Ex-Liverpool star believes Reds' biggest title challenger won't be Arsenal or Man City

Former Liverpool winger Stewart Downing believes Chelsea is the biggest threat to the Reds' Premier League title defence this season. Arne Slot's team won the title at a canter last season, finishing 10 points ahead of runners-up Arsenal and 15 in front of Chelsea, who came fourth behind previous champions Manchester City. All three of Liverpool's main rivals have strengthened this summer, while Chelsea ended last season on a high by winning the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup. Enzo Maresca's team was also one of the early contenders for the title last season before tailing off around Christmas - and Downing fears they could push Liverpool all the way this time around. "They could finish second or they could finish outside the European places. You just never know what you're going to get with them. "They've definitely got the talent if Maresca can get them playing together in the right system, the right way of playing and then there's Cole Palmer who is a massive player for them." Chelsea won the last meeting between the two teams in a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge in May, albeit when Liverpool was already crowned champions. The Blues have added firepower to their attack this summer with the arrivals of Joao Pedro from Brighton, Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund and Liam Delap from Ipswich. But Maresca's team failed to truly challenge Liverpool with Arsenal the only team who came remotely close to denying the Reds a 20th domestic title, after Manchester City's dismal season by their own extremely high standards. Having finished as runners-up three seasons in a row, though, all eyes are now on Arsenal to go one step further, particularly after the £64million signing of striker Viktor Gyokeres. Now they have done that so go on, then! "Mikel Arteta has got his own team. He's got everything around him, including the striker, and there will be big pressure on Gyokeres too as a result but I think he's a decent signing. "Manchester City, they'll always challenge. Don't ever write Pep Guardiola off, even if he hadn't signed a player this summer, given how good he is as a coach, even if he got a bit of stick last season." Downing added: "City, Arsenal and Chelsea will all challenge but I still expect Liverpool to win it.'

Rennes hijack OGC Nice's Mahdi Camara deal

Mahdi Camara (27) had looked to be closing in on a move to OGC Nice, however, Stade Rennais have stepped in to hijack the deal, as per a report from . Nice have been looking to bring in midfield reinforcements, and they looked to have found that in Camara. As reported by RMC Sport, a deal between Le Gym and Stade Brestois was almost completed, whilst the player himself had already agreed a four-year deal with the Riviera club. The transfer looked just a matter of time, however, at the final hour, Rennes stepped in. The Breton club, in advanced talks with Brest, are now set to sign the SB29 midfielder for a fee of around €8m. Seduced by the club's project, despite their lack of European football this season, Camara is therefore now set to join Rennes, instead of Nice, whose participation in this season's UEFA Europa League was confirmed following defeat to SL Benfica on Tuesday. GB set up flag football quarter-final with Austria

Great Britain's women's flag football team will face Austria in the quarter-finals of the World Games after completing their group campaign on Friday. Britain followed up their opening win on Thursday by beating Japan 26-24 in the first of their two Friday matches, then losing 34-13 to defending champions Mexico. That meant Mexico topped Group B, so face the fourth-placed team in Group A - hosts China - while runners-up Britain face third-placed Austria. The tournament in Chengdu is seen as crucial for the GB team's development before flag football makes its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028. The World Games is a global multi-sport event showcasing sports not currently on the Olympic programme. GB qualified for the first time after securing seventh place at last year's Flag Football World Championships and are ranked fifth in the world, just behind Austria. Japan are ranked third and beat Britain 40-34 in the quarter-finals of the Worlds, but that defeat was avenged on Friday. GB held on for a narrow win, with quarterback Jessica Allen making four touchdown passes. The European champions led 20-12 at half-time after Grace Conway scored twice, either side of a Hannah Elliott touchdown. Marta Mathews scored to keep GB clear in the second half and although Japan also finished with four touchdowns, they failed to add the extra point on each occasion. GB twice went in front in their final group game, with Allen making touchdown passes to Elliott and Emily Kemp, but Mexico led 14-13 at half-time and finished with five touchdowns - all from Diana Flores passes. The winner of GB's quarter-final with Austria will face the USA or Italy in the semi-finals. The knockout and ranking games are played on Saturday and Sunday.
