‘They won't win the league': Carragher rages at Liverpool's ‘unbelievable and shocking' defending in season opener against Bournemouth
Club legend and former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has lashed out at the side's 'unbelievable' and 'absolutely shocking' defending, which saw them concede two goals in the second half. Carragher said Liverpool will not retain their Premier League title if they continue with those standards.
'It is unbelievable,' said Carragher after the game. 'It's fantastic from Semenyo – but Liverpool have had this problem. How many players were ahead of the ball – maybe eight players – when they were winning 2-1? That can't happen. It's absolutely shocking at this level. For Semenyo to run that far and get his shot away is incredible – but where Konate is going? He had a really, really poor night tonight at centre-back.'
Late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah led Liverpool to the win after they were given a scare by Antoine Semenyo whose brace eliminated Arne Slot's two-goal lead in a quick flash. Earlier, Hugo Ekitike opened Liverpool's account before Cody Gakpo doubled the lead for the home team.
Carragher slammed Liverpool's defending and said it has been poor during their pre-season campaign as well, where the Reds conceded a 4-2 defeat against AC Milan, while they also conceded twice against Athletic Club and Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.
'That is not right. It's not,' said Carragher. 'It's only game on top of the Community Shield – but I've watched enough football in my life. This idea that everyone bombs forward, it's not for me. I don't like it. At no time last week in the Community Shield did I ever feel Liverpool were in control of the game. You can draw 2-2 with Palace, that can happen. But it's how easy Crystal Palace could get at Liverpool, how easy it was tonight. In the first half, Bournemouth should have been at least 2-0 up at one stage,' said Carragher.
'There is definitely a problem that Arne Slot has to solve. People say 'they need a centre-back'. A centre-back doesn't fix that. He just takes Konate's place. It's about the make-up of the team with two attacking full-backs and a number ten who more interested in getting on the ball than defending like Szoboszlai was last season. If Liverpool continue like that, I don't think they will win the league,' he added.

Unrelenting Palace Hold Chelsea To 0-0 At Stamford Bridge
Chelsea struggled offensively in a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace. Palace's Eze had a goal disallowed by VAR. Nottingham Forest beat Brentford 3-1, easing pre-season concerns. Chelsea experienced a post-Club World Cup slump, narrowly securing a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener on Sunday. Palace were denied an early lead when Eberechi Eze's free-kick was disallowed following a VAR review, ruling Marc Guehi for obstructing the Chelsea wall. New Chelsea signing Estevao came closest to scoring for the home team, but the recently crowned world champions struggled offensively against a well-organised Palace defence. Despite speculation linking Guehi and Eze with moves to Liverpool and Tottenham respectively, both players started for Palace. 'As long as they are 100 percent committed, they will play as they are so good," said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. 'They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great persons and that's what I expected." Eze believed he had scored with a powerful free-kick that beat Robert Sanchez, but the goal was disallowed due to Guehi creating a gap by pushing Moises Caicedo into the Chelsea wall. 'They played about eight (pre-season) games, we played just two so we tried our best," said the Italian. 'We expected a tough game. Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn't concede any chances." Estevao, who scored against Chelsea at the Club World Cup in his final game for Palmeiras, showed promise but lacked composure when he missed a chance from the middle of the box. Nottingham Forest dismissed manager Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-season concerns over a lack of signings with a convincing 3-1 victory over a heavily rotated Brentford. Chris Wood scored twice, with Dan Ndyoe also netting on his debut for Forest, making it a tough afternoon for new Brentford boss Keith Andrews. 'It was a very good first half. The combinations were really good, beautiful goals," said Nuno. 'This is why we are insisting on a good balanced squad that gives us options and solutions." Brentford lost their manager, captain, and top scorer in the off-season. Thomas Frank left for Tottenham, Bryan Mbeumo moved to Manchester United, and Arsenal signed Christian Norgaard. Yoane Wissa was also absent, expected to join Newcastle. Igor Thiago's penalty goal late on was the only consolation for Brentford. 'I do have genuine belief but we have to take responsibility for a first half that wasn't good enough," said Andrews. view comments First Published: August 17, 2025, 22:01 IST News sports Unrelenting Palace Hold Chelsea To 0-0 At Stamford Bridge Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. PL: Chelsea, Palace battle out goalless draw, Nottingham beat Brentford 3-1
The early Premier League kick-off on Sunday provided very contrasting results as Chelsea were held to a frustrating goalless draw at home, while Nottingham Forest dazzled with a 3-1 win over Brentford. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea dominated proceedings with 71% possession and a host of chances, but failed to break down a resolute Crystal Palace side. Debutant Estevao and fellow Brazilian Andrey Santos came closest for the Blues in the second half, while Palace thought they had taken the lead in the first period through Eberechi Eze's free-kick, only for VAR to rule it out. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca handed debuts to several summer signings, including winger Jamie Gittens and centre-back Josh Acheampong, the latter starting in place of the injured Levi Colwill. Despite the attacking trio of Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, and Pedro Neto creating pressure throughout, Chelsea were unable to convert, leaving them to settle for a point in their season opener. Meanwhile, over at the City Ground, Nottingham Forest delivered a blistering first-half performance to brush aside Brentford. Chris Wood netted twice before the break, the first a clever finish from a corner mix-up, and the second after rounding the keeper following Elliot Anderson's slick through-ball. Swiss winger Dan Ndoye, another summer addition, also opened his Forest account with a well-taken header, as Nuno Espírito Santo's side raced to a 3-0 halftime lead. Brentford pulled one back via an Igor Thiago penalty late on, but the damage had been done. Forest's win marks their first opening-day victory since 2017, while Chelsea will be left to rue missed chances in front of their home crowd. The early signs suggest Forest could be one to watch this season — while Chelsea search for cutting edge in attack and may look to add another forward this window.
