Shubman Gill, Sophie Dunkley named ICC Players of the Month for July

Dubai: India Test captain Shubman Gill and England spinner Sophia Dunkley have been named the ICC men's and women's Player of the Month for July, respectively.
Gill has landed the Player of the Month award after a stiff competition from England Test skipper Ben Stokes and South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. This is his fourth Player of the Month honour, having won previously in February this year and in January and September 2023.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a remarkable month in July, piling up 567 runs at an outstanding average of 94.50 across three Tests, smashing a double hundred and two hundreds in six outings.
It was Gill's first tour as India's Test captain, and he said it was a nice honour to be recognised.
"It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July. This time it holds a lot more significance since it has come for my performances during my first Test series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham is obviously something I will cherish forever and will be one of the highlights of my tour to England.
"The Test series against England was a learning experience for me as captain and we had some outstanding performances from both sides, which I am sure players from both sides will remember for a long time. I would like to thank the jury for selecting me for this award and my teammates who have been with me during the course of this exciting series. I look forward to continuing my form in the season ahead and bring more laurels for the country," Gill said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Sophia Dunkley's consistent run with the bat has seen her clinch the ICC Women's Player of the Month honour for the first time. She edged out strong competition from England teammate Sophie Ecclestone and Ireland captain Gaby Lewis for the monthly award.
The 27-year-old had a quiet start to the month in the second T20I against India in Bristol. However, she bounced back in style in the next match, showcasing her class with a commanding 75 off 53 balls - a knock that proved vital in England's narrow six-run victory.
Across the four T20Is, Dunkley amassed 144 runs at an average of 36, striking at an impressive 134.57. Her form carried into the ODIs, where she scored 126 runs at an average of 63 and a strike rate of 91.97 - capping off a solid all-round month with the bat for the in-form England batter.
Speaking on winning the award, Dunkley said, "I am delighted to win the ICC Player of the Month award off the back of a really hard-fought series against India.
'We would have loved to have won the series but I think we'll take a lot from it moving towards the ICC Women's World Cup. India deserved their win and it was a great series to be a part of."

Shubman Gill Shatters Babar Azam's World Record – But That's Not His Biggest Feat Yet

Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has etched his name in cricket history by becoming the first player ever to win the ICC Player of the Month award four times, breaking Babar Azam's world record. Gill's extraordinary run-scoring spree in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy not only powered India in a thrilling series against England but also set new benchmarks in Test cricket. Record-Breaking July: 567 Runs, Three Centuries, and a Feat for the Ages The month of July 2025 will be remembered as one of the most dominant performances in modern cricket. In his first assignment as India's full-time Test captain, the 25-year-old Gill amassed 754 runs at an average of 75.9, with four centuries in the series. Remarkably, 567 of those runs, including three tons, came in July alone. The standout moment arrived at Edgbaston, where Gill produced a breathtaking 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second. His 430-run aggregate in the match is now the second-highest in Test history and the highest ever by a player in an away Test. Shubman Gill Surpasses Babar Azam's ICC Record Before Gill's heroics, Babar Azam held the record for the most ICC Player of the Month awards by a male cricketer, with three wins. Gill's latest triumph—adding to his wins in January 2023, September 2023, and February 2025—makes him the first male player to claim the honour four times. Gill has also become the first player to win the award multiple times in a single year, achieving the feat in 2023 and 2025. The only others to manage two wins in a year are Jasprit Bumrah and Kamindu Mendis. Asia Cup 2025: Gill in Contention for T20I Vice-Captaincy Gill's sensational Test form has put him back in the frame for India's T20I squad ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled in the UAE from September 9. According to PTI, the selectors are weighing Gill's claim for the vice-captaincy alongside Axar Patel. With Suryakumar Yadav leading the T20 side and Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya forming a solid top order, finding a slot for Gill may be challenging. However, his current form, IPL performance, and leadership credentials make him a strong contender. Selection Dilemmas: Wicketkeepers, All-Rounders, and Pace Options The BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, faces tough decisions ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement on August 19 or 20. Wicketkeeping Role: Samson is almost certain to be the first-choice keeper, with Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel fighting for the second spot. All-Rounder Choices: Hardik Pandya remains the leading seam-bowling all-rounder, while Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are set to handle spin duties. Shivam Dube is likely to return, but Nitish Kumar Reddy may miss out due to injury. Pace Attack: Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh will lead the bowling, with Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna competing for the third seamer's role. A Defining Moment for Indian Cricket Gill's latest milestone is more than just a personal achievement—it's a statement about the next era of Indian cricket. As the national team transitions from legends of the past to a new leadership core, Gill's consistency, hunger, and adaptability have made him the face of this transformation. Breaking Babar Azam's record not only cements his position among the world's elite batters but also signals India's growing dominance across formats. With the Asia Cup 2025 and World Test Championship cycles ahead, Gill's form could be the difference between good and great for Team India. Do IPL teams flout player-signing norms post auction? R Ashwin's explosive Dewald Brevis-CSK deal sparks speculations

The upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) might be six months away but the cash-rich franchise T20 is making headlines after former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed that Chennai Super Kings have made an under-the-table deal to sign South African Dewald Brevis midway into the previous season. The whole Brevis-CSK saga came up after the South African slammed his maiden T20I hundred against Australia recently a couple of days back. Following the hundred, former South African captain AB de Villiers claimed Brevis to be CSK's biggest 'masterstroke' while nine other IPL teams missed a 'golden opportunity.' Brevis was signed by CSK in place of injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh for an amount of ₹ 2.2 crore after the 22-year-old went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction despite a base price of ₹ 75 lakhs. In the video, Ashwin revealed a lot of teams wanted to sign Brevis as a replacement. But CSK won the right-hander, known as 'Baby AB', after intense negotiations with his agents. The 38-year-old explained that players like Brevis holds the negotiation power as they know that they will get more than their base price at the auction next year if performed well. 'About Brevis. He had a great time last IPL with CSK. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. A few teams left him because of the price. When he was supposed to be signed as a replacement, he was supposed to be signed at the base price,' Ashwin said. 'But what happens is you talk to the agents and the player will say, if you give me X amount extra, I will come. That happens because the player knows if he is released next season, he will go for good money. So his concept was that, you pay me good money now else I will go for more next year,' added Ashwin, who was bought by CSK in IPL 2025 mega auction last year for almost ₹ 10 crore. "And CSK were ready to pay him, hence he came. In the back half, the CSK combination was strong. They will go with ₹ 30 crore in IPL 2026 mini auction," he added. Ashwin remarks have sparked speculations about IPL teams' under-the-table formula while trying to sign big names post auction as injury replacements. Payments outside the contract is considered as a breach of conduct and could lead to penalties to both parties - player and the franchise. In IPL 2025, Brevis scored 225 runs in six matches for CSK, thus adding stability in the middle order and also smashed two fifties. During the season, Brevis hit 17 sixes, the second-most by a CSK batter that in 2025. Before coming to CSK, Brevis had played 10 matches for Mumbai Indians.

Shubman Gill As India's Future T20 Captain? 3 Reasons Why It Can Backfire

Last Updated: Shubman Gill is ridiculously talented, in form, and has proven that he can lead India -- but is that good enough to give him T20 vice-captaincy? Format-mixing has become a common concept in Indian men's team selections. Whenever a player is in great form, selectors tend to pick him for the next international rubber, irrespective of where the form was on display. For example, Suryakumar Yadav's Test and ODI debuts came after his excellent returns in the IPL and T20Is, but he couldn't succeed in the former two. The concept of all-format superstars always seems more prevalent in India than in other countries. There's a sense of privilege in representing the team in all formats, and those who manage to do it together without affecting their performances, like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, get into immediate 'GOAT' debates. Shubman Gill is just the next in line. Fresh from success in England, both with the bat and his captaincy, there's talk of him getting into India's T20I team. Curiously, it's not about whether he deserves to be in the Asia Cup squad in September or not, but whether he could be the vice-captain to cement his path as the heir of Suryakumar, who's the undroppable incumbent but 34 years old. There's merit to the theory as Gill's coming off an excellent year in the IPL, too, but there are several concerns associated that can make the move backfire, as well. It's the age-old dilemma: should you pick the best captain first and build a team around it, or should you pick the best 11 and choose a captain from that? Gill might have the credentials as the best primed (age-wise) and perhaps even the most tactically sound leader (it's subjective), but as a player, his case is wobbly. India have Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson in Gill's preferred opening spot. Sharma is the ICC's top-ranked T20I batter with good reason, while Sanju is not too behind and is coming off three centuries in the format not too long ago. Gill hasn't played any T20Is since 2024. Alongside Gill, Sharma and Samson have been among the best openers in the IPL for a while, but have done that with a more high-risk, high-intent way of batting. That's increasingly the way to go in the format. Though Gill pushed his strike-rate beyond 150 in IPL 2025 and was one of the best run-accumulators to watch in action, he didn't do anything to push past the settled duo of Sharma and Samson. Stability is cited as one of the reasons why single all-format captaincy work, and with just a few months to go to the 2026 T20 World Cup, putting Gill as an opener could bring serious stability problems. Even at number three, India have a settled choice in Tilak Varma, who has done nothing wrong to be replaced months before a major ICC tournament. As far as replacements go, Yashasvi Jaiswal has had better and more consistent performances than Gill over the past several seasons of the IPL, and if an injury reserve is picked, he'd deserve to be higher than the Test skipper in the pecking order. If Gill is still brought into the team to ease him in as the vice-captain and hope he'll be ready to take over from Suryakumar when needed, then it'll likely cause some friction within the team. In the Test team, he was a clear choice: Jasprit Bumrah had workload concerns, KL Rahul didn't have too many years to give, Jaiswal was raw, Rishabh Pant hadn't proved himself as captain at any level, and the team was young enough to absorb a new personality of leadership. None of these conditions is met in T20s. Bumrah, Hardik Pandya (31), Samson (30), and even the current vice-captain, Axar Patel (31), are in their prime and have good cases to be Suryakumar's deputy. If any of them have the ambition to lead India, too, they can't be faulted for being upset seeing someone not in the team for a year appointed the deputy ahead of them. If Suryakumar can lead for the next two years and one of Axar, Samson, and Pandya can do three more after that, succession is a problem for 2030. Thinking about the future is important, but not at the cost of the present. There's perhaps no place where split captaincy faced as much antagonism as India. Here, arguably because of how all the best captains have been strong personalities, it's hard to fathom a sharing of responsibilities. But there's no actual proof that one-man captaincy is better than a split. MS Dhoni was successful in that role, but Virat Kohli didn't win any ICC trophies as a captain. Rohit Sharma won both the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, but under him, India got whitewashed in Tests at home for the first time, and he was not leading his IPL teams at the same time, unlike Kohli and, likely in the future, Gill. Even coaches like Rahul Dravid, who were overseeing all formats, and now Gautam Gambhir need breaks when they don't even go out in the field, just because of how packed cricket's calendar is for India. With an ICC tournament slated for every year, it will be bound to be exhausting for anyone with that much responsibility and affect their batting. What worked in Tests might not work in T20Is. If you give them a rest, will the vice-captain be one for all formats, or will that be fine as a split? There's no right answer. All the concerns about split captaincy are communication-based: what if the ODI and T20I captains want the same player, and they can only play one series? Selectors and coaches step in to decide what's best for the country. A humongous risk with burdening a stunningly talented 25-year-old with the nation's responsibility is not that he won't do his best to fulfill it, but that he will, and it won't be enough.
