North Oman Gas & Condensate Discovery under test production: Oxy
MUSCAT: A major hydrocarbon discovery announced recently by US energy major Occidental (Oxy) in one of its concessions in north Oman is undergoing production testing, alongside an evaluation of its appraisal and development plans. The announcement came in published material issued during the Q2 2025 Conference Call hosted by senior Oxy executives over the weekend. Oxy Oman, a wholly owned subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, is one of the largest independent investors in the Sultanate's upstream sector, with interests in eight blocks: 9, 27, 62, 30, 65, 51, 72, and 53. Dubbed the 'North Oman Gas & Condensate Discovery,' the resource is estimated to hold around 250 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe). The reservoir is under test production, while appraisal and development plans are being evaluated, said Oxy. Its proximity to existing infrastructure, including a gas plant with available capacity, is considered a key advantage. However, dominating the Oman segment of the conference call were developments related to Oxy Oman's flagship asset – the heavy-oil-producing Mukhaizna field in Block 53. An extension agreement signed recently by Oman's Ministry of Energy and Minerals with Oxy and other Block 53 shareholders is 'expected to deliver significant value while supporting Oman's key national objectives,' the US energy firm said. Furthermore, there is potential to grow resources by over 800 million gross barrels from the field, with competitive project returns, it noted. Under the extension of the Block 53 Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement (EPSA), signed in May, Occidental Mukhaizna and its partners have committed to investing an estimated RO 11.5 billion (approximately USD 30 billion) through to 2050. These investments will cover capital and operational expenditures aimed at enhancing production efficiency and deploying advanced extraction technologies to optimize resource recovery within the block. To date, Oxy Oman has produced over 640 million barrels from Block 53 through the operation of 3,500 wells. In remarks during the conference call, Vicki Hollub, President and Chief Executive Officer of Oxy, commented: 'That was an incredible agreement that we made with Oman because it benefits both Oxy and Oman, and it allows us the flexibility and possibility to invest there because now the economics will be comparable.' Kenneth Dillion, Senior Vice President and President, International Oil and Gas Operations, also highlighted the presence of multiple stacked pays—distinct hydrocarbon-bearing layers (pay zones) stacked vertically within the same geological structure—in the block. 'With all the work we've done there, what we see is multiple stacked pays across a very large block. And in the North, we've been producing the layup wells for some time now, which are totally different and don't need any steam. So we see the extension as a win-win for Oxy and the government, and sustainable.' Net hydrocarbon production from Oxy Oman's portfolio climbed to an average of 76,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) during the second quarter of 2025, up from 64,000 boepd in the corresponding period of 2024. 2025 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. NSA and EDGE launch Space Mission and Satellite Engineering Programme
Participants will benefit from hands-on training, access to national space projects and exclusive networking opportunities with industry leaders. The National Space Academy, a UAE Space Agency initiative dedicated to developing a skilled and future-ready national workforce, has launched the Space Mission and Satellite Engineering Programme (SMSE) in partnership with EDGE. Delivered in collaboration with EDGE entities FADA and BEACON RED, the SMSE programme aims to build the UAEs next generation of satellite engineers, system architects, and mission leaders through hands-on space mission systems training. The programme equips Emirati professionals, researchers, and graduates with specialised expertise in satellite mission design, space systems engineering, and mission operations, positioning them to support and accelerate the development of the UAEs space capabilities. H.E. Eng. Salem Butti Salem Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, commented: 'Preparing local talents is a fundamental pillar of the UAE Space Agency's strategy to ensure the sustainability of the space sector. We are committed to qualifying and training young local cadres and honing their skills according to the highest international standards to efficiently lead future space initiatives and missions, while strengthening the UAE's position as a global driver of innovation and scientific and technological advancement.' Al Qubaisi continued: 'Through the National Space Academy, one of our transformational projects, and the courses it offers, we seek to develop an integrated educational and training system that combines theoretical and practical aspects and meets the needs of the labour market. This is a significant step to support the UAEs ability to keep pace with the requirements of the next phase.' Waleid Al Mesmari, President Space & Cyber Technologies, EDGE Group, stated: 'The UAEs success in space will ultimately be defined by our ability to nurture a new generation of technically adept Emiratis equipped to lead complex space missions. 'Through this programme, we are not only delivering world-class knowledge and hands-on experience but also reinforcing EDGEs commitment to supporting the UAEs space sector through capability development at every level. 'Together with the UAE Space Agency, we are building a robust foundation that integrates education, industry expertise and strategic foresight to empower Emirati professionals to shape and lead the future of our space endeavours.' The ten-week programme, taking place from 16 September to 20 November 2025 at the UAE Space Agencys headquarters in Abu Dhabi, BEACON REDs advanced training centre, and FADAs facilities, combines in-person technical training with online modules led by a distinguished roster of local and international industry experts. Participants will gain practical experience across five core modules, including Designing Space Missions (DSM), Applied Space Systems Engineering (ASSE), Space System Verification and Validation (SSVV), Space Mission Operations (SMO), and a Central Case Project (CCP) simulating the end-to-end planning, design, and justification of a real satellite mission. The curriculum is designed to deliver in-depth technical training through hands-on laboratory work and project applications using industry-standard tools and software, while fostering a strategic understanding of operational planning through site visits to leading UAE aerospace and technology organisations. Open exclusively to UAE nationals, the programme targets professionals working in government or private sector organisations within the space industry, as well as academic researchers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. It also welcomes applications from graduates holding a bachelors degree or higher qualifications.
