Swedish man found guilty in killing of Jordanian fighter pilot in Syria
A Swedish man was found guilty of serious war crimes and terrorism on Thursday over his role in the murder of a Jordanian air force pilot who was burned to death in Syria a decade ago, the Stockholm district court said in a verdict.
The Swede, identified in court documents as Osama Krayem, was sentenced to life in prison for participating in the execution of Muath al-Kasasbeh, who was burned alive in a cage after being captured in Syria in December 2014.
Convictions for attacks in France and Belgium
Krayem, 32, has previously been convicted of involvement in attacks in Paris in 2015 and in Brussels in 2016, and was transferred to Sweden from France to stand trial in Stockholm.
Krayem has denied acting with intent. His Swedish lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Islamic State terrorist group, which once imposed a reign of terror over millions of people inSyria and Iraq, captured the Jordanian pilot and later released a video showing his execution.
While the evidence showed that the fire that killed al-Kasasbeh was lit by another man, Krayem was also involved in the killing, the court said.
"The District Court has found that the defendant, through his actions, contributed so actively to the death of the pilot that he should be considered a perpetrator," presiding Judge Anna Liljenberg Gullesjo said in a court statement.
Islamic State controlled swathes of Iraq and Syria between 2014 and 2017, before being defeated in its last bastions in Syria in 2019.
Under Swedish law, courts can try individuals for violations of international law committed abroad.

Brockton man sentenced in death of homeless man, another charged with beating victim's dog
A Brockton man found guilty of fatally stabbing a homeless man who was walking his service dog in the city in 2021 was sentenced Friday, Aug. 1, to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office. A jury found Keith Disharoom, 44, guilty Tuesday, July 29, of one count of first-degree murder in the July 2021 stabbing death of 44-year-old Eric Cohen, formerly of Holbrook, the DA's office said. Cohen was walking his service dog, Righteous, on North Main Street when the incident occured. Disharoom was sentenced Friday in Plymouth Superior Court to serve the mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. 'I hope that after today's sentencing the family of Eric Cohen can find some measure of peace and comfort knowing that justice has been served,' Plymouth County DA Timothy J. Cruz said. What happened to service dog Righteous? Another man, Mark Stroud, 29, is accused of beating Cohen's service dog, Righteous, with a baseball bat during the altercation. Stroud is currently awaiting trial on charges of first-degree murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and animal cruelty, according to the DA's office. Righteous, who survived the attack, attended Disharoom's initial arraignment in 2021 along with Cohen's family and close friends. Righteous was believed to be with Cohen for emotional reasons, Joanne Berryman, a longtime friend of Cohen's told The Enterprise during the 2021 arraignment. Man, 29, wanted in connection with death, arson in Bracebridge, police say
Police are searching for a man in connection with a death and arson that happened Friday night at a residence in Bracebridge. The man, 29, who is from Bracebridge, is wanted for murder, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. He is described as approximately 5'8" tall, with light brown hair and facial hair, police said. "He is not believed to pose an immediate threat to others or to public safety," police wrote in the post. A shelter-in-place was in effect for Bracebridge until 1:45 a.m. on Saturday. Officers responded to a report of gunfire at approximately 8 p.m. on Beatrice Town Line Road on Friday. When they arrived, they found a dead man and the residence was engulfed in flames, OPP said. Bracebridge OPP's crime unit is currently investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
