Opposition MPs tear, throw 'SIR' posters in bin as symbolic rejection of exercise

SIR
' written on them and putting them in a 'disposal bin'.
They also staged a protest march in Parliament House complex, demanding the rollback as well as a discussion on the issue in both houses.

Ahead of the start of the day's proceedings, several MPs of the opposition, including those of the Congress, DMK,
Samajwadi Party
, TMC, RJD and Left parties, carried out a protest march with the banner 'SIR- Loktantra par Var'.
Then in front of the Makar Dwar steps, a bin was placed and one by one the opposition leaders, including Kharge and Gandhi, tore the poster with SIR written on it and put it in the bin as a symbolic rejection of the exercise.
The MPs also raised slogans like "
Save democracy
" and "Stop vote-bandi".

NEW DELHI: Amid relentless attacks by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over alleged voter data fudging, the Election Commission on Thursday said instead of creating false narrative by using "dirty phrases" like 'vote chori', proof should be given. In a statement, the EC said the law for "one person one vote" is already been in existence since the first elections in 1951-1952. "If anyone has any proof of any person actually voting twice in any election, it should be shared with ECI with a written affidavit rather than colouring all the electors of India as 'chor' without any proof," it said. The poll authority said that by trying to create a false narrative by using "dirty phrases" like "vote chori" for Indian electors, is not only a direct attack on the crores of Indian electors but also an assault on the integrity of lakhs of election staff. Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, last week cited data to allege that more than one lakh votes were 'stolen' in the Mahadevpura assembly constituency of Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha in the 2024 elections, resulting in the defeat of a Congress candidate. The Election Commission had directed Gandhi to give a written declaration on his claims.

Zero complaints by political parties despite Oppn criticism; 23,557 plaints by voters: ECI data
Despite facing sustained criticism from Opposition parties over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has reported that it has not received a single complaint from political parties regarding claims and objections to the draft electoral roll. However, voters submitted 23,557 claims and objections for inclusion or exclusion in the draft rolls. According to the ECI's daily bulletin on April 14 covering the period from August 1 (3 P.M.) to August 14 (9 A.M), political parties had appointed as many as 1,60,813 Booth Level Agents (BLAs). The list includes Rashtriya Janata Dal (47,506), Bharatiya Janata Party (53,338), Janata Dal (United) (36,550) and Indian National Congress (17,549) BLAs among others. None of the parties, especially the Opposition has submitted any claims and objections. However, individual electors submitted 23,557 claims and objections for inclusion or exclusion in the draft rolls, of which 741 have already been disposed after the mandatory verification period. Additionally, 87,966 applications were received from new voters aged 18 and above, including six submitted through BLAs. The ECI clarified that under existing rules, claims and objections are handled by the concerned Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) or Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) after a seven-day verification period. Importantly, no name can be deleted from the draft rolls published on August 1 without a formal 'speaking order' following due enquiry and providing the concerned individual an opportunity to be heard. The absence of formal complaints by political parties stands in sharp contrast to the repeated public allegations by Opposition parties accusing the poll panel of bias and procedural lapses in voter roll management. Data indicate that while parties are actively engaging in the claims and objections process, they are not formally contesting the integrity or fairness of the exercise before the ECI.

Stray Dog Matter Set for Fresh Hearing by Supreme Court Bench
The matter was taken up by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai on Wednesday from the two-judge bench which on Tuesday ordered pan-India culling of strays across the National Capital Region (NCR). National Capital Region (NCR) cities' streets, and ordered Supreme Court hearing of the matter on Thursday before a 3-judge Supreme Court bench led by Justice Vikram Nath. Order on removing all strays from Delhi, NCR withdrawn On August 11, a bench of Justice J B Pardiwala had ordered the Delhi government and civic bodies in NCR to resolve the stray dog issue India by capturing the dogs from Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, Gurgaon and its outskirts and shifting them to any shelter home or pound within a specified timeframe. Acting on the representations of two counsels - one of them on grounds that the order appeared to be in conflict with an earlier SC judgment by a different bench - Following the request of animal control laws activists, a bench led by CJI Gavai on Wednesday withdrew all existing pet control laws from Pardiwala's bench and sent the case for further hearing to the bench of Justices Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N V Anjaria. On May 9 last year, a bench of Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice Sanjay Karol passed a detailed order disposing of more than two dozen petitions by Kerala government, Animal Welfare Board, NGOs and animal rights activists who had raised objections over contradictory orders passed by different high courts in the state on the culling of stray dogs. On Wednesday morning, the CJI was told by a counsel that the August 11 order by the Supreme Court was also in conflict with a past Supreme Court order last year which had asked civic bodies to treat the strays with compassion and strictly in accordance with the ABC Rules, 2023. Justice Maheshwari and Justice Karol last year had made it clear that dogs cannot be culled on a large scale and directed that civic authorities must act only with the object and intent of the relevant provisions of the existing laws.
