Parents of medico stranded in Russia seek govts' help

Time of India21-07-2025
Chennai: Parents of S Kishore (22), studying medicine in Russia, urged the state and central govts to ensure his safe return, alleging that he was forcibly taken away to treat Russian soldiers injured in Ukraine war.
Kishore's father, Saravanan, a native of Kattumannarkovil, told reporters in Cuddalore on Sunday that his son had sent a voice message a couple of days ago, alleging that he was forcibly taken away by Russian army.
Saravanan said that he could not contact his son after that and feared that his life was in danger. "I could not contact my son through his mobile number. His friends informed us that he was taken by the police. We urge the Union and TN govts to take steps to rescue my son," he said.
Saravanan said Kishore was arrested by Russian police in 2023 on charges of delivering an illegal consignment while working part-time in a courier company. "He was duped into delivering the consignment. But police were forcing him to confess to the crime. Since he denied, they were harassing him,'' he said.
Saravanan said his son was forced to sign a document to work in Ukraine war, which he refused. "My son was confined in a dark room and tortured. There is no guarantee that he will come back alive. Now, we can't even contact him, and we don't know whether he is still alive or not," Saravanan said.

Christians living in fear of persecution, says CBCI president over detention and arrest of two Malayali nuns

KOCHI: Calling the detention and arrest of two Malayali nuns — one from Kannur and the other from Angamaly — in Chhattisgarh a "deeply painful incident", Mar Andrews Thazhath, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), said the matter had been taken up with the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, and MPs Suresh Gopi and George Kurien. 'But the general atmosphere is one of fear,' he told reporters at Mount St Thomas, the Syro-Malabar Church headquarters in Kakkanad on July 28. "The fact that these nuns were arrested on trumped-up charges of human trafficking is extremely alarming. They have also been accused of religious conversion. These actions by the authorities infringe upon the Right to Religious Freedom and amount to a gross violation of the Constitution," he said. Mar Thazhath added that a section of the population continues to see Christianity as a foreign religion. He said the Chhattisgarh incident is a clear violation of minority rights and religious freedoms guaranteed by the country's secular Constitution. 'The Durg incident is just one among several recent episodes of persecution of Christians. There have been cases where priests were even denied the right to wear cassocks and move freely within the country.'

Poland Scrambles Jets as Russia Launches Strikes on Ukraine

Ukraine faced another Russian drone and missile attack early Monday, with air raid alerts sounding across the country for at least six hours since midnight Kyiv time. Neighboring Poland scrambled its military jets, while Lithuanian media LRT cited local police as saying that an unidentified type of unmanned aircraft had entered its territory from Belarus. Ukraine's Air Defense said in a post on Telegram that it shot down and jammed 309 out of the 324 drones, as well as two out of seven missiles launched by Russia overnight. One of the main goals of the strike was an airfield in the western Khmelnytskyi region, although explosions were also heard in several central and southern areas of the country, it said. At least five civilians including a child were injured in Kyiv, the capital's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said in another Telegram post. Russia has stepped up air attacks on Ukraine with record numbers of drone raids in recent weeks, including an assault by 728 drones on July 9 that damaged residential buildings and infrastructure. Ukraine's monthly civilian casualties in June were the highest in three years, with 232 killed and 1,343 injured, according to the United Nations. Monday's barrage followed President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's discussion of Ukraine's military needs and further steps on sanctions with European leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen. 'We are constantly strengthening Ukraine's air shield, and it is vital to maintain clear understanding among partners of how exactly they can help,' Zelenskiy said in a post on X commenting on the attack.
