Karan Johar's grand historical drama Takht may have been shelved for now, but it's certainly not forgotten. Originally announced in 2020 with a star-studded ensemble including Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, and Anil Kapoor, the film was slated for a Christmas 2021 release. However, it quietly disappeared from Dharma Productions' lineup—until now.
In a recent chat with Galatta Plus, Karan Johar finally broke his silence on what went wrong. Without delving into the details, the filmmaker acknowledged that 'multiple factors" kept the ambitious project from taking off. But is Takht off the table for good? Absolutely not. 'It's a film on my table, and I will make it one day," Karan asserted, reigniting fan hopes.
What's more, he described the screenplay by Sumit Roy as one of the finest he's ever read. 'I think it's my best screenplay to date," Karan said, calling the story rich and complex. Set against the backdrop of Mughal politics, Takht would explore the intense power struggle between brothers Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb.
Originally announced with a teaser featuring a regal throne, Takht had all the makings of a magnum opus. Its sudden halt left fans puzzled, especially given the star power and grandeur associated with the project.
Now, with Karan confirming that the film is merely paused and not cancelled, hope has been rekindled among Bollywood enthusiasts. Whether it's the scale, cast, or the compelling historical drama at its heart, Takht remains one of the most anticipated Dharma projects yet to materialize.
In the meantime, Karan is focused on directing an action film next, following the success of his 2023 romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. As a producer, his slate includes Dhadak 2, Naagzilla, and Tu Meri Main Tera. But for fans of epic sagas, Takht may still reign someday—just not yet.

'Services are closely mapping which titles are working, whom they star and then taking decisions. The dichotomy, the person added, is that even top actors are no longer guaranteeing box office performance, and there's a growing disenchantment with celebrity culture in India—across both cinema and digital content. However, platforms have been slow to adapt to that shift. To be sure, while platforms once chased big-ticket originals with top Bollywood names, many of those high-profile deals have stalled or quietly faded. In their place, services are leaning more heavily on a smaller crop of OTT-native stars—who offer strong audience pull at relatively lower cost. Some of these streaming stars have also moved to theatrical films so they are in a more commanding position. He added that while platforms are balancing this out with fewer big-ticket shows in general, it would be some time before they let go of the dependence on stars.
