Laos eyes deal with United Arab Emirates to ease fuel shortage

Manothong Vongsay (right) meeting with Bader Abdullah Al Matrooshi in Vientiane. -- Ministry of Industry and Commerce VIENTIANE: The government is reaching out to the United Arab Emirates in a bid to secure more affordable fuel supplies and expand cooperation in trade, investment, and renewable energy. The proposal was made by Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Manothong Vongsay during a recent meeting in Vientiane with the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Laos, Bader Abdullah Al Matrooshi, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. As rising global fuel prices continue to place pressure on the Lao economy, Manothong asked the United Arab Emirates to consider providing fuel at a reduced price, to help ease the burden of domestic shortages and bring greater stability to the energy market. Laos currently imports fuel mainly from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. From January to June this year, the government spent more than US$557 million on diesel alone, according to figures from the Department of Foreign Trade published on the Ministry of Industry and Commerce's website. While the terms of a possible fuel partnership have not yet been disclosed, the two sides expressed interest in building a stronger foundation for long-term energy cooperation. Manothong also invited Emirati investors to explore business opportunities in Laos, saying that closer economic ties would benefit both countries. He encouraged more high-level visits from government and private sector representatives to enhance mutual understanding and open the door for further collaboration. Trade between Laos and the United Arab Emirates has grown steadily over recent years, with a combined value of more than US$96 million recorded from 2020-2024. During this period, Laos exported goods worth US$26 million to the United Arab Emirates, including chemicals, paper, tobacco, and clothing. In return, Laos imported products worth US$69 million, mostly comprising books and newspapers, plastic products, animal feed, crude oil, lubricants, engine oil and grease, mechanical equipment, and synthetic fibres. During the talks, the two delegations reaffirmed their commitment to renewable energy development and agreed to proceed with plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on renewable energy cooperation. The proposed agreement covers seven key areas, including the sharing of technical expertise, capacity building, development of new energy sources, and support for energy efficiency and conservation measures in Laos. The two delegations said they hoped the partnership would pave the way for a cleaner and more resilient energy future, while also strengthening diplomatic and economic ties. - Vientiane Times/ANN

StanChart: 87pct of wealthy investors eye transition investing

KUALA LUMPUR: Standard Chartered's new research shows rising momentum for transition investing, with 87 per cent of high-net-worth investors surveyed showing strong interest in the growing asset class. In a statement today, the bank also highlighted continued enthusiasm for sustainable investing, with 83 per cent of respondents keen on opportunities in that space. In Malaysia, it said 91 per cent of investors surveyed indicated very strong interest in transition investing, slightly higher than the 88 per cent recorded for sustainable investing. Both showed the second highest interest among the markets surveyed. These findings were revealed in the Bank's latest Sustainable Banking Report, which this year looks at transition investing and its potential to become the next wealth frontier. The report, titled "Transition investing: the next wealth frontier?", is based on a survey of 1,600 high-net-worth individuals across eight markets – Hong Kong, India, Mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates. The report revealed investor interest in a range of transition themes with the potential to support the shift towards a low-carbon economy, with green hydrogen (49 per cent), low-emission fuels (47 per cent), and carbon capture and storage (45 per cent) emerging as the top three themes of interest. Investors in Malaysia indicated similar themes of interest, led by green hydrogen (51 per cent), followed by electric vehicles (44 per cent) and low-emission fuels (43 per cent). Despite growing interest, the report highlighted that investors face several barriers when it comes to transition investing. The perception of higher risks (50 per cent) was a key consideration among investors, with the report also highlighting concerns around the lack of benchmarking to compare investment products (46 per cent) and the view that such investments could yield low returns (44 per cent). In Malaysia, however, the results painted a slightly different picture, with low returns (59 per cent) and lack of benchmarks (56 per cent) emerging as the top two concerns. While investor appetite is strong, the findings indicated a gap in understanding, with only 15 per cent of investors able to fully define the concept of transition investing. To address this challenge and support clients, Standard Chartered has launched a Transition Investing Guide to provide clear and practical investor guidance for evaluating transition-related funds. Standard Chartered Malaysia head of wealth and retail banking Harmander Mahal said as Malaysia pushes ahead on the path to net zero by 2050, sustainable finance has emerged as a catalyst for the shift to decarbonisation. "Our affluent clients have also shown increasing enthusiasm in the concept of transition investing with climate transition funds growing in prominence. "For us, this presents an opportunity to convert that interest into action by equipping investors with the knowledge to integrate transition investing into their portfolio as the economy move towards the decarbonisation agenda in the long term," he added.

Vietnam and Egypt strengthen economic ties, eye bilateral FTA

A working meeting between Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade and Egypt's Investment and Foreign Trade Ministry. — VNA/VNS HANOI: A working delegation from Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade, led by Deputy Minister Phan Thị Thang, held a meeting on Aug 4 with leaders of Egypt's Investment and Foreign Trade Ministry. The meeting took place as part of President Luong Cuong's state visit to Egypt from Aug 3 to 6. At the meeting, Thang expressed appreciation for the close cooperation extended by the Egyptian ministry to its Vietnamese counterpart in recent years. She also highlighted the marked progress in bilateral ties and reaffirmed Vietnam's high regard for Egypt's important role in North Africa and across the African continent. Egypt is currently Vietnam's largest trade partner in North Africa, with bilateral trade reaching over US$472 million in 2024. The official noted that the trade structure between the two countries is complementary rather than competitive, offering substantial potential to expand cooperation, especially in the fields of industry, agriculture, investment, and logistics. She emphasised the need for both ministries to work more closely to advance economic and trade relations in line with the overall partnership between the two nations. Both sides agreed to step up coordination in organising trade and investment promotion activities to expand scale and move toward a more balanced bilateral trade relationship. On this occasion, the Egyptian side announced the plan to send a business delegation to Vietnam in 2025 and proposed joint efforts to organise promotion events. Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El Khatib praised the long-standing friendship between the two countries, and commended Vietnam's strong economic growth in recent years. He highlighted Egypt's geographic advantages and its wide network of economic agreements with the European Union and African nations, as well as the country's potential in logistics, renewable energy, oil and gas, and industries such as textiles, fertilisers, and chemicals. During the meeting, both sides agreed to establish a joint working group to study the feasibility of a Vietnam–Egypt Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The group will assess the potential benefits such an agreement could bring to both countries, helping promote balanced growth in trade and investment. Additionally, the two sides consented to coordinate in organising the third session of the Vietnam–Egypt subcommittee on trade and industry cooperation in Vietnam, tentatively scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025. The session will focus on detailed cooperation in trade and industrial development. According to statistics, trade between Vietnam and Egypt reached $472.6 million in 2024, up 9.4 per cent from the previous year. In the first half of 2025 alone, trade totalled $266.9 million, an increase of 8 per cent year-on-year, all of which was made up of Vietnam's exports to Egypt. Vietnam's key exports to Egypt include coffee, mobile phones and components, vehicles and parts, electronics, seafood, pepper, machinery and equipment, fruits and vegetables, cashew nuts, textile fibers, garments, and base metals. — Vietnam News/ANN
