The Earliest Military Land Rover Series I Still Survives

ArabGT17-06-2025
While the Land Rover Series I made its debut after World War II, its identity as a rugged, no-nonsense off-roader with military roots was quickly established—much like the Jeep CJ it is so often compared to. These compact, robust machines earned a place in the military almost immediately after production began in 1948. One rare example stands out above the rest: chassis R-860756, believed to be the oldest surviving military Land Rover Series I in existence. Now, this historic vehicle is heading to auction with RM Sotheby's, offering collectors a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a true British legend.
A Battle-Tested Legacy Preserved in Bronze Green
Rolling out of the Solihull factory on December 16, 1948, this Series I was one of just 20 vehicles in the very first batch delivered to the British Ministry of Supply. It carried the War Department registration 'M6278786' before receiving its service number '90 YJ 00' in 1949. Unlike many of its contemporaries that were lost during active duty, this Land Rover endured—and its survival makes it a pivotal piece of Land Rover's military heritage.
This Land Rover Series I remained in military service until 1961 and was officially retired the following year, sent to the War Department Storage Depot at Ruddington before being auctioned off. Civilian life began for the Series I with registration '2350 PK,' and it passed through only two owners before arriving in the hands of its current custodian in 1985.
Restored With Respect, Built for History
Though the original 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine was replaced during military service with a reconditioned 1949 unit—a standard practice for vehicles of this era—the engine block still wears its Ministry of Supply brass 'overhaul' plate. Beyond that, its drivetrain remains authentic, featuring a full-time, two-speed four-wheel-drive system and the rare 'ring pull' gearbox still intact.
Photographic documentation from an early restoration effort revealed a chassis so well-preserved it had reportedly never required welded repairs. A comprehensive, historically faithful restoration followed in 2014–2015 under the supervision of a Dunsfold Land Rover expert. The body was returned to its correct Bronze Green, complemented by a silver chassis and black axles—factory-spec finishes throughout. It still rides on period-correct Avon Traction Mileage tyres wrapped around split-rim military wheels, and even includes semaphore turn signals and a complete toolkit.
Interestingly, hints of red paint once flanking the body suggest it may have been used in bomb disposal or as a munitions carrier—a detail that adds further intrigue to its military backstory.
Own a Defender's Grandfather—for the Price of One
Despite its rarity and historical significance, RM Sotheby's has placed a surprisingly accessible estimate on this landmark vehicle: £50,000 to £75,000, or roughly $68,000 to $102,000. That positions it squarely within the price range of a new Land Rover Defender—modern, yes, but lacking the gravitas and originality of this Series I. With no reserve set, this iconic machine will sell to the highest bidder when it crosses the block at the Cliveden House auction on July 8.
For enthusiasts and collectors alike, this Land Rover Series I isn't just an opportunity to buy a car—it's a chance to own the beginning of a legend.

Cassidy seals round 15 win in London E-Prix as Porsche lead team and manufacturer standings ahead of season finale

LONDON: Nick Cassidy claimed victory in the London E-Prix on Saturday in Round 15 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. He delivered Jaguar TCS Racing a third consecutive win ahead of Sunday's season finale. The New Zealander, competing in his final weekend for Jaguar, crossed the line ahead of Mahindra Racing's Nyck de Vries and TAG Heuer Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein, after a dramatic mid-race battle that saw Cassidy time his overtakes and strategy to perfection. Cassidy, who started fifth on the grid, used a combination of strategic Attack Mode deployment and a perfectly timed Pit Boost to move past de Vries exiting the final turn on Lap 27, holding on for the remainder of the race despite the Dutchman's pressure. His win followed Jaguar's double triumph in Berlin and made the British outfit only the fifth team in Formula E history to notch up three straight victories. It was a particularly emotional result for Jaguar Team Principal James Barclay, who is stepping down after overseeing the team's resurgence on the global motorsport stage. Cassidy's second consecutive win ensured Barclay's final race weekend in charge came with silverware. Wehrlein secured third place and the fastest lap of the race, banking valuable points for Porsche in both the Teams' and FIA Manufacturers' World Championships. Season 8 champion Stoffel Vandoorne finished fourth for Maserati MSG Racing, while Britain's Jake Dennis took fifth and DS PENSKE's Jean-Eric Vergne rounded out the top six. The result elevated Cassidy to third in the Drivers' Championship standings, just behind newly-crowned champion Oliver Rowland – who could only manage 11th – and Wehrlein. In the Teams' standings, Porsche now lead Nissan Formula E Team by 39 points with only 47 left on the table, while the German manufacturer also leads Nissan in the Manufacturers' race by a margin of 367 to 338. Reflecting on the win, Cassidy said: 'It's unbelievable. To win here at home for Jaguar and our team in front of a lot of our friends, family and partners who are here today, is incredible. I wasn't the happiest guy this morning but that was for a reason, and I knew we had good potential in the car. In that race I was able to show that, which is pretty cool. To be honest it was a little bit fluid – a huge shout out to my strategy team, I was really scared about not coming out of the pits after Pit Boost in the lead of that second group, and it was tight but I was able to hang on there and that's what made the race. It meant that we could do the Attack Modes later which was really powerful.' Second-place finisher de Vries praised his team after a strong performance. 'We certainly are happy to be back and give the team a result they definitely deserve. In Jakarta we were on course for a great race but for various reasons we weren't able to bring home a podium. I'm very pleased to get it on the front row and execute a good race, so thank you very much to the entire team for giving me a great car today,' he said. Wehrlein, who retains an outside shot at the Teams' and Manufacturers' titles with one race remaining, added: 'I'm quite happy, I would have wanted more of course but more wasn't possible. That was what we had today and our goals are clear: we want to win the Teams' and Manufacturers' Championships so the points are very important for us. Nevertheless, I always want to win – every time I race – and today it was not possible. We take the positives and one more race to go tomorrow – I'm looking forward to that.' The season concludes on Sunday with Round 16 of the double-header finale in London.

Liverpool players to wear ‘Forever 20' patches in Diago Jota's memory

Liverpool players will wear a 'Forever 20' emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets this Premier League season in memory of their former forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain three weeks ago. The club also announced on Saturday a special commemoration including a fan mosaic and a minute's silence ahead of Liverpool's opening game of the season against Bournemouth on August 15. Thousands of flowers, scarves, banners and other tributes have been laid outside Anfield since Jota and his brother André Silva died. The club said they have been removed over the past week and stored, while the floral tributes will be composted and used in flower beds across club sites, including Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and AXA Melwood Training Centre. The remaining artefacts will be recycled and used to create a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a focal point of remembrance at Anfield. Liverpool had already announced after consultation with Jota's family that his number 20 shirt will be retired across all levels of the club, including the women's and academy teams. Supporters can have 'Diogo J. 20' printed on shirts in club stores, with profits going to LFC Foundation, the club's official charity. The Foundation has committed to creating a grassroots football program in Jota's name. A floral tribute will also be laid before kickoff at pre-season games in Hong Kong, Tokyo and at Anfield.

FIA and Formula E agree 10-year extension to electric world championship

LONDON: The FIA and Formula E have agreed a 10-year extension to their partnership, securing the future of the FIA Formula E World Championship until at least 2038. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Announced on Friday, the new multi-year agreement between the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile and Formula E ensures the world's premier all-electric racing series will continue to operate under the FIA's governance for another decade beyond the current deal. The extension is a pivotal moment for Formula E, which has recorded 20 percent year-on-year growth since its inaugural race in 2014. The sport now attracts more than 400 million fans worldwide and reaches a global TV audience of about half a billion. Described by the FIA as a milestone for innovation and sustainability in motorsport, the renewed deal will allow Formula E to accelerate its expansion, pursue long-range partnerships and enhance its position as a testbed for electric vehicle technologies that translate to consumer markets. 'The extension of the agreement governing the FIA Formula E World Championship is a fantastic outcome for the sport and a clear reflection of our ongoing strategy at the FIA to foster long-term stability, innovation, and growth across all areas of motorsport,' said Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president at the FIA. 'This milestone reaffirms our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and technological progress, which are all central to the championship's unique identity and purpose. It also aligns with our broader goal of increasing global participation and driving more accessible motorsport for all. We are delighted to be continuing this journey with Formula E, and I look forward to seeing it grow even further, both on and off the track, in the years to come,' he added. Formula E's cutting-edge credentials were further bolstered by the recent launch of the GEN3 Evo race car, which accelerates from 0-60mph in just 1.82 seconds, about 30 percent quicker than a current Formula 1 car. It has a top speed of 200mph and regenerates nearly half the energy used in a race. Sustainability is a core pillar, with tyres containing 35 percent recycled materials and bodywork incorporating recycled carbon fibre and natural fibres. Craig Edmondson, chief commercial officer at the FIA, added: 'Formula E has not only demonstrated impressive growth since its inception, but has also led the way on sustainable innovation in our industry. This is a landmark agreement for the FIA and Formula E, and we are excited to be working with the championship in the years to come.' The deal also provides the long-term security required to invest further in vehicle performance, fan engagement, and technological advancement. Formula E is targeting faster top speeds, enhanced aerodynamics, better tyre performance, and closer racing. 'We've believed in Formula E since Day 1, and this extension reaffirms our confidence in where it's headed. This is the motorsport of the future, a championship that combines the very latest technology, close-combat racing, and a mission that really matters,' said Mike Fries, CEO of Liberty Global, Formula E's majority owner. 'With the FIA's continued backing, we can now take the next big steps — scaling the sport, growing its global fanbase, and continuing to push the boundaries of what electric racing can achieve. 'With this new agreement in place, Formula E is now positioned better than ever to define the future of motorsport — more innovative, more inclusive, more sustainable — and to inspire the next generation of fans, drivers, and partners around the world,' he added. Formula E's roster includes major automotive manufacturers such as Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Maserati, Stellantis, Mahindra and Lola-Yamaha, with 11 teams and 22 drivers competing in cities including Jeddah, Monaco, Tokyo, London, Miami, and Shanghai. Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, said: 'Formula E's growth since its inception has been nothing short of extraordinary, with hundreds of millions of fans and world-class teams and drivers deciding to choose highly competitive electric racing. 'This long-term extension of the partnership enables us to continue building the brand, investing in the product and delivering some of the most captivating racing that has made us famous. 'With this long-term extension, the opportunity that Formula E now has to impact world motorsport will be truly transformational,' Dodds added. Formula E has topped global rankings for environmental, social and governance performance in sport for the past three years and continues to reduce freight emissions while delivering positive legacies in its host cities through its Better Future Fund. With global EV sales forecast to exceed 40 percent of all vehicle sales by 2030 and battery production expected to triple, the series is positioning itself at the forefront of technological and cultural shifts in motorsport and mobility.
