Irrigation Minister reviews progress of smart water management project in cooperation with AECID
The review focused on the project component titled 'Identifying Opportunities for Developing Smart Irrigation Farms in Egypt.' As part of this effort, five pilot farms have been selected to implement smart irrigation technologies across the governorates of Qalyubeya, Dakahleya, Beheira, Alexandria, and Sohag. The National Water Research Center has prepared a study proposal for applying smart irrigation models at these selected sites.
Sewilam emphasized that the project aims to enhance the efficiency of water usage and overall management of water resources in agriculture, while simultaneously boosting productivity in the targeted regions, which span both the Nile Delta and Upper Egypt.
The initiative also seeks to localize smart irrigation technologies and modern agricultural practices, encouraging farmers to adopt innovative solutions that optimize water consumption, improve crop yields, and reinforce national food security.
He noted that the project promotes irrigation systems that are responsive to climatic and environmental conditions as well as the specific water needs of various crops. In addition, it supports Egypt's broader digital transformation efforts in irrigation management and monitoring, enabling farmers to select appropriate technologies based on the human and financial capacities of their local communities.
The Minister highlighted that the Ministry is pursuing a long-term strategy for sustainable water management, which includes exchanging expertise and learning from international best practices—particularly Spain's advanced experience in modern and smart irrigation systems.
The collaboration also aims to improve water planning and management processes, adopt integrated water resources management (IWRM) principles, increase irrigation efficiency, and promote the reuse of agricultural drainage water while preserving water quality.
Sewilam concluded the meeting by directing the continuation of project activities according to the established timeline and stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination between the Ministry and the Spanish side to ensure the project's successful implementation.

Sewilam discusses using satellites and modern tools to monitor water hyacinth
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam held a meeting with senior officials from the ministry to discuss the use of satellite technology and modern tools for monitoring and managing the spread of water hyacinth and aquatic weeds in the country's waterways. During the meeting, the team presented a new application developed on the Google Earth Engine platform, a cloud-based geospatial processing platform that enables the use of satellite imagery to create a variety of data-processing applications. The app allows high-speed, cost-effective and highly accurate monitoring of aquatic plants through satellite image analysis. The application automatically identifies watercourses using various spectral indices designed to extract water bodies from satellite images. Sewilam asserted the importance of leveraging modern technology to support the ministry's work and optimize the management of water resources. He noted that the ability to continuously monitor the spread of water hyacinth and other aquatic weeds through satellite-based tools would allow ministry officials to take swift and informed decisions to manage and remove these invasive species. The application also plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency by detecting any potential manipulation in work reports or discrepancies in the recorded volumes of removed vegetation during cleaning operations, he said.

Egypt's 'Atlas of Egyptian Cities' Geoportal has won the 2025 Special Achievement Award in GIS (SAG) granted by Esri, the California-based Environmental Systems Research Institute. GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. The Atlas of Sustainable Egyptian Cities, which was launched at the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) in November 2024 in Egypt, is a geoportal launched to guide cities in adapting to environmental risks and promoting sustainable urban planning. It is a collaborative effort highlighting Egypt's commitment to sustainable development, particularly in the face of climate change. The geoportal serves as a guide for cities to adapt to environmental risks and supports sustainability-conscious urban planning. It is intended to be a key tool for implementing national strategies such as 'Egypt Vision 2030' and the 'National Climate Change Strategy 2050'. The Atlas of [Sustainable] Egyptian Cities was created through a partnership among the Egyptian Ministry of Local Development, the World Bank, and Esri. The platform's database enables policymakers to assess the impacts of climate change, optimise service distribution, and plan projects more efficiently. Minister of Local Development Manal Awad received the 2025 SAG Award during the Esri International User Conference, held in San Diego, California. She was handed the award by Jack Dangermond, president and founder of Esri, the global leader in geographic information systems. On its Facebook page, Esri North Africa posted the news and mentioned that 'Location Intelligence plays a vital role in shaping the future of our planet, not only as an integral part in designing smarter cities, but also in driving digital transformation, and advancing sustainable development goals'.
