10 of the best secret gardens in Europe's major cities

El Capricho, on the outskirts of Madrid, is one of the city's lesser-known parks. It was built in 1784 by the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, and visited by 18th-century artists such as Francisco de Goya. Its 17-hectare gardens were designed by Jean Baptiste Mulot, who also worked on the Petit Trianon gardens at the Palace of Versailles. They are in three sections: Italian, French and English landscape. The park also has a small lake, a labyrinth, a bandstand and a mansion. One fascinating feature is an underground bunker, built in 1937 during the Spanish civil war – there are free guided tours at weekends and public holidays, 9am-9pm, April to September, then 9am-6.30pm, October to March, You're never far from a garden in London: 20% of the city is public green space, including about 3,000 parks, and it became the world's first National Park City in 2019. As well as eight royal parks and vast areas of greenery such as Hampstead Heath, the city has numerous hidden havens. One of them is the tiny Onion Garden near Victoria Station and St James's Park. According to the tour guide Jack Chesher, it was a 'derelict concrete corner' until late 2021, when it began to be transformed into the 'hanging gardens of Westminster'. The pocket park now has more than 200 species of plants – including a fair few onions – and displays artworks such as mosaic wall art and sculptures. There is a cafe and events including singing, craft workshops and poetry weekdays 7.30am-5.30pm (until 10pm on Thursdays), weekends 8.30am-4.30pm, This little-known walled garden, found down a dead-end road in the Marais, once belonged to the Hotel de Saint-Agnan. The hotel is now the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaisme (mahJ), and the garden, dedicated to Anne Frank, is open to the public. The central plot dates to the 17th century, and there is a small orchard, vegetable garden, pergola and children's play area. Most moving is the chestnut tree, planted in 2007 from a graft of the tree Anne looked at from her window in Amsterdam and wrote about in her diary. As well as the mahJ, the Pompidou Centre is a short walk away. Open 10am-9pm in summer, Hidden behind the south wall of the Palazzo Brera in the centre of Milan is an ancient medicinal garden. Humiliati priests grew plants and meditated here in the 14th century, followed by the Jesuits. In 1775, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria ordered it be turned into a botanical garden, and it has been managed by the University of Milan since 1935. The 5,000sq m garden still has its original layout: two oval ponds; an arboretum containing two centuries-old Ginkgo biloba trees and other exotic specimens; and themed flowerbeds (medicinal, Mediterranean, plants used for dyeing, textiles, paper …) Open 10am-6pm, Monday to Saturday, until 31 October, then 9.30am-4.30pm, until 31 March, Right in the middle of Stockholm, off the main shopping street of Drottninggatan, is a hidden courtyard garden. In the 18th century, it was the garden of the farm where the architect Carl Hårleman lived – two of the pear trees are thought to date from this period. Another architect, Willhelm Klemming, bought the property in 1901, renovated the garden and built the Centralbadets in 1904 – still an affordable day spa today. The lush little garden has a pond with a water sculpture, flowerbeds, winding paths and shady places to sit. There are three adjacent restaurants, all with outdoor at night, Hidden between Christiansborg Palace and the Royal Library in a historic part of central Copenhagen is a tranquil public garden. The garden was built in 1920 on top of Tøjhushavnen, an old naval port. Reminders of this maritime past include a pond in the middle of the garden, with an eight-metre-high column that shoots a spout of water every hour on the hour, and an old mooring ring at one end. There is also a statue of the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, whose manuscripts are in the library's collection and occasionally go on display. There are benches under the trees to sit quietly with your own 6am-10pm year-round, Tucked away in the palace district, the Károlyi-kert is thought to be Budapest's oldest garden, and contains Hungary's oldest mulberry tree. It was once the private garden of the Károlyi Palace, and has been a public park since 1932 (don't be deterred by the forbidding-looking iron railings). It is a mix of styles: geometric central flowerbeds and fountain, and English-style paths and plant arrangements. There is a children's playground and a statue of a beloved late resident: Károly, a Belgian giant rabbit. The wine bar and restaurant Csendes Társ is next to the park and has outdoor tables right outside the 8am-9pm in summer, The landscaped garden on top of the University of Warsaw's library is one of the biggest roof gardens in Europe, at more than a hectare (2.5 acres). It opened in 2002 and remains a little-known escape from the busy Powiśle district. A gentle slope leads to the lower garden, which has a duck pond and a series of granite sculptures. The upper garden is divided into four colourful sections: gold, silver, red and green. The areas are connected by paths, bridges and pergolas, and a cascading water feature joins the upper and lower parts. The garden has panoramic views of the Warsaw garden open from April to October, lower garden open year-round, Although it is close to sights such as Charles Bridge and Lesser Town Square, this terraced garden on Petřín hill is hard to find. Visitors who seek it out are rewarded with baroque beauty. The Italianate garden was created around 1720 on the site of Vrtbovský Palace's former vineyards. Three terraced platforms, connected by steps, are full of hornbeams, yews, and tens of thousands of flowers and shrubs. The gardens are decorated with statues, vases and paintings, and a ceremonial lighting event is held twice a year. From the pavilion on the top terrace, there are views of the castle, cathedral and old and new towns.£5 adults/£4 children/£15 families, open 10am-7pm, April to October, The National Garden in central Athens is a well-known attraction, but the city also has a lesser-known botanic garden, a 20-minute bus ride away. Most of this vast, 186-hectare (460-acre) green space is left as a natural habitat, but 11% (about 20 hectares) is cultivated and contains more than 2,500 plant species. Visitors can walk through the arboretum, with trees from most continents; the ornamental plants section, with 15 flowerbeds and 25 ponds; the historic plants sections, with species recorded by ancient Greeks; and many more – medicinal and aromatic plants, plants of economic importance, hothouse plants, rare plants … There is also a small weekdays 8am-2pm, weekends and holidays 10am-3pm, closed in August,

Ellen DeGeneres resurfaces with wife Portia de Rossi after comedian made disturbing bullying accusation

Ellen DeGeneres was spotted on Tuesday after a new bullying accusation was leveled against her. The 67-year-old comedian and talk show host was seen stepping out on London's Bond Street with her wife Portia de Rossi, 52. The couple affectionately held hands after the comedian and podcaster Adam Carolla alleged that DeGeneres' talk show staff were 'scared, real scared' on the two occasions that he was a guest on her show. The 61-year-old former Man Show co-host claimed that her staff were noticeably miserable while speaking with conservative journalist Emily Jashinsky. Despite the latest controversy, DeGeneres and de Rossi looked upbeat as they ventured out. The stand-up star was dressed casually in a navy blue cardigan over a pale-yellow striped polo shirt, along with white jeans and matching sneakers. She covered up with dark sunglasses and sported a silver luxury wristwatch with a leather band. Portia contrasted a mostly relaxed ensemble with a stylish white pinstriped double-breasted sport coat that she wore open. She paired it with a white shirt, cropped beige cargo pants and white trainers that complemented her wife's footwear. The married couple are coming up on their 17th wedding anniversary after they tied the knot August 16, 2008. DeGeneres and de Rossi said goodbye to the US and moved to the UK 'for good' earlier this year, which she has confirmed was in response to the election of President Donald Trump. Asked last week if she was staying in the UK because of Trump, she replied: 'Yes. We were hopeful for [Democratic presidential nominee] Kamala [Harris]. We were very hopeful and we thought at least let's get a place here.' She and Portia opted to settle in the Cotswolds, a popular spot for wealthy Londoners to keep second homes. 'The idea was that we would be here for three or four months of the year — but always when we came here we loved it and we thought it was beautiful,' DeGeneres shared. 'We thought when I stopped the show [Ellen's eponymous US talk show] one day, that it was so beautiful here that we would get a farm here and then go back there. 'And we got here the day before the election. We woke up to lots of texts from our friends and crying emojis. And we were like, "He [Trump] got in. So we are staying here. We are not going back. We are not leaving."' Earlier on Tuesday, comedian Adam Carolla made a series of startling new claims about Ellen DeGeneres ' notoriously hellish former chat show. The former Man Show host said staff on The Ellen DeGeneres Show 'were scared, real scared' during his two guest spots on the program, during a podcast appearance Tuesday. Speaking to conservative commentator Emily Jashinsky, Carolla provided a pair of anecdotes as purported proof. The first saw Carolla recall being repeatedly reminded by a 'scared-to-death' page to avoid certain topics before going on air. The second involved a writer for the show branding his then-boss 'the worst person I've ever met.' 'I knew they were scared because it's like, I was just sitting in the my dressing room and their like segment producer came in, and he went, "All right, so we went over all the stuff we're going to talk about," you know, Christmas vacation or whatever it was,' Carolla began. 'And and I go, "Yeah, yeah." 'And he goes, "You're not going to talk about meat or beef or anything like that, right?" 'And I go, "No, I'm not. I'm I'm I'm just going to talk about the stuff we talked about - going on vacation at Christmas or the kids or you know, their anecdotes.' At the time, DeGeneres had been a devout vegan - a lifestyle she has since abandoned. "Okay. All right. Okay. All right," Carolla recalled the staffer saying, after making one appearance on DeGeneres's show in March 2012 and another on an undisclosed date that Daily Mail has not been able to confirm. 'And he like came back like 20 minutes later right before I went out, and he's like, "Okay, but don't talk about beef or meat or any[thing],"' Carolla continued. 'I was like, "Oh, this guy's scared to death."' Carolla then offered up another never-before-heard tale about the show that was canned after allegations of toxicity from its longtime host surfaced in 2022. 'Later on, I talked to someone who signed an NDA, so I won't say his name, but he wrote for Ellen,' Carolla explained. 'I just went, "How's Ellen?" 'And uh, he said, "Worst person, uh, worst person. '"Not worst person I've worked for. Worst person I've ever met,"' the comic recalled. Carolla - who hosted the Man Show with Ellen's former ABC colleague Jimmy Kimmel in the early 2000s - then revealed the staffer had also worked for Rosie O'Donnell's daytime show during the 90s, and was still adamant his then-boss was the worst of the bunch. '[This was] when Rosie was the Official Chub Club,' Carolla pointed out, referring to the title of a book O'Donnell wrote the foreword for in 1999, titled, 'You Don't Have to Be Thin to Win: The Official Chub Club Coach's Workout Program. 'The worst and the meanest,' he said of the comic who, like DeGeneres, has left the country due to disapproval toward Donald Trump. He added of DeGeneres - who moved to the United Kingdom with wife moved to the United Kingdom following Trump's reelection and her show's cancellation - 'She's not a nice person at all.' Carolla ulitmately relished in the fact that the public now 'knows what [he] knew 15 years ago'. DeGeneres was first accused of creating a toxic work environment in 2020 by ten former and one then0current employee, leading her to issu an apology. 'But now it seems to be common knowledge.' After nearly two decades of being on the air, showrunners decided to plug on the program in 2022. DeGeneres, 67, told The Hollywood Reporter that year, 'I have to just trust that whatever happened during that time, which was obviously very, very difficult, happened for a reason. 'I think that I learned a lot, and there were some things that came up that I was shocked and surprised by. It was eye-opening, but I just trust that that had to happen.' As other anecdotes about her alleged on-set behavior continue come out, Carolla claimed he never saw it firsthand. 'She's not going to be mean to me. I'm a guest on on the show, right? So, I wouldn't know it from my exchanges,' he explained to Jashinsky.

Welcome to Vini World! Real Madrid star transforms Rio de Janeiro town into his own THEME PARK to celebrate his 25th birthday after sunning on the beach with stunning bikini-clad women

Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr transformed a pocket of Rio de Janeiro into his own theme park to celebrate his 25th birthday. The two-day attraction, dubbed Parque Baila Vini World, was reportedly organised by the winger for his enjoyment and that of an exclusive list of friends and family. Madrid colleagues Eduardo Camavinga and Reinier Jesus were among a guestlist that also included American rapper Travis Scott. The Houston native even graced the theme park-goers with a show. According to Spanish outlet Marca, guests also enjoyed personalised items in keeping with the park's theme. Cups, neon lights with the Brazilian star's silhouette and T-shirts with the 'Baila Jr' slogan were the notable collector's items. It appears that no expense was spared for the event that had several attractions to enjoy. A pendulum ride, called 'Samba', and a grasshopper with rotating arms were available for guests to get their adrenaline kick. Vinicius Jr headed back to his native Brazil for some downtime after Madrid's bruising semi-final defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup. While back in his homeland, the forward unveiled his own wax statue, a life-size replica that is set to be transferred to Madame Tussauds in New York. The Brazilian's time away from the European spotlight comes as speculation grows that he could depart football on the continent altogether, with contract talks with the Spanish giants at a standstill. AS report that all negotiations were put on hold after the initial approach which was made back in February. The figure wanted was transmitted by his agent Frederico Pena and since then it is understood that there has been no further contact. The Brazilian's current contract, which sees him earn somewhere in the region £330,187-a-week. After a stellar 2023-24 campaign that saw him finish second in the Ballon d'Or standings, the Brazilian was forced to adapt last year as Real welcomed the arrival of Kylian Mbappe. Vinicius ultimately ended the season with 11 league goals from 24 starts as Carlo Ancelotti was unable to leverage his latest blockbuster arrival into yet more domestic glory. Madrid are said to be at a crossroads with regards to a new deal, unwilling to offer him more than the over £500,000-a-week that Mbappe makes. Back in February, the winger made a statement on the situation: 'I hope the talks will be resolved in the coming days. It's very exciting to be able to open talks with Real Madrid about my renewal. 'I have a contract until I'm 27, but I've always said I want to play here for a long time, to make history, and to receive the affection of the fans alongside the president and the coaching staff. 'God willing, the negotiations will be resolved in the coming days, and I'll be able to stay here for much longer.' Throughout his glittering spell in Madrid the 25-year-old has been consistently linked with becoming the latest high-profile star to join the Saudi Pro League. Vinicius is said to have met with officials from the league, namely vice president Saad Al Lazeez, in Prague in 2023 as they attempted to sell him on the move. Talks between the two parties have reportedly continued ever since, with the gulf state prepared to offer him a five-year deal worth £830million to join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.
