All foreigners in Gulf states eligible for tourist visa on arrival
KUWAIT: Interior Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah issued a decision on Sunday allowing all foreigners residing in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states to enter Kuwait by obtaining a tourist visa on arrival at all entry points. The decision was published in the official gazette Kuwait Al-Youm on Sunday and is effective immediately. Under a recently issued decision, a tourist visa is valid for 90 days. According to the decision, GCC foreign residents must have a residency permit in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain valid for at least six months.
The decision also abolishes regulations issued in 2008 and which allowed only certain categories of GCC residents like doctors, engineers, judges, executives and others to avail of the tourist visa on arrival. Around 25 million foreigners residing in the five GCC member states can benefit from the Kuwaiti visa on arrival. Nationals of most countries in Europe, North America, some Latin American countries and leading Asian nations like China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and others have been allowed to obtain tourist visas on arrival for many years.
Over the past 15 months, Kuwait has eased restrictions on visas to foreigners in a bid to open up for visitors. It has eased restrictions on family visas allowing expats working in Kuwait to bring their close relatives like spouses, children, parents and others to visit them for a maximum of one month. It has also made it easier for hotels to sponsor visitors and for companies to obtain business visas for their foreign partners.

KRCS to utilize local dates, engineering expertise for projects

KUWAIT: A man harvests dates from a palm tree in this file photo. — Photo by Yasser Al-Zayyat KUWAIT: The Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) is working with the Kuwait Agricultural Engineers Society on a plan to produce dates locally for overseas relief programs. Under the proposal, agricultural engineers would provide full technical feasibility studies. KRCS chair Khaled Al-Mughamis said the society is 'keen to implement humanitarian and development projects inside and outside Kuwait in various fields, particularly the agricultural sector.' Speaking after meeting association chair Abbas Abdulredha, Al-Mughamis said the Red Crescent wants to 'strengthen cooperation with the association in this field in line with its goals of supporting communities and achieving sustainable development.' Kuwaiti charities have in the past sent locally harvested dates to communities in need abroad, including Syria and Yemen. Those initiatives often coincide with the start of the date harvest season, when farm owners donate part of their crops as zakat. The fruit is collected, packaged and shipped using modern preservation methods, with the aim of supporting low-income families in various countries. Abdulredha said the talks focused on ways to coordinate future humanitarian projects with the Red Crescent. 'These charitable projects include agriculture and fisheries,' he said, noting the engineers' role will be to 'provide technical feasibility studies from all angles.' He said the date production plan was part of that discussion and stressed the association's commitment to using its expertise to serve society and enhance Kuwait's role in charitable and humanitarian work. — Agencies

S Korea, Vietnam leaders pledge closer trade ties

SEOUL: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung (right) attends a press conference with Vietnam's General Secretary of the Communist Party To Lam at the presidential office in Seoul on August 11, 2025. -- AFP SEOUL: South Korea and Vietnam's leaders pledged to deepen economic cooperation on Monday as their export-dependent countries try to shore up longstanding supply chains as US President Donald Trump's tariffs shake up global trade. There was no public discussion of the levies - 15 percent on South Korean products going to the US and 20 percent for Vietnamese goods - as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung hosted Vietnam's To Lam as his first state guest since taking office in June. But Trump's tariffs on products from Asian countries have increased uncertainty over future business commitments, with Vietnamese official data showing a slowdown in new investment. Lam, the Vietnamese Communist Party general secretary, said they agreed to expand trade with each other to $150 billion by 2030 - from about $86.8 billion in 2024 - and that Vietnam welcomed an increase in investment by South Korean businesses. 'Our countries agreed that about 10,000 Korean companies operating in Vietnam contribute to Vietnam's economic development and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries,' Lee said in a televised address. 'I asked for a continued interest in the stable economic activities of our companies in Vietnam,' Lam added. Lam led a delegation of industry, trade, foreign and technology ministers and senior party and parliament members on the four-day state visit. The countries signed 10 memoranda of understanding, pledging cooperation in areas including nuclear and renewable energy, monetary and financial policies, and science and technology, Lee's office said. Other agreements covered cooperation in infrastructure, including high-speed rail, Lee's office said. In a speech at South Korea's Yonsei University, Lam urged South Korean companies to keep investing in Vietnam and warned of the risk of fragmenting supply chains. 'Vietnam welcomes South Korean enterprises to expand their investments in the country, emphasizing substantive cooperation in technology,' Lam said. Lam said the countries should make it a top priority to jointly develop semiconductors and make breakthroughs in new materials, calling on Korea to keep nurturing Vietnamese talent in areas like AI, biotech and shipbuilding. A number of major South Korean companies including Samsung Electronics have used Vietnam as an export hub, benefiting for years from lower labor costs, generous tax incentives and Hanoi's numerous free trade pacts with dozens of countries. South Korean companies have been cited as potential investors in Vietnam's planned nuclear energy, LNG power plants and high-speed rail projects. — Reuters
