'disruptive incident' erupted onboard involving a foul-mouthed passenger. Stunned travellers were left fuming as the flight - carrying up to 188 passengers - was delayed by around four hours after the Boeing 737 was forced to return back to Leeds Airport. Footage from onboard shows a 30-year-old man dressed in an orange T-shirt and jeans, smirking and taunting fellow passengers in the aisle. He is then seen shouting: 'Put your phone down and fight one on one.' One passenger had jumped out of their seat, while others could be heard trying to calm the situation, warning the man he'd get kicked off. The yob responded by sticking out his tongue and pounding his chest before going on a foul-mouthed rant. Another traveller tried to reason with fellow holidaymakers: 'Don't rise to it. Let him get chucked off.' Moments later, cheers erupted as uniformed cops stormed the plane at Leeds Bradford. Laughter and jeers rang out as passengers spotted officers boarding, with one saying: 'Look behind ya, lad! Look behind ya, big boy! You w****r!' The troublemaker's cocky grin was wiped clean as he spotted police heading his way. He briefly squared up to another man onboard before passengers began yelling: 'Arrest him now!' Shock moment 'drunk' pilot who 'reeked of booze' is escorted by cops from cockpit moments before takeoff The whole plane broke into applause as he was finally hauled off, with one person shouting: 'In a bit, lad!' Footage from outside the aircraft shows him being spoken to by three officers on the tarmac, with one appearing to search him. Cops confirmed to The Sun that the man was charged with entering an aircraft while drunk. He was bailed to appear before Leeds magistrates on Monday, 8 September. The passenger has also received a six-month flying ban, Jet2 confirmed. The plane was forced to stay on the ground until it eventually took off again at around 11pm, more than four hours after its scheduled departure time. A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson told The Sun: "A 30-year-old man from Doncaster has been charged with entering an aircraft while drunk. "He has been bailed to appear before Leeds magistrates on Monday, 8 September." A Jet2 spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a disruptive passenger has received a six-month flying ban with us, following their appalling behaviour which led to flight LS491 from Leeds Bradford to Alicante having to return to Leeds Bradford so that police could offload them. "As a family friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive passenger behaviour." 5 5
