
Karnataka Govt transfers holy books burning case to CID
The State Government has transferred the case of alleged burning of holy books, including the Quran and Hadit books stolen from a mosque in Santi Bastawad village in Belagavi district, to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Believers visiting the mosque for prayers found a book shelf ransacked on May 11. The books were found, half-burnt in a field on the outskirts of the village. A few days later, village residents and members of Muslim organisations held a protest in Belagavi demanding action on the accused .
Police commissioner Borase Bhushan Gulabrao told reporters in Belagavi on Sunday (June 1, 2025) that the local investigators would fully cooperate with the CID team. We are confident of tracing and arresting the accused soon, he said.

CID introduces AI-based biometric data collection unit
Pune: The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) introduced an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based data measurement system on Wednesday at the Pashan headquarters of Pune rural police selected for the pilot project. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Additional director general of police (CID) Sunil Ramanand said, "The centre has been equipped with all the hardware and software required to take biometric data of criminals, both accused and convicted persons." The centre will take photographs of arrested persons from 12 different angles, fingerprints, iris scans, and other features. "It will collect samples for DNA fingerprints depending on the nature of crime," Ramanand said. The data will be stored on NIC's cloud server and available across India on the Crime and Criminal Tracking System. If a person is arrested, his or her entire data will be recorded. This will help police to track down the suspects in the crime with ease by just feeding the modus operandi of the suspects of a particular type of crime. "The AI will automatically match the features of the suspects even if they change their looks or alter their hairstyle or weight. He or she will be identified," he said. In the next few days, the system will be introduced in Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad. The data of an arrested or convicted person will remain uploaded on the cloud server for the next 75 years.
