Lefthanded reliever Chris Murphy reinstated to roster after missing 2024 with torn elbow ligament

Boston Globe2 days ago

Murphy appeared in 11 games in a rehabilitation assignment that saw him pitch for Greenville, Portland, and Worcester. He allowed eight runs on 16 hits and nine walks over 14⅔ innings, striking out 17.
Murphy can work consecutive days if needed, manager
Alex Cora
said. The Sox now have four lefthanders in the bullpen.
Murphy replaced righthander
Luis Guerrero
, who landed on the injured list with an elbow strain. Guerrero allowed four runs on four hits and three walks over one inning in his last two appearances.

Righthander
Justin Slaten
was moved to the 60-day injured list to create a spot for Murphy on the 40-man roster.
That is a concern. Slaten was put on the 15-day IL on June 1 (retroactive to May 29) with what was described as shoulder inflammation. At the time, the Sox described the IL stint as a precaution because of soreness.
'He started playing catch [on Friday]. It was slower than expected. He wasn't feeling great,' Cora said. 'Every test he felt weak with his shoulder.'
Slaten will not be eligible to return until July 28.
'Timing wise, he's going to take that,' Cora said. 'That's why we have to make the move.'

Bregman takes the field
Alex Bregman
added ground balls to his work as he continues to make progress coming back from a strained right quad.
Bregman, who was not on the last road trip, also offered his first comments on the
Rafael Devers
trade.
'I really enjoyed every second of playing with him and being his teammate,' Bregman said. 'I think he's one of the smarter ballplayers I've ever played with. He's really good.
'Obviously, I was shocked. But it's well above my pay grade and what I'm supposed to do.'
Hicks closer
Jordan Hicks
has a locker in the clubhouse — Devers's old one, actually — but not a place on the roster. That could change in the next day or two.
Hicks was on the injured list at the time of the trade with an inflamed right big toe. He was sent to Worcester for rehab work and pitched in two games.
He had a scoreless inning on Friday. 'He felt clean,' Cora said.
Hicks could join the major league roster as soon as Monday.
Yoshida ready to go
Masataka Yoshida
is set to start a rehab assignment on Tuesday with Worcester at Polar Park. 'We'll see how many at-bats he needs,' Cora said. 'He's moving well; his swing feels great.' Yoshida has been on the injured list all season recovering from shoulder surgery. They were preparing him to play the outfield, which is now less of a factor with Devers traded. 'When he feels comfortable, he'll be with us,' Cora said … Cora mentioned Bregman,
Aroldis Chapman
,
Garrett Crochet
, and
Carlos Narváez
as the only potential All-Stars on the roster. Bregman is a finalist at third base, but would likely not be able to play if selected.

Former Wisconsin basketball star agrees to one-year deal with Phoenix Suns

Former Wisconsin Badgers basketball star Nigel Hayes-Davis has agreed to a one-year contract with the Phoenix Suns, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The deal is fully guaranteed. It marks Hayes-Davis' first taste of NBA action since he played five games with the Sacramento Kings during the 2017-18 slate. The news arrives roughly one month after the Badger alumnus wrapped up a spectacular season with Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in Turkey. Hayes-Davis capped off the 2024-25 EuroLeague campaign with an 81-70 victory over Monaco, securing him EuroLeague Final Four MVP honors and the club's first championship since 2017. Hayes-Davis' recent title followed another championship run last summer, when he pocketed a Turkish League Championship and MVP honor in Turkey's Basketbol Süper Ligi Finals. The Ohio native averaged over 17 points per game to snag finals MVP honors throughout the series, which ignited his return to professional basketball in the United States. Between his time in Europe, the former Badger suited up alongside the USA Men's National Team during its exhibition schedule before the Olympic crew won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Outside of practice, he played exhibitions in Las Vegas, London and Abu Dhabi alongside a bevy of NBA Hall of Famers, including now-teammate Devin Booker. Hayes-Davis reportedly drew interest from the Boston Celtics' head coach Joe Mazulla, who was spotted in Istanbul for the Bachesehir - Fenerbahçe game in early June. While the Celtics didn't bite, another franchise did. The former Wisconsin standout suited up in nine games for the Kings, Lakers and Raptors during the 2017-18 slate following his career in Madison, but he didn't experience as much success as he did in college. His European basketball journey appears to have rejuvenated his career, and now he will look to compete alongside players like Booker, Jalen Green, Bradley Beal, Dillon Brooks and Mark Williams. During his time in Madison, Hayes-Davis was named Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year (2014), a two-time third-team All-Big Ten (2015, 2017) honoree and an All-Big Ten first team selection in 2016. He, along with Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker, wound up in the 2015 NCAA title game against the Duke Blue Devils during one of the most memorable runs in franchise history. Which 10 Players Have the Most Hits in MLB History?

Ted Williams, one of baseball's greatest players, said the hardest thing to do is to hit a baseball. He might be right. Even the best hitters in MLB history fail to record a hit in most of their at-bats. The player with the best batting average in MLB history hit .366 in his career, meaning he failed to record a hit in nearly 45% of his at-bats. What's more, no player has hit .400 in a season since Williams did so in 1941. That said, you know you're special if you're among the top 10 in MLB hits. Let's take a look at who makes that list. 10. Paul Molitor: 3,319 Molitor was arguably one of the most consistent hitters of all time, recording 140 or more hits in 16 of his 21 seasons. A steady force in the Milwaukee Brewers' lineup for nearly two decades, Molitor also led the majors in hits on two occasions. 9. Albert Pujols: 3,384 MLB has seen an infusion of foreign-born stars over the last few decades. As of 2025, Pujols is the best hitter in that group. The St. Louis Cardinals icon has the most hits and home runs (703) for a foreign-born player. 8. Carl Yastrzemski: 3,419 "Yaz" had a swing made for Fenway Park, as evidenced by his hit total. The Boston Red Sox icon had a career .305 batting average at his home ballpark, while he led the majors in hits twice. He also led the majors in batting average on three occasions, holding a .285 career batting average. 7. Honus Wagner: 3,430 While some might know Wagner for being the face of the most popular trading card in baseball history, his prowess at the plate helped create value for the card. He had 16 seasons in which he had a batting average of at least .300, leading the National League in the stat eight times in his 21-year career. 6. Derek Jeter: 3,465 The New York Yankees have had several great hitters in their storied history. How else do you think they won 27 titles? Jeter has the most of any player to wear the pinstripes, hitting .310 in his historic career. His strong hitting ability was a key reason why the Yankees won their last five World Series titles, and his 3,000th hit was memorable as he hit a home run to reach the landmark. 5. Tris Speaker: 3,515 Speaker was not only one of the best hitters in MLB history, but he is also the league's doubles king. His 752 career doubles are the most of all time and nearly 50 more than any other player. Additionally, he recorded a batting average of .300 or better in 18 of his 22 seasons. 4. Stan Musial: 3,630 "Stan the Man's" hitting prowess helped him become one of the best hitters in MLB history. As he led the National League in hits on seven occasions, Musial was named an All-Star in every season he played (excluding his 12-game 1941 season), playing in the Midsummer Classic 21 times. 3. Hank Aaron: 3,771 MLB's home run king is also one of the best hitters in history. Aaron led the league in hits and batting average twice in his legendary career. He also finished in the top 10 in the National League in hits 13 times and batting average a dozen times. The most hits he had in a season came in 1959, recording 223 that year to go with a .355 batting average. 2. Ty Cobb: 4,191 Cobb might not be the all-time hits leader, but he is MLB's all-time batting average leader. His .366 batting average is the only career batting average over .360 in league history (min. 5,000 career plate appearances), as he led the majors in that stat on 12 occasions. In two of those years, Cobb had a batting average of .400, as he also led the majors in hits eight times. 1. Pete Rose: 4,256 Rose is the MLB's all-time hit king, leading the majors in hits on seven occasions in his historic career. While no one has more hits than Rose in league history, he became better known for his gambling scandal as a manager, which led MLB to ban him for life. That ban was lifted in 2025, making him eligible for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Check out all of our Daily Rankers . Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? NBA free agency opens with Spurs, Rockets, Hawks, Magic and Mavs among those making early moves

By TIM REYNOLDS Victor Wembanyama has another big man to help him out in San Antonio. The Houston Rockets continued their offseason overhaul. And Orlando and Atlanta made moves with eyes on contending this coming season on Monday as the NBA's free agency period got underway. The Spurs lured center Luke Kornet away from Boston with a four-year, $41 million deal, a person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team cannot announce the deal until the league's signing moratorium for most contracts is lifted on Sunday. Kornet was part of Boston's 2024 NBA title team and has shot 68% from the field in 205 games, mostly off the bench, over the last three regular seasons. He figures to add frontcourt depth to the Spurs, who are hoping to have Wembanyama — the 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year and an All-Star this past season — back and ready to go after he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in a shoulder back in February. The Rockets, meanwhile, added veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith on a four-year, $53 million deal shortly after free agency opened. ESPN first reported the deal, and a person with knowledge of the agreement confirmed the terms to AP. Houston becomes Finney-Smith's fourth team after stints with Dallas, Brooklyn and the Los Angeles Lakers. He'll be added to a Rockets club that earlier this summer landed Kevin Durant in a blockbuster trade with Phoenix, though that deal cannot receive formal approval from the NBA until next week. Finney-Smith averaged 8.7 points and was a 41% shooter from 3-point range this past season. ESPN also reported that the Rockets' run on free agents continued with the addition of center Clint Capela, who spent the first six years of his career in Houston before playing for the last five seasons in Atlanta. Capela agreed to a three-year deal with the Rockets, ESPN said. Dallas, which needed some point guard help especially because the newly re-signed Kyrie Irving — rehabbing from an ACL tear — may not be ready to play until about midseason, agreed with D'Angelo Russell on a two-year contract worth nearly $13 million. Russell would be part of the backcourt depth on a club with an imposing front line that, if healthy, would include No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis and promising young center Dereck Lively II. Atlanta added Nickeil Alexander-Walker from Minnesota on what will be a four-year, $62 million deal following a completion of a sign-and-trade with the Timberwolves. Minnesota will get a draft pick, cash considerations and will create a trade exception once the deal is finalized, a person with knowledge of the move told AP. The Magic, meanwhile, added Tyus Jones on a one-year deal. He joins an Orlando roster that already landed Desmond Bane from Memphis in a trade, and the Magic — who played long stretches last season without Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs because of injuries — should be a legit East contender this season if healthy. It was a big night for the Jones family: Tyus Jones' brother, Tre Jones, agreed Monday on a three-year deal to return to the Chicago Bulls. The free agency period officially opened at 6 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, but in actuality, was rolling long before that. LeBron James has already opted in to a $52.6 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers for this coming season, the Rockets traded for Durant — not a free agency move, obviously — and the Los Angeles Clippers saw James Harden decline his option in return for a new deal and a raise. There was even a surprise addition to free agency, with Portland announcing it has bought out the contract of former No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton, allowing him to sign with any team he chooses. And on Monday, even before the shopping window officially started, more deals: Nicolas Batum will come back to the Clippers, his agency said, on a two-year deal, while Joe Ingles agreed to return to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Deals like those could get done before the official start time because teams are allowed to negotiate with their own free agents once the NBA Finals are finished. In other deals confirmed by AP on Monday night: — Center Kevon Looney agreed to a two-year deal with New Orleans, after he spent his first 10 seasons with Golden State. — Guard Caris LeVert will sign a two-year deal worth nearly $15 million annually with the Detroit Pistons, a team that won 14 games in 2023-24 and then won 44 games to earn the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference this past season. The NBA announced Monday that it has set the salary cap for the coming season at $154.647 million, the maximum allowed 10% increase over the level for this past season. The tax level for the 2025-26 season is $187.895 million, the league said. — Julius Randle returns to the Timberwolves with a potential $100 million deal. — Bobby Portis stays with the Bucks, keeping the popular sixth man in Milwaukee. — Duncan Robinson terminates his contract with the Heat, though he may return. In very specific situations, teams can announce signings when completed. But in most situations, and this even applies to some draft-related trades (such as the one involving Durant going to Houston), teams won't be able to announce those until at least July 6. ___ AP Sports Writer Schuyler Dixon in Dallas contributed to this story. ___ AP NBA:
