Ed Sheeran's New Single Looks Like It's A Flop — But Don't Judge It Just Yet

Ed Sheeran's new album Play won't be released for months. The singer-songwriter has scheduled the full-length to drop in September, meaning he has the entire summer to dominate the charts, streaming platforms, and radio airwaves with catchy tunes. The forthcoming set brings him back to the top 40 sound that has made him one of the most successful musicians in that space of all time, and he's on the hunt for more massive hits.
Sheeran recently moved on from lead cut "Azizam" and shared the nostalgic "Old Phone." The tune debuts on two charts in the United Kingdom this week, though, in very low positions. That doesn't suggest the track isn't successful — actually, when context is applied, it seems to say exactly the opposite, even though some may see these rankings as disappointing.
"Old Phone" launches on the Official Singles Downloads chart at No. 87 this week. It comes in even lower on the Official Singles Sales list at No. 90.
While those positions are far from impressive — especially for someone as successful as Sheeran, and certainly in the U.K., where he remains one of the most famous artists in the business — some more information is needed to explain why they may actually be rather impressive.
The vast majority of albums and songs are released on Friday morning. That's when, in most markets, the official tracking week for charts begins. Musicians want a full seven days to rack up streams, sales, and radio attention in order to make their projects and tunes into hits, so they compete with one another on Fridays.
Some musicians, however, in an effort to grab media attention before the far-too-packed Fridays, will release music on Thursday. While that does undercut an initial tracking week — sometimes giving artists just a few hours in which to collect streams and sales — there are other benefits.
Sheeran dropped "Old Phone" midday on Thursday, May 1. That means that in just a few hours, the tune managed to still become one of the bestselling in the U.K. That type of performance is reserved only for the biggest names in the music industry, as most artists really need those full seven days in order to appear anywhere on the charts. The Future of Ed Sheeran's 'Old Phone'
When the Official Charts Company refreshes its rankings in a few days, there's a good chance that "Old Phone" will become a certified smash. It will certainly rocket up both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads rankings, where this time around it adds to Sheeran's growing list of favorites. He's now collected at least 79 hits on both tallies. The tune will also likely reach a number of other rankings, including those dedicated to streaming activity and the all-consumption Official Singles chart.
As "Old Phone" gets off to a slow start, "Azizam" — the lead single from Play — is performing very well. After a month on the charts, it's still living inside the top 10 on all four lists on which it appears. This frame, it holds at No. 2 on the Official Singles Downloads ranking, its highest position.

Excited gamers line up for hours as Nintendo Switch 2 launches with global shortfall expected

Gaming fans queued up for the launch of Nintendo's Switch 2 on Thursday, which is widely expected to be in short supply globally amid pent-up demand for the more powerful next-generation gaming device. 'The level of demand seems to be sky-high,' said Serkan Toto, founder of the Kantan Games consultancy. In the Ikebukuro shopping district of Tokyo, dozens of successful applicants to a sales lottery by electronics retailer Bic Camera lined up before the store opened to collect their devices. 9 New Yorkers lined up hours before the Nintendo Switch 2 release on June 4. REUTERS 'I feel like I'm going to cry,' Yumi Ohi, a 30 year-old delivery contractor, told Reuters. Ohi had missed out in other lotteries and had come from Saitama prefecture, adjacent to Tokyo, to receive her Switch 2. Nintendo has sold 152 million Switch home-portable devices since launching in 2017. It became a games juggernaut with titles including two 'The Legend of Zelda' titles and COVID-19 pandemic breakout hit 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons.' The Switch 2 bears many similarities with its predecessor but offers a larger screen and improved graphics and debuts with titles including 'Mario Kart World.' 9 Customers in a suburb of Miami set up lawn chairs outside of a Best Buy as they waited to buy the item. Getty Images 9 Andres Gomez celebrated as he entered a Best Buy store near Miami at midnight to purchase the console. Getty Images 'The much larger audience of Switch users should translate to stronger adoption in the opening part of its lifecycle,' said Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst at Ampere Analysis. 'Nintendo is better prepared this time around' to deal with the high demand, he said. The launch of the $499.99 Switch 2 is a test of Nintendo's supply chain management during US President Donald Trump's trade war. 9 First customer Koji Takahashi showed off his number one ticket before purchasing the new Nintendo Switch 2 gaming console at an electronics retailer in Tokyo, Japan. FRANCK ROBICHON/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock 9 Customers browsed the aisles of a store in Tokyo as they shopped for Nintendo Switch 2 accessories. AFP via Getty Images Nintendo last month forecast sales of 15 million Switch 2 units during the current financial year, as well as 4.5 million Switch units. President Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo will strengthen production capacity to respond to strong demand and focus on sales promotion in an effort to exceed the forecast. 'Given it's a special occasion, I wanted to buy [the Switch 2] right away on its release date,' said Shinichi Sekiguchi, a hotel receptionist in his thirties. 9 Gamers packed stores in Tokyo to purchase their new gaming device. AP 9 Nintendo released the Switch 2 on June 5. AFP via Getty Images Nintendo said it received 2.2 million applications for its Switch 2 sales lottery on its My Nintendo Store in Japan. Pre-orders at Target sold out in less than two hours. 'You are looking at weeks or months until you can walk into a store and buy a Switch 2,' said Toto of Kantan Games. 9 Nintendo received 2.2 million applications for its Switch 2 sales lottery on its My Nintendo Store in Japan. REUTERS Investor expectations for the new device are similarly lofty. Nintendo's shares are trading near highs and have gained almost 30% this year. Concerns include whether momentum for the Switch 2 will be sustained after hardcore gamers have upgraded. 'The volume of first-party games on offer at launch isn't as strong as it could be, so some more casual users may wait and see how the games available build over the next one to two years before making the leap,' said Ampere's Harding-Rolls. 9 A happy Nintendo Switch 2 customer showed off his new game console in Tokyo, Japan. REUTERS Ampere forecasts Switch 2 sales to exceed 100 million units in 2030. 'Mario Kart World' has a US sticker price of $79.99, generating debate over the price of games. Nintendo is also attracting third-party titles to the system. 'I've been around since the era of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and games from (that period) were expensive too so I think it's somewhat within the acceptable range,' said Akitomo Takahashi, a salesman in his forties. Takahashi said he was keen to play action role-playing game 'Elden Ring' on his Switch 2.

The best revelations from the ‘Billy Joel: And So It Goes' documentary premiere at Tribeca Film Festival

It was a Billy Joel state of mind at the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival. The world premiere of the Piano Man's documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' kicked off the 24th edition of the festival at the Beacon Theatre on Wednesday night. Although the 76-year-old music legend was absent from his big night after revealing his shocking brain disorder diagnosis two weeks ago, Joel's presence was still very much felt as the audience watched the first half of the two-part doc that will premiere on HBO and HBO Max later this summer. 9 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' will premiere on HBO and HBO Max later this summer. Getty Images for Tribeca Festival 9 Tribeca Festival co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal introduced 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes.' Getty Images for Tribeca Festival Here, we break down some of the biggest revelations of Part 1: He wanted to be a heavy-metal rocker While we always think of Joel as the ultimate piano balladeer, he actually wanted to get his Led Zeppelin on with an early band. The young Piano Man broke away from his early band The Hassles with Jon Small to form the heavy-metal duo Attila (as in Attila the Hun) in 1969 that set out to 'destroy the world with amplification.' 'I didn't know one person that liked what we were doing,' says Joel, who can be seen as the hair apparent to Robert Plant in the doc. 'But I did.' Joel broke his bandmate's heart by stealing his best friend's wife 9 Billy Joel married Elizabeth Weber in 1973, and she went on to become his manager. Getty Images for Tribeca Festival The Piano Man fell in love with Elizabeth Weber, who was Small's wife at the time. 'I was just in love with a woman,' he says. 'And I got punched in the nose, which I deserved.' But Small took the high road after Weber inspired Joel's 1971 debut, 'Cold Spring Harbor.' 'You could tell from the lyrics that he was really in love with Elizabeth,' Small says of songs such as 'She's Got a Way.' He attempted suicide after falling into depression over the affair 9 Elizabeth Weber and son Sean Weber-Small attended the Tribeca Festival premiere of 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes.' Getty Images for Tribeca Festival 'I was just in a lot of pain .. so I just thought I'd end it all,' he says of trying to take his own life by overdosing on sleeping pills. But after surviving the attempt, he cracked 'You can't even do yourself in,' while revealing the compassion he was shown by his betrayed best friend through the ordeal: 'Jon saved my life.' Joel was performing as Billy Martin when he was inspired to write 'Piano Man' 9 Billy Joel was unable to attend the Tribeca Festival premiere of his new doc because of his brain disorder diagnosis. Getty Images for Tribeca Festival After he moved cross-country to Los Angeles with Weber to make more music, Joel became the resident lounge lizard at the Executive Room in LA. But he didn't want to perform under his recording moniker, so the artist born William Martin Joel performed as 'Bill Martin at the keyboards' after his first and middle names. 'This was a real-life experience,' he says. 'And I thought, 'I gotta get a song outta this!' … And that's where the 'Piano Man' song came from.' The Plano Man didn't like being compared to the Rocket Man 9 Billy Joel resisted attempts to make him work with Elton John's band in the '70s. Getty Images When it was suggested that Joel use Elton John's band, he thought that it was 'a terrible idea.' 'Why would I wanna work with another well-known piano player's band?' he says. 'The lack of imagination was staggering. And I was already having critical issue with them comparing me to Elton.' Beatles producer be damned, he stayed loyal to his band 9 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' directors Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin attended the Tribeca Festival premiere of their doc. Getty Images After Joel said goodbye to Hollywood and returned to New York with his now wife and soon-to-be manager Weber, he sought out famed Beatles producer George Martin to work on what would be 1977's 'The Stranger.' Martin agreed, but he wanted Joel to use studio musicians instead of the New York crew he had formed on 1976's 'Turnstiles' — a dealbreaker for him. 'And I passed on working with George Martin,' he says. 'Love me, love my band.' Joel thought 'Just the Way You Are' was 'too mushy' 9 Billy Joel's first wife Elizabeth Weber was the inspiration behind his first Top 10 hit, 'Just the Way You Are.' Getty Images 'Just the Way You Are' — the second single from 'The Stranger,' which would become a US Top 10 hit — was inspired by his wife and then manager Weber. 'It just didn't feel right, it was too mushy,' says Joel. But after being pushed to be a single by Weber — not to mention Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow — his breakthrough ballad won Grammys for Record and Song of the Year and took Joel to a whole new level of stardom. He was an arena headliner now. He faced backlash from Catholics for 'Only the Good Die Young' The 'Only the Good Die Young' lyric, 'You Catholic girls start much too late,' drew the ire of the church. 'It ended up being banned by the Catholic church,' he says. 'And then, as soon as they banned the sale of it, kids went out in droves [to buy it].' 9 Billy Joel wrote 'You May Be Right' after his ex-wife confronted him about riding his motorcyle while drunk. Getty Images Joel's drinking problem led to 'You May Be Right' — and the end of his marriage As Joel's drinking problem worsened, he took to riding his motorcycle while intoxicated. And when he drunkenly rode his bike to Weber one night, it inspired his 1980 hit 'You May Be Right' with the lyrics 'You may be right/I may be crazy/But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for.' But after Joel had an accident while riding his Harley-Davidson in 1978, it crashed their marriage. 'I was amazed that I was still alive,' he says. 'I should've died in that accident.'

A-Ha singer Morten Harket may not sing again after Parkinson's diagnosis

A-ha singer Morten Harket has revealed he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and may not be able to sing again. The 'Take on Me' superstar shared in an interview on the Norwegian synth pop band's website that treatment for symptoms of the condition have affected his voice and 'creative future.' The 65-year-old singer said he has been undergoing deep brain stimulation treatment for the past year after two procedures to implant electrodes into the left and then right side of his brain. 4 Morten Harket in the music video for the A-Ha song 'Take On Me.' The electrical impulses fired into his brain have reduced the impact of some of the disease's physical symptoms but have affected his soaring vocal power and ability to sing. 'I don't feel like singing, and for me that's a sign,' he told the band's biographer Jan Omdahl. 'I'm broadminded in terms of what I think works; I don't expect to be able to achieve full technical control. 'The question is whether I can express myself with my voice. As things stand now, that's out of the question. 'But I don't know whether I'll be able to manage it at some point in the future.' 4 Harket from A-ha performs on stage at the Bergenfest festival on June 15, 2022 in Bergen, Norway. Redferns Harket said he had kept the diagnosis private until now so he could focus on the 'delicate balancing act' of managing his symptoms with medication and advanced neurological treatment. He said he had 'no problems accepting the diagnosis' and took his 94-year-old father's advice to 'use whatever works' as he navigates living with the degenerative disorder. 'Part of me wanted to reveal it. Like I said, acknowledging the diagnosis wasn't a problem for me; it's my need for peace and quiet to work that has been stopping me,' Harket said. 'I'm trying the best I can to prevent my entire system from going into decline. It's a difficult balancing act between taking the medication and managing its side effects. 4 A-ha perform at Idyll Festival at Isegran on June 17, 2022 in Fredrikstad, Norway. Harket and bandmates Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy last toured Australia in 2020 and performed what may be their final concert at the Hollywood Bowl in July 2022. The musician said he had been working on new songs in recent years but was unsure 'if I'll be able to finish them for release.' But the philosophical singer told fans not to worry about him. 'Don't worry about me. Find out who you want to be – a process that can be new each and every day. Be good servants of nature, the very basis of our existence, and care for the environment while it is still possible to do so,' he said. 'Spend your energy and effort addressing real problems, and know that I am being taken care of.'
