Behind the music - Padraig Cooney & Bedtime Now
Pádraig Cooney & Bedtime Now have released their new single, The Hardest Thing. We asked Pádraig the BIG questions . . .
After seven years in rock bands Autre Monde, Skelocrats, and Land Lovers, Pádraig Cooney & Bedtime Now is the new project from the Popical Island founder.
Formed in late 2024, the quartet of Pádraig (vocal and rhythm guitar, Ross Hamer (bass), Danny Carroll (lead guitar), and Dónal Walsh (drums) recorded their debut album with producers David Tapley (Tandem Felix) and Daniel Fox (Gilla Band).
Recorded in Sonic Studios, The Hardest Thing marks Pádraig's return to earthier influences like Neil Young, John Cale and Warren Zevon.
Speaking about the new track, he says "I am drawn to the sound of records made in the 1970s, especially a certain strain of antagonistic singer-songwriter, and music fitting that description informed the production choices that we made".
Bedtime Now's debut album will be released via nascent indie collective No Effort this October and the band make a rare live appearance in Anseo, Dublin on 20 September.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I am the only member of my extended family who did not become a professional footballer.
I am blessed with a full and luscious head of hair.
I have worn glasses since the week after Roy Keane's Ireland debut v Chile in 1991, as at that game my dad challenged me to read out the writing on the tricolours around the ground and I struggled pathetically in the effort.
How would you describe your music?
It usually arises passively, i.e. I get a tune in my head and go from there. Sitting down to write a song from nothing is not something I have ever done well. It can be played on wooden instruments and electronic gadgets alike. I work very hard on lyrics.
Richard Thompson, Warren Zevon, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Randy Newman, Brian Eno, John Cale... aul lads from yesteryear like me.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Oasis in Páirc Uí Chaoimh in 1996.
What was the first record you ever bought?
I was given a voucher for Christmas and used it on R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People, Out of Time and Monster in one gluttonous moment in HMV in The Square, Tallaght.
What's your favourite song right now?
Shirley Collins and The Albion Band doing Claudy Banks from 1971. I don't know many current songs but Hamer Place's Gerry's Retired from a couple of months ago is a banger.
Favourite lyric of all time?
There's no answer to this but here's one that tickles me, it's Dermot, Dermot, Dermot, Dermot by Groom from their 2014 album Bread and Jam: "I went to the National Gallery Where I met up with Tom and Valerie, We started talking about Tom's salary, And some other kind of mundane things, And then talked turned around to Dermot, And how every day he's becoming a doormat, Wouldn't be surprised if he'll be losing his job soon, He's only got himself to blame Dermot, Dermot, Dermot, Dermot, What's to become of Dermot? He's a real nice fella, yeah he's totally sound until the moment that he's not around, So I left the National Gallery, Said good bye to Tom and Valerie, Made my way up there to Merrion Square, And who'd I meet, but Dermot, there, Hey you know I was just talking to Tom and Val, And if you ask me I don't things are going so well, Wouldn't be surprised if they'll be breaking up soon, They've only got themselves to blame Dermot, Dermot, Dermot, Dermot, What's to become of them, Dermot? They're real nice people, yeah, they're totally sound, Until the moment that they're not around."

Olivia, 34, shared a number of behind-the-scenes snaps on the set of the flagship ITV Show. Her cover shot showed the star posing in her dressing room in a white vest top, skimpy black trousers as her hair was pulled up. Another video was taken by her entourage as she was on the set of This Morning with her co-star Dermot O'Leary. She danced in an orange top and high-waisted navy trousers as the cameras and production teams moved around her. A third video showed the star getting a make-up top up as a stylist fluttered around fixing her hair whilst she looked through her cue cards. The former reality star also posed in her glasses as the face of an exclusive VIP event for Boots opticians. However, she also relaxed away from the cameras as she attended the Oasis concert at Wembley Stadium with her husband Bradley Dack. He looked absolutely delighted as he wrapped his arms around her in an intimate selfie from their private hospitality box. Not stopping there, she was busy in the voiceover booth recording segments for forthcoming editions of Olivia Attwood's Bad Boyfriends. This Morning fans deliver verdict on Olivia Attwood as she makes her debut as new co-host with Dermot O'Leary After that, the star met a group of fans on the set of a special Love Island fashion event for eBay Live. She was dressed in a silk white wrap top with beige wide leg trousers as she was joined by Casey O'Gorman and Sophie Piper. Olivia captioned the album: "I get around." The star previously faced backlash when she made her debut on the flagship ITV daytime magazine programme. Olivia Attwood's Career History From Monster grid girl and Love Island star to daytime telly panellist and respected documentary maker, Olivia Attwood has made a huge career pivot in recent years... Olivia first started as a Monster grid girl at motorsport events in 2012 when she was 19-years-old, and did it right up until she went into Love Island in 2017. After placing third in the reality show with then-boyfriend Chris Hughes, she starred in their own spin-off series, Chris & Olivia: Crackin' On, in 2018. Later that year, she appeared on Celebs Go Dating and then joined the cast of The Only Way Is Essex in 2019, where she had a number of fiery on-screen rows. In 2020, the reality TV veteran began starring in her own reality series on ITVBe titled Olivia Meets Her Match, which followed her wedding preparations with footballer Bradley Dack. In 2021, the tide started to turn. Olivia made appearances on household shows Lorraine, Tipping Point: Lucky Stars and Loose Women. Then, in 2022, ITV commissioned her for her first ever documentary series. She presented Olivia Attwood: Getting Filthy Rich, which explored women selling sexual content online. In June 2023, ITV commissioned Olivia Marries Her Match and made her a regular guest panellist on Loose Women. Her most recent docu-series, Olivia Attwood: The Price of Perfection, aired in January this year where she sensitively explored the cosmetic industry. Her reality background didn't go down well with some of the more traditionalist viewers, who vowed to switch off. Olivia clapped back at the trolls who shared their dismay with her appointment in the role, as she insisted "there's much more to me." Her colleague Josie Gibson, 40, who is a regular presenter on This Morning, later defended Olivia, saying she's 'brilliant' in the role. She told The Sun: "Oh my God she's brilliant. It's brilliant she gets to do this and I think she's really good. Yeah, really good. Those who know me understand the hard work I've put in to get where I am today. Olivia Attwood "Honestly, you get some backlash like that in this industry and I really don't know why people do it." The former Big Brother star added: "I'll never understand why people do it, you know. To me, I've always loved to see people do well and I genuinely love it. "I think Olivia is brilliant in the role." 10 Olivia Attwood was also the face for an exclusive VIP event for Boots Opticians Credit: 10 Olivia danced with her co-host Dermot O'Leary in a video captured by her entourage Credit: 10 She gave her 2.4million fans a sneak peak her working life Credit: 10 She's also been busy getting new episodes together for her reality show, Bad Boyfriends Credit: 10 The personality delighted meeting fans on the set of Ebay Live's Love Island event Credit: 10 Olivia still managed to get some personal time in with her husband Credit:

Actor Gary Busey pleads guilty to sexual offence at horror convention
The 81-year-old Buddy Holly star's manager, Ron Sampson, said in an email on Friday that the actor admitted to touching a woman's buttocks 'over clothing during an 8-10 second photo op'. Actor Gary Busey has pleaded guilty to a sexual offence stemming from an appearance at a 2022 horror convention in New Jersey, according to his representatives and court records. The 81-year-old Buddy Holly star's manager, Ron Sampson, said in an email on Friday that the actor admitted to touching a woman's buttocks 'over clothing during an 8-10 second photo op'. Busey entered a guilty plea to a single count of criminal sexual contact during a virtual hearing in state court in Camden on Thursday. The actor had been accused of inappropriately touching at least three women at the Monster-Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Cherry Hill, a South Jersey town and suburb of Philadelphia. Organisers of the event acknowledged at the time that an unnamed celebrity guest was 'removed from the convention and instructed not to return' and that affected attendees were encouraged to contact police. Busey had been scheduled as a featured guest for all three days of the event. He was initially charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact and one count of harassment. Busey's lawyer Blair Zwillman confirmed on Friday that the other charges were dropped as part of a plea deal reached with prosecutors. The actor faces up to five years' probation and fines when he is sentenced September 18. 'In my view Mr Busey was 'overcharged' probably based on his star status,' Mr Zwillman said in an email. 'He could have just as easily been charged with the disorderly persons offence of harassment by 'offensive touching'.' Camden County prosecutors did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Friday. Busey is widely known as a character actor, largely in supporting roles, though he came to attention and was nominated for an Oscar for best actor for playing the title role in the 1978 film The Buddy Holly Story.
