UKM's Dr. Anuar Ahmad warns of declining patriotism in youth
Reflecting on a recent online forum on patriotism hosted by UKM's Minda platform, Anuar said both panellists, former Mubarak president Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Rahman and historian Dr Sahul Hamid, agreed that patriotism in Malaysia today is worryingly low.
'If people have lost their pride in the country and no longer see the nation as a vital part of their lives, we risk weakening our nation-building process,' said Anuar.
He said when citizens no longer feel connected to the nation emotionally or ideologically, the foundations of the country become vulnerable to disruption, with apathy towards laws, the monarchy and national identity.
Citing figures from the Education Ministry's 2024 Education Development Plan, Anuar questioned the high equality index reported among students and teachers, with a score of 8.10 on average, deemed 'very satisfactory'.
'We are told that our education equality index is very high. But these numbers are difficult to interpret without knowing how the data was collected, the methodology used, or whether it was independently verified.
'A school with 99% Malay teachers will naturally report strong intra-community ties but that's not the same as national integration or equality across diverse groups.'
He pointed out that this disparity between official data and ground reality is part of a deeper problem, where education policy does not reflect the socio-political and cultural fragmentation that exists.
Anuar highlighted the increasing complexity of Malaysia's schooling landscape encompassing national, vernacular, international, religious and private schools, which has led to what he terms 'super diversity'.
'International schools in Malaysia now have more local students than foreign ones. This extreme diversity in our education system is a major challenge to building a common national identity.'
While acknowledging that vernacular schools are protected by law and institutions, Anuar argued that the challenge is not their existence but how the nation manages diversity to produce a generation that is patriotic.
'We must ask ourselves how we can ensure that our children feel love and loyalty for the country when they grow up so separated by language, curriculum and school culture.'
He criticised current educational priorities that focus primarily on exam results and individual success, sidelining national values like patriotism and unity.
'For years, our education discourse has revolved around academic achievement and teacher workloads, but rarely have we asked how education builds a strong, united nation.'
Calling for a bold reset in the next national education blueprint, he proposed that patriotism, unity and self-worth be embedded not just in the curriculum but also in co-curricular activities and policies.
'We are starting a new education development plan. This is our opportunity. If we fail to strengthen these values now, in 10 years we may find ourselves with a generation that is technically skilled but emotionally detached from the nation.
'Our children are growing up in silos – Chinese schools with one ethos, religious schools with another. If we don't build a shared patriotic foundation, we risk becoming strangers in our own country.'
Anuar urged educators and the government to treat patriotism and national unity as urgent priorities, not as an afterthought.

'Everyone supports their team or their state or their province, but that does not allow them to create chaos and tolerate hooliganism. So we'll make a difference. Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. Anwar said while passion in sports was natural, it should not be used to justify behaviour that contradicted the values of sportsmanship. 'People cry when they win and they cry when they lose. You know, which means you cannot deny the passion. But it does not warrant them to take actions which run contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship,' he said. He added that greater tolerance was needed, as 'intolerance runs contrary to the very spirit of sports — which is about bringing people together, embracing differences, and sharing a deep passion.' Anwar also highlighted the unique role of sportsmanship in uniting Malaysians across racial lines, noting that such values were often absent in politics. 'There's no language in politics for sportsmanship. Politics is where you kill one another — I mean, not literally, hopefully. But only in sports, not in culture, not in the arts, not in economic rivalry. 'But in sports, there is this term called sportsmanship, which essentially means you must work hard, try to excel and win — but also accept that the best man, woman, or team will win. And that is the spirit of sportsmanship,' he said. Reflecting on Malaysia's past, which was at times marked by racial antagonism, Anwar recalled how sports like football and badminton served as powerful unifying forces during those difficult periods. 'It doesn't matter whether he's Malay, Chinese, Dayak or Indian — we consider them all Malaysian. And that's what I feel we need to promote. But of course, we also need to excel. 'So everybody's waiting — under Hannah and now with Norza (Olympic Council of Malaysia President Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria) — where we expect at least one gold medal from the Olympics. Otherwise, they'll be in trouble,' he said jokingly. Sharing a personal anecdote, Anwar said he often advised his grandchildren, who sometimes got upset after losing in games like chess or football. 'I said, I told them that's not the spirit. The spirit of course, is to win, but the sportsmanship, the the term sportsmanship is such a value-laden term. Former S'gor MB Khir Toyo officially joins Bersatu, says Umno no longer dominant
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo has officially joined Bersatu, citing his confidence in the sincerity of the party's leadership in championing the Malay cause. Taking a direct swipe at his former party, Khir said Umno is no longer dominant and has become merely a 'supplement' to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. 'Umno has clearly been replaced by Bersatu. Bersatu now holds far more parliamentary seats than Umno,' he told Astro Awani during the announcement of his Bersatu membership. He also predicted that Umno would contest fewer seats than PKR in the upcoming general election. 'How can Umno be dominant when it contests fewer seats? If it continues hiding under PH's armpit, it will forever be just a supplementary party,' he said. Dr Khir stressed that he was not aiming for a major position but wanted to contribute to a party that can produce just and capable Malay leaders — something he believes Umno once did. 'I have no grand ambitions. I only want to use whatever energy I have left to help ensure the country's leadership is in the hands of Malays who are fair to all,' he said. He expressed gratitude to Umno and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for giving him the opportunity to serve as Selangor mentri besar but made it clear he no longer aligned with Umno's direction. 'I truly appreciate the opportunities given to me by Umno, especially by Tun Dr Mahathir, but I cannot continue in a party that has lost its purpose,' he said. The three-term Sungai Panjang assemblyman served as the 13th mentri besar of Selangor from 2000 to 2008. In 2015, Dr Khir was sentenced to a year in jail on graft charges, after the Federal Court, on Sept 22, 2015, upheld his 12-month jail sentence and found him guilty of using his position to obtain two plots of land and a bungalow unit in Section 7, Shah Alam, eight years ago. He was granted parole on March 29, 2016, after serving half of his one-year prison term for corruption and became a free man after signing his end-of-parole document at the Klang District Parole Office on May 27 that year.

Khir Toyo SHAH ALAM – Former Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo has confirmed he has joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), despite anticipating criticism and accusations over his decision. In a Facebook statement on Wednesday, Khir said he is accustomed to negative perceptions and has no intention of pleasing those who have disliked him from the start. 'I know there will be a lot of slander when news spreads that I have chosen to become a member of Bersatu. 'For those who are unhappy with me, there will surely be countless things said to defame and condemn me across all media," he said. He said it would be foolish to live under the shadow of others' negative views, especially when it only serves to satisfy political enemies. 'They will be very happy when we fail in life,' he added. The former Sungai Panjang assemblyman said his decision was based on his belief in the sincerity of Bersatu's leadership in fighting for the Malay community and the country's future. He pointed out that Bersatu has surpassed Umno in parliamentary seats and, as a result, has greater potential to form a government at both state and national levels. 'God determines the question of winning or losing, but effort must be made and our ambitions must be demonstrated with determination,' he said. Commenting on Umno's current position, he said he does not see the party regaining dominance if it contests fewer seats than its coalition partners, such as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). 'Umno has become a 'supplement' party to PH (Pakatan Harapan). I don't want to fight in a party that only serves as a complement to another party,' he said. Reflecting on his contributions to Umno, Khir expressed gratitude to the party and to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had entrusted him to lead Selangor. Khir described that he no longer harbours grand political ambitions but wishes to contribute his remaining energy to ensure the country is led by just Malay leaders. 'I am a small man, I have no great ambitions. Allow me to spend whatever energy I have left to ensure the nation's leadership remains in the hands of Malay leaders who can deliver justice to all, as Umno once did,' he said.
