More than £1 trillion worth of card transactions made in 2024, says UK Finance

The number of contactless card transactions made in 2024 increased by 3.4% annually, according to UK Finance data.
Some 18.9 billion contactless transactions were made in 2024 – a 3.4% increase compared with 2023.
The figure includes both UK-issued cards and overseas cards being used within the UK.
The average contactless transaction last year was for £15.86, according to UK Finance's data, which was slightly higher than an average of £15.59 in 2023.
UK-issued debit and credit cards were used to make 31.4 billion transactions in 2024, including domestically and overseas, up from 30.2 billion transactions in 2023.
At the end of 2024 there were 163.4 million UK debit and credit cards in issue, up from 159.7 million at the end of 2023.
The total value of transactions on these cards was just over £1 trillion during 2024, which was in line with 2023 levels.
Debit card spending totalled £797 billion – down 0.8% compared with 2023.
Credit card transactions amounted to £249 billion – up 5.3% compared with 2023. Credit card transactions include card purchases, cash withdrawals and balance transfers.
UK Finance said that in recent years, there has been a move towards people making more frequent card payments for lower values.
Factors behind this include people using debit cards in places where they may have previously used cash, and the growth in contactless payments.
Janine Randolph, head of data management at UK Finance, said: 'During 2024 we saw just over £1 trillion worth of transactions by UK cardholders.
'We are using our cards more frequently, particularly making use of contactless transactions, which is being driven by increased card acceptance and also mobile contactless payment.'
On Tuesday, Barclays said that a record 94.6% of eligible in-store card transactions were contactless last year.
Transactions were considered to be eligible if they were contactless card transactions or mobile payment up to the value of £100.
Barclays said the increasing prevalence of self-service screens at retail and hospitality venues shows the importance of a 'smooth experience'.

Few matters are so important that a government should risk its future to get its way. The bill to reform the welfare system is one such. Rebel Labour MPs are threatening to kill the bill in a vote next week. The government should do its utmost to stop that happening, even if it means turning the issue into a vote of confidence. Britain's economic future depends on welfare reform. Government debt is the size of the entire economy. With growth stagnant and the war in Ukraine forcing unexpected increases in the defence budget, getting a grip on public spending is essential. The most obvious candidate for cuts is welfare expenditure. Spending on sickness benefits has grown from less than £50 billion a year before the pandemic to £80 billion now. The government's bill would make it harder to access personal independence payments and would reduce the higher level of incapacity benefit. Even after those changes, the cost of sickness benefits is ­expected to reach £98 billion by 2030. Reasonable people might therefore conclude that the main problem with the government's plan is that it does not go far enough. However, 108 Labour MPs, including 10 select committee chairs, regard these modest economies as excessive. They have signed an amendment which would, in effect, sabotage the bill. Privately, a dozen members of the government have threatened to resign over the proposed cuts. Despite the government's large parliamentary majority, the revolt is big enough to defeat the proposed legislation. Rebels have been emboldened by the U-turn which the government performed earlier this month when it rowed back on an intended cut to pensioners' winter fuel payments. If the government caved on that, surely they can persuade it to back down on this? • Looming welfare rebellion is a battle Starmer can't afford to lose But the benefits bill is far more important than winter fuel, and not just in monetary terms. It represents the most serious attempt yet by ministers to rein in spending. If a bill as modest as this cannot get through parliament, there is no hope of getting the public finances under control. The bond market will be watching the bill's progress closely. Britain's reputation for financial management is already poor enough that the government pays 4.5 per cent on its debt, compared with Germany's 2.5 per cent and France's 3.3 per cent. Further evidence of fiscal irresponsibility could trigger another rise, which would push up interest costs further still. At £108 billion per year, the government already spends about twice as much on debt interest as it does on defence. Neither the government nor the country can ­afford to see the welfare reform bill fall. If Sir Keir Starmer performs another U-turn or loses the vote, his credibility, already weakened, will be ­destroyed. If borrowing rates rise further, Britain's finances will be further destabilised. • Welfare U-turns may jeopardise Rachel Reeves's fiscal rules An opposition that placed the country above political advantage would vote for the planned cuts. Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, has promised to back the bill, but only if the prime minister promises in the Commons to levy no new taxes in the autumn, and to cut the welfare budget rather than merely restrict its growth. Given this heavily-qualified offer, Sir Keir must use this week to bring his rebels to heel. To do so, he must rediscover the ruthlessness he demonstrated before the election when he purged Labour's candidates list of left-wingers, and when he suspended seven MPs for opposing his plan to keep the two-child benefit cap. He should make it clear that he is prepared to turn the vote on the benefits bill into one of confidence in his government. That is the nuclear option: if he lost, an election would be called. This bill is not just a tweak to the welfare system. The country's future is at stake. Sir Keir must make it clear to the rebels that for Labour, and for Britain, this is make or break.

More people than ever are struggling to live on their current income - while just a third say they are living comfortably, according to new research. Rising prices and sluggish pay increases have put many people's finances under strain in recent years. A record 26% now say making ends meet is difficult. Before the pandemic, it was 16%. 2:32 Two-thirds also say their incomes haven't kept up with inflation, according to the British Social Attitudes report. That's only marginally better than the 70% recorded during the height of the cost of living crisis in 2023. Frozen tax thresholds also appear to be hitting home, with 61% saying taxes on low earners are too high, while 44% believe middle income earners also pay too much. Those figures are up nine points and 13 points respectively since 2016. However, when it comes to the highest earners, 44% believe their taxes are too low. 2:01 The report also asked people about the welfare system - a timely insight with Labour MPs currently rebelling over plans to save £5bn from the budget. It found support for more spending on disability benefits is at a record low of 45%, down from 67% in 2017 - but only 11% think spending should be reduced. About 29% of those polled think it's "too easy" for people to get disability benefits - but the same percentage also feel it's "too difficult". Meanwhile, long waiting times appear to have played a part in the finding that a record 59% are now dissatisfied with the NHS. In 2019, it was just 25%. Only 21% said they were satisfied with the health service. 3:50 The report is based on a representative, random sample of more than 4,000 people in the UK and was produced by the National Centre for Social Research. It's the longest-running measure of public opinion in Britain, having started in 1983. Professor Sir John Curtice, senior research fellow, said: "The public are well aware of Britain's problems - not least those of a failing health service and an economy in which many are struggling to make ends meet. "Yet rather than turning their back on the state, for the most part, the public are still inclined to look to government to provide solutions." 1:05 Defence was also a key theme of the report - and researchers found about 40% of Britons support spending more money on weapons and troops. A fifth (20%) said they would like to see a reduction. It comes as the government revealed it was buying at least 12 stealth jets that can carry nuclear weapons, and as NATO countries, including the UK, promise to increase defence spending. The National Security Strategy also said the UK must prepare for the potential of a "wartime scenario" in the "UK homeland" for the first time in many years. Almost everyone surveyed (90%) considered Russia a serious threat to world peace, followed by Iran (78%), North Korea (77%), Israel (73%), and China (69%). The percentage supporting more defence spending remains relatively unchanged since 2016, before Russia invaded Ukraine. However, the share supporting an increase is significantly higher now than that in 2006 (28%) and in the 1990s (17%).

More people are buying electric cars and installing heat pumps than ever before, but those numbers need to increase even further, according to the government's climate independent Climate Change Committee said that the government needed to make sure that households benefit from the switch to cleaner technologies through lower bills."The government has made progress on a number of fronts, including on clean power, [but] they need to do more on making electricity cheap," Emma Pinchbeck, chief executive of the CCC, told BBC response Energy Secretary Ed Miliband thanked the committee for its advice and said it was committed to bringing down bills. By law, the UK must stop adding to the total amount of planet-warming greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by 2050. This is known as "net zero".Reaching net zero carbon dioxide emissions globally is widely seen as essential to limit further warming. Previous political consensus around the UK's target has broken down, however, with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch branding it "impossible" and Reform using the phrase "net stupid zero". But the committee argues it is achievable and could lead to long-term economic benefits.
