Will Smith Revealed The Shocking Reason He Turned Down "Inception," And I Honestly Can't Believe It

Buzz Feed16-06-2025
Inception is, without a doubt, one of Christopher Nolan's most beloved films. The 2010 sci-fi actioner made over $837 million worldwide, and it got nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture. (It ended up winning four, too: Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects.)
Among many other things, the film featured an iconic performance from Leonardo DiCaprio as protagonist Dominic Cobb — and, as it turns out, we came very close to getting a different person in that role instead.
The person in question: Oscar-winning megastar Will Smith — who recently revealed to Kiss Xtra that he was offered the role of Dominic first, and ultimately turned it down.
Now, actors turn down roles all the time. This is especially true in Will's case: Back in 2019, he revealed that he once passed on the lead role in the also-legendary action film The Matrix. But his reasoning for walking away from Inception — a high-concept film that admittedly takes a few viewings to really absorb — is, well, pretty interesting.
'I don't think I've ever said it publicly but I am going to say it because we are opening up to one another,' Will said. 'Chris Nolan brought me Inception first, and I didn't get it." Since Will was specifically offered the role, what he presumably means when he says he didn't "get it" is that he quite literally didn't understand the plot of Inception.
"I've never said that out loud," he admitted. "Now that I think about it, it's those movies that go into those alternate realities… they don't pitch well." He also went on to say that it "hurt" to pass on Inception and The Matrix, only to watch them become so successful afterwards.

Harrison Ford's Emmy chances for ‘Shrinking,' by the numbers

Hollywood awards voters owe Harrison Ford a serious apology. A supporting Emmy for his performance as the gruff yet insightful therapist Paul Rhoades on Apple TV+'s comedy 'Shrinking' would be a good start. Ford's Emmy nomination for 'Shrinking' Season 2 is his first ever. Granted, most of his small-screen work has come about recently. But Ford's prolific film career also has yielded just one Oscar nomination, for lead actor in 1986, for his soulful performance in 'Witness.' Factoring in Screen Actors Guild (two), BAFTA (one) and Golden Globe nominations (five), Ford's major awards nominations barely reach double digits. Ford has never won a major competitive film or television award. On the other hand, he has a trophy case worth of lifetime achievement awards (from AFI, César Awards, Cannes and more), which suggests that his contributions to the industry haven't gone unnoticed. 'The Fugitive,' a 1993 blockbuster led by an emotionally charged Ford, drew seven Oscar nominations, including for best picture and eventual supporting actor winner Tommy Lee Jones, but none for Ford. Ford drew some critics groups' attention for his thoughtful performance in this 2013 film as baseball executive Branch Rickey, who brought Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) into the major leagues. Forty years ago, no one envisioned a supporting actor TV award as a career highlight for Ford. But an Emmy at age 83 would be lovely — and he's the frontrunner. 'Shrinking' Season 3 has already wrapped, giving Emmy voters a clear path to justice for Ford: not just one but multiple Emmys.

What to know about Louis Vuitton luggage Beyoncé gave her dancers for hard work on tour

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter not only ended her "Cowboy Carter" tour on a history-making note, she celebrated her dancers with a surprise gift — personalized Louis Vuitton luggage and a special message. The Emmy-winning singer closed out her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas on July 26. She ended her run with a bang, bringing out Destiny's Child, Jay-Z and Shaboozey for surprise performances. The show marked the end of her 32-stop stadium tour that spanned the U.S. and Europe and became the highest grossing country tour with over $400 million in earnings. Shortly after the final concert, several of Beyoncé's dancers shared videos on social media unboxing a special gift from Beyoncé: a new Louis Vuitton carry-on. The gift appeared to be the luxury brand's grey Horizon 55 monogram eclipse rollable carry-on. There are several versions of the carry-on, with this particular version seemingly priced at $3,450. Meanwhile other versions such as the Louis Vuitton Horizon 55 monogram empreinte leather are going for $5,250. Each dancer's suitcase also came with a name tag engraved with their initials and a letter from Beyoncé and her Parkwood Entertainment company. In a now viral video shared on X, one dancer shared his excitement for the luxurious gift as he read his note aloud: "Congratulations on the completion of the 'Cowboy Carter' tour. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication the last couple of months. We hope you enjoy your gift and know that we greatly appreciate all your contributions to this tour and its success." As fans know, Beyoncé first debuted the highly anticipated show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with 39 songs on the set list. The tour proved to be a revolutionary spectacle filled with fashion, different music genres and most notably country music and cultural commentary as she challenged industry norms. The megastar first released her eighth studio album, "Cowboy Carter," in March 2024. It has since made history and broken multiple records. As Beyoncé's first country album, she deliberately featured country legends and emerging Black country artists alike. Unbothered Unc Denzel Washington ‘Doesn't Care' About Being Canceled, The Oscars, Or What Anyone Thinks Of Him

Source: Gilbert Flores / Getty Denzel Washington has been firmly in his unc era for some years, and on his latest press run for Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest remake, he continues to prove why he's one of the funniest interview subjects around. When discussing his performance, which has already started bringing in rave reviews, and what it could mean for awards season, the two-time Academy Award winner said he couldn't be bothered to care about accolades at this point in his life. 'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff,' Washington said to Complex . 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I'm not that interested in Oscars. People ask me, 'Where do I keep it?' Well, next to the other one. I'm not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, [Oscars] aren't going to do me a bit of good.' Washington also made it clear that he doesn't give a hootennay about being canceled, nor will he be playing the social media game at his age. In an interview with Complex , he let it be known that he never signed up for all the fanfare. 'What made public support so important to begin with?' he said. 'I don't care who's following who. You can't lead and follow at the same time, and you can't follow and lead at the same time. I don't follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don't follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain't working out so well.' He continued, 'You can't be canceled if you haven't signed up. Don't sign up. Don't get me started. You know, chest is getting tight talking about it.' Washington has become a viral meme waiting to happen during every press run these days as he also delivered some much remembered one-liners during his media tour for Gladiator II , including when he dropped the news that he'd be appearing in Black Panther 3. The 'Malcolm X' actor and his director bestie, Lee, have been going unc for unc while promoting their latest collaboration, and they've also brought Rihanna's baby daddy A$AP Rocky along for the ride. As BOSSIP previously reported, the Harlem rapper absolutely loved his time working with both of the legends and was shocked to find that Washington knew more about current rap artists than he originally thought. 'Yo, Denzel plays more Memphis rap than anybody I know. He's just like, 'Alright, so what you f*** with, kid?' [I'm like,] 'Pardon me?' I tried to sound all old school and s*** like, 'I like Slick Rick…' and he's like, 'Oh, I f*** with Rick, of course. Rick the Ruler.' Then, he started saying Nas lyrics out of nowhere,' he said. 'Then Pac, then DMX, and then he starts talking about the young cats — Moneybagg Yo, NLE Choppa, NBA YoungBoy and these guys. I'm like, 'What is this man doing?!' But I'm here for it, like I f*** with it. I was shocked. He's an OG. You would expect him to listen to Miles Davis all day. Nah, he said, 'Throw on NLE Choppa,' [then Washington rapped] 'I don't do drive-bys no more, I walk 'em down.' That's verbatim.' This trio seems like a good time!
