Parents of medico stranded in Russia seek govts' help

Time of India4 days ago
Chennai: Parents of S Kishore (22), studying medicine in Russia, urged the state and central govts to ensure his safe return, alleging that he was forcibly taken away to treat Russian soldiers injured in Ukraine war.
Kishore's father, Saravanan, a native of Kattumannarkovil, told reporters in Cuddalore on Sunday that his son had sent a voice message a couple of days ago, alleging that he was forcibly taken away by Russian army.
Saravanan said that he could not contact his son after that and feared that his life was in danger. "I could not contact my son through his mobile number. His friends informed us that he was taken by the police. We urge the Union and TN govts to take steps to rescue my son," he said.
Saravanan said Kishore was arrested by Russian police in 2023 on charges of delivering an illegal consignment while working part-time in a courier company. "He was duped into delivering the consignment. But police were forcing him to confess to the crime. Since he denied, they were harassing him,'' he said.
Saravanan said his son was forced to sign a document to work in Ukraine war, which he refused. "My son was confined in a dark room and tortured. There is no guarantee that he will come back alive. Now, we can't even contact him, and we don't know whether he is still alive or not," Saravanan said.

Central committee inspects constructions at Bheemili beach

Visakhapatnam: An expert committee constituted by the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change conducted an inspection on Friday at Bheemili beach to assess unauthorised constructions allegedly carried out by Avyaan Realtors, owned by P Neha Reddy and P Rohit Reddy—the daughter and son-in-law of former Rajya Sabha member P Vijaya Sai Reddy. These constructions reportedly violated coastal regulation zone (CRZ) rules. The Andhra Pradesh Coastal Zone Management Authority has filed a case in the Bheemili court against the company for constructing a concrete wall within CRZ limits without prior approval, violating provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986. Though the GVMC partially demolished the wall up to ground level, underground remnants still remain to be cleared. This inspection follows a public interest litigation (PIL No. 53/2024) filed in the AP High Court by Jana Sena corporator Peethala Murthy Yadav, who raised concerns about the large-scale unauthorised concrete structures built on the beach. The High Court ordered the immediate demolition of the illegal constructions and directed authorities to enforce environmental regulations strictly. The expert committee, comprising scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography, Coastal Zone Management Authority, State Pollution Control Board, and Central environment ministry, inspected the site to evaluate the environmental damage caused by the constructions. The committee also collected detailed information related to the case from Murthy Yadav and is expected to submit its report to the high court. The CRZ regulations, framed under the Environment Protection Act, aim to safeguard coastal ecosystems by restricting constructions within a buffer zone from the high tide line.

West Bengal leads with 3,127 cases of spurious fertilisers in 5 years

As Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan warns of strict action against the sale of fake, spurious, or sub-standard fertilisers across the country, recent data has shown that in the last five years, around 12 states and Union Territories (UTs) have reported such sales, with West Bengal leading the pack with 3,127 cases. Haryana, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala are among the other major states that reported the highest cases of spurious or sub-standard fertiliser sales, according to a reply by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers tabled in Parliament today. In Haryana, around 707 cases of spurious fertiliser sales were reported in the last five years, against which FIRs were registered in only 52 cases (just around 7 per cent). In West Bengal, out of the 3,127 cases of spurious fertilisers recorded in the last five years, action has been taken against all of them under the Fertiliser Control Order of 1985. In Punjab, around 487 cases of spurious fertiliser sales were recorded in the last five years. In response, the licenses of all the companies involved were revoked, while 146 cases were pending in court against the companies that supplied the spurious fertilisers. Additionally, 18 FIRs were registered against the defaulters. Interestingly, Rajasthan reported no cases of spurious fertilisers, according to the parliamentary reply. The government clarified in Parliament that the Fertiliser Control Order of 1985 clearly specifies fertiliser-wise standards, and any fertiliser not meeting these standards is not allowed to be sold. Any sale of spurious or sub-standard fertilisers is punishable under the Essential Commodities Act of 1955, the government noted in its reply. It also mentioned that the quality control of fertilisers falls under the purview of state governments. To regulate the sale of duplicate fertilisers, there is a district quality control mechanism in place to raise awareness and ensure vigilance at the field level.
