Peter Jackson Invests Millions to 'De-Extinct' This Species

Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is temporarily pivoting from filmmaking, pouring millions of dollars into a project which hopes to bring an ancient species back from extinction.
The Associated Press reported earlier this week that Jackson and his partner, Fran Walsh, have invested $15 million in a joint effort with bioscience company Colossal and the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre in New Zealand to bring the South Island giant moa back from extinction. The moa, known as moa nunui by the Māori, was the tallest species of bird on record to ever have walked on Earth and was one of the tallest, surpassed only by the Malagasy elephant bird. They existed for about 4,000 years and went extinct roughly 600 years ago.
Jackson, an avid collector of moa bones, got in touch with Colossal after hearing about the company's efforts to 'de-extinct' the dire wolf and the woolly mammoth. 'The movies are my day job, and the moa are my fun thing I do,' he said. 'Every New Zealand schoolchild has a fascination with the moa.'Although scientists say it is 'unlikely' that the moa could be completely brought back from extinction, it's possible that its traits could be infused into other bird species. 'There's lots of different scientific hurdles that need to be overcome with any species that we pick as a candidate for de-extinction,' explained Beth Shapiro, Colossal's chief scientist. 'We are in the very early stages.'
For his part, Jackson seems to be all in. Although the director specified he's 'certainly not retired' from filmmaking during a recent interview with Screen Rant, he finds the moa consuming more of his imagination these days. 'To me, de-extincting the Moa would be just as exciting, if not more exciting, than any film I could possibly make,' Jackson admitted. 'I've made a lot of movies, but to see the giant moa brought back would be a level of excitement that I think would supersede anything at this point in time.'

New Zealand Air Force Mounts Dangerous Rescue Mission in Antarctica

The Royal New Zealand Air Force evacuated three people from a U.S. research base in Antarctica on Wednesday, conducting a rare and highly dangerous mission through volatile weather and 24-hour darkness to rescue the individuals. The evacuation at McMurdo Station, the United States' main outpost in Antarctica, was requested by the National Science Foundation after a staff member required urgent medical care and was unable to be treated there, the air force said in a statement. Two other people who needed medical care were also taken on the flight. The station, which typically hosts around 200 people during the winter months, has a small medical staff on site, similar to an urgent care facility, the National Science Foundation said in a statement. The foundation is not equipped, however, to handle major emergencies. It did not provide details about the medical conditions that led to the evacuations. On Tuesday afternoon, the air force sent a C-130J Hercules, a military transport aircraft, from Christchurch, New Zealand, to Antarctica. The crew, equipped with night vision goggles, flew about 2,400 miles, roughly the distance from Los Angeles to New York City, in difficult weather conditions and complete darkness, Andy Scott, an air commodore, said in the statement. Mr. Scott said that evacuating people from Antarctica during the winter months is one of the most challenging missions the air force can undertake. Temperatures can drop to minus 90 degrees Fahrenheit (roughly minus 70 Celsius) in some locations, and violent storms can appear in a matter of minutes. The journey is made even riskier because there is a point of no return, after which there are no airfields where the crew can divert the aircraft if something goes wrong, Mr. Scott said. The plane also needs to land in Antarctica on a runway made of ice, he added. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Who's America's Favorite Couple? A Baltimore pair is in the running.

Couples all over the country, including a Baltimore pair, are vying for the title of "America's Favorite Couple." It's an online contest where the winning couple not only wins $20,000, but also will be featured in an in-print advertorial in Variety magazine. Devon Ojeda and Caius Willingham said their entry in the competition is about showing what being American truly is. Ojeda and Willingham first met as coworkers, but as they got to know each other better, they realized their working relationship should be something more. Ojeda described it as love at first sight. "We tried to deny it for a long time because we were colleagues, but it got to a point that you can't ignore the feelings," Willingham said. What got them to start thinking about dating, though, is when the two matched on eHarmony. "That was enough for Caius to break the ice," Ojeda said. After dating for a few years, the two eloped in New York City in May. Ever since then, Ojeda's been wanting to make their love known. "I just wanted to scream it out in the mountains, saying I have the best marriage ever. I had the most perfect day," Ojeda said. So, when Ojeda saw an ad for "America's Favorite Couple" contest, he applied, and the couple was accepted. The contest is put on by the fundraising platform Colossal. The contest is currently in its group finals stage, with three more rounds to go. At this point, Ojeda and Willingham have already made it through several rounds of voting. "We're hoping it influences people to create more joy for themselves. Right now, it's really important to be in community with people," Ojeda said. Ojeda and Willingham are transgender. Ojeda is also a naturalized citizen. For them, being in this contest is about showing they do represent what being an American is -- especially in light of President Trump's target on the transgender community and heightened immigration enforcement. "The most radical thing, the most radical act you can do right now is to be bold and be loud with your love," Ojeda said. But, most importantly, they want to show how love comes in every identity. "It's not just like a man and woman. A marriage can be anybody, and that's the American dream," Ojeda said. "We want a world where it doesn't matter who you are, love is still love." The latest round of voting ends Thursday at 10 p.m. You can vote for Ojeda and Willingham here. You can vote once for free every 24 hours, but you can also add more votes if you donate.
