
The Surprising Key To Safety Compliance: Self-Compassion

Without safety policies, both life and livelihoods can hang in balance - along with the overall health of an organization. When it comes to safety, we often think of external measures – safety equipment, rules, regulations, and enforcement – as the primary drivers of compliance but in a paper published recently by myself and Dr. Hak Yoon Kim, we found that self-compassion can also act as a powerful internal resource that enhances safety compliance. In the workplace, how kind (or not critical) one is to themself is likely not the first place managers will jump to when thinking about how to improve safety processes at work. Yet, self-compassion restores self-regulatory resources, or more plainly: will power. And following rules - especially safety rules which don't always have an immediate payoff, is often an act that requires self-control .
In a crisis, whether it's a global pandemic or a company-wide restructuring, following safety protocols can be even more paramount as even the smallest misstep may have amplified consequences. The stress of crisis situations can create additional pressure that makes taking shortcuts appealing, which means enacting safety protocols can require even more will power. Based on theories that argue that self-control is a limited resource that depletes over time, the more stressful accompanying a situation, the less likely people are to follow safety rules because when we're depleted – by stress, long hours, or personal challenges – our self-control can weaken, making it harder to adhere to guidelines. To better understand what individuals can do to uphold safety protocols despite the situation they find themselves in, my colleague and I collected data during the COVID-19 pandemic and sought to explore the inner resources people could draw from to enhance safety compliance. We narrowed in our study to focus on one population that was particularly depleted: working parents. During COVID-19, a report by McKinsey & Co. wrote: 'employed parents face higher numbers of and longer exposure to stressors from the multiple roles they play compared with non-parents, and they have less ability to access periods of recovery as a result'.
In a sense, the pandemic offered ideal conditions to study safety compliance because as offices closed down and employees worked remotely, there was no supervising manager looking over one's shoulder to ensure safety protocols were upheld. This allowed us to examine the role of self-control with greater precision. Past research has found that healthy behaviours like sleep, exercise, and eating well can support self-control and so we wondered if a healthy relationship with oneself could also increase self-control and ultimately, safety compliance under the premise that being kind and understanding to oneself might provide the mental and emotional strength needed to follow safety protocols, even when stressed and overwhelmed.
We analyzed data from 387 participants (55% women and 92% White, with an average age of 43.04 years). In terms of relationship status, 69% were married or living with a partner, and 31% were single (68% women; 32% men). Regarding family structure, 37% of participants had one child, 44% had two children, 34% had at least one child under the age of 6, and 34% had at least one child aged 6 to 15. We found that self-control capacity explained the relationship between self-compassion and safety compliance and interestingly, this relationship was stronger for men than for women. In other words, self-compassion was an even more powerful resource for men, than women.
The study highlights the crucial link between self-compassion and self-control. Self-control, that inner ability to regulate our behaviour and stay on track, is a finite resource that gets worn down every time we do a task that is difficult, challenging, or that we have to do despite not really wanting to. This is where self-compassion comes in.
Replenishing self-control is simple, but not easy. A great night of sleep, for example, is one of the most effective ways to replenish your resources but sleep - especially for working parents - can be tricker to catch than an invisible leprechaun. Self-compassion allows people to replenish self-control reserves just by making the choice to stop beating themselves up and instead, offering themselves the same kindness and understanding they would offer a friend who is struggling. Instead of harsh self-criticism, self-compassion encourages a recognition that everyone hurts sometimes and that imperfection is part of the human experience.
Even though the pandemic has ended, many employees find themselves stressed, exhausted, and carrying out tasks they 'should' do, which leaves them in need of replenishing their willpower. In this context, self-compassion isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. Organizations that foster a culture of self-compassion can empower their employees to better navigate stress, maintain their well-being, and - perhaps boring but no less important - adhere to safety protocols.

Stoke City wouldn't be the worst venue to get home from though. That dubious honor goes to Yorkshire. This is based on research by soccer fan app Away End, which looked at whether it is possible to get home on public transport after the game. The research took every game in the 2024/25 league season for clubs in the English Football League (EFL) Championship, League One and League Two, and simulated return transport for traveling fans. It found that it was impossible for away fans to get home using public transport from Tuesday 7:45 p.m. matches in more than 85% of cases. For other midweek games, away fans couldn't get home 34% of the time, and unsurprisingly, fans from the northeast and southwest found it most difficult to travel to away games on public transport. These numbers are also a best-case scenario, not factoring in engineering works or leaves on the train line. Back in 2021, during the COP26 summit in Glasgow, the BBC published an article saying how fans could reduce their carbon footprint. It's number one recommendation: walk, cycle or use public transport to get to games. But this research shows how difficult that is for fans at midweek games, with most opting to drive or take a supporters' bus instead, or just not attend midweek away games at all. Freddie Daley from Cool Down – The Sport for Climate Action Network, which commissioned the research, said there is room here for train companies to solve this problem, saying 'if they just put the last train 45 minutes later, or in some cases 20 or 30 minutes later, fans would be able to get home.' He says this is something that rail operators, especially those going back under the government's ownership, could consider, adding that surveys by rail companies show that fans want to take the train to matches, and that Germany runs additional late-night trains for sporting events or concerts so it is something that's possible. James Medcalf, who runs the Away End app, said that on a per-mile basis, fans in Yorkshire had the biggest difficulties getting home, highlighting the disparities in the quality of public transport between the north and south of England. He said the reason why Tuesday was the worst is because Tuesdays often have a full fixture list involving every team, or are used for games that had been postponed from earlier in the season, whereas when the EFL chooses games for its Monday and Friday TV slots, these games are often local derbies which make for good TV. As such derbies naturally involve teams that are nearby, it just happens that these fans can get home relatively easily. The report recommends that the EFL and broadcasters should consider travel options and distances when choosing which games to show on TV. Medcalf says the EFL does try to consider fans when it schedules games, but 'the fact they have to pack a lot of games into a tight schedule means there's very limited impact the EFL can have on certain games being booked in on a Tuesday.' He highlights the difficulties in the first and last miles of the journey home for fans who aren't near a major train line or who are visiting grounds far from the train station, saying of a trip he took to Preston North End that 'getting away from Preston at the end of the game, which isn't that close to the town center and having to get on the last train to get back to London was quite 'squeaky bum time.'' He also mentions how running the last train half an hour or so later on matchdays would have a big impact but highlights that the cost or rail travel, especially last minute, makes it prohibitively expensive for many fans anyway. Daley points out that some clubs do try to help fans by offering discounted train tickets. But some things are out of clubs' hands. Plymouth Argyle is one of the clubs that has tried hardest to improve its green credentials recently, but due to its location in the southwest of England, it has been the club with the highest number of stranded fans. One time Plymouth actually sent its players to a match against Watford by train, but a cancellation meant that the trains were so crowded, the players had to sit on the floor. Fixing the situation isn't easy as there are so many stakeholders involved, but making it easier for fans to travel to away matches would not only help the environment but also improve fan experience and the atmosphere at the stadiums, making it a win-win for everyone involved.

The best leaders are spacious leaders. Here's what that means
It can be tough out there for leaders. It's challenging to drive results, ensure you're supporting employees' well-being, and maintain your own motivation as well. So how can you be a good leader, and what are the strategies that really work? A helpful concept is spacious leadership—a management approach in which you create space for others to participate, make choices, and be their best. With spacious leadership, you also ensure space for yourself to enhance your own effectiveness and satisfaction on the job. THE NEED FOR IMPROVED LEADERSHIP In spite of leaders who work hard to do their best, a new survey by consulting firm DDI finds that only about 40% of workers believe that leaders are high quality. In comparison, leaders tend to rate themselves better than others rate them. There's a perception gap—along with an opportunity for leaders to get better. There's also evidence that leaders are feeling the pressure. In fact, 71% of leaders say their stress levels have increased, 54% report they are worried about burnout, and 40% have given thought to leaving a leadership role because they struggle with their own well-being, according to the DDI data. A spacious leadership approach addresses how leaders support others, and also how they manage their own workplace experience. CREATE SPACE FOR INVOLVEMENT One of the first ways to demonstrate spacious leadership is to invite people to participate, get involved, and have a voice. At the root of this kind of leadership is humility. It doesn't mean giving up your voice. Spacious leaders have a strong point of view, and they're secure with their own expertise, but they don't assume they have all the answers or the best answers. Comfort with admitting mistakes is also related to spacious leadership. Leaders don't have to know it all—and people appreciate it when their managers ask for ideas and value input in finding solutions. Spacious leaders empower people to be part of the process by communicating effectively. When leaders offer clear direction, goals, or challenges, people are able to be proactive and suggest ways to get things done. And when people have the opportunity to get involved, they are also more likely to feel a sense of ownership and dedication to their work. Demonstrate spacious leadership by inviting people in and sharing context so they can be effective participants in the process. CREATE SPACE FOR LEARNING AND GROWTH People of all generations crave development. In spacious leadership, you create space for people to expand their skills and competencies. Investing in employees' growth sends a message that you value them and their contributions. You can support people by creating succession plans or recommending formal learning sessions, offering regular coaching and feedback, or introducing them to mentors outside your department. The outcomes of these approaches are striking. According to the DDI study, when leaders provided coaching and feedback to employees, those employees were nine times more likely to trust their leader. And when leaders actively supported development, employees were 11 times more likely to trust their leader. Demonstrate spacious leadership by coaching and developing people. CREATE SPACE FOR PERFORMANCE We all have an instinct to matter, and people will be happier and provide more discretionary effort when they are supported in performing at their best. When you're creating space for performance, you're giving people plenty of choice, control, and autonomy. Control and decision-making have been proven to matter for health and longevity. According to two Indiana University studies (one conducted in 2016 and the other in 2020), people who experienced high job stress and had limited control over their work process were less healthy and had higher mortality rates. On the other hand, when they were in high-stress jobs but had greater choice and more decision-making power, they were healthier and lived longer. People also perform best when they have enough time to get things done. Sometimes things are hectic, urgent, or last minute, but spacious leaders do their best to give people adequate time to deliver results. This allows people the space to reflect, plan, and invest in the quality of their outcomes. Demonstrate spacious leadership by giving people the necessary support to perform their best. CREATE SPACE FOR WELL-BEING Another way to create space for people is by attending to their well-being. Give people the opportunity to set and maintain appropriate boundaries in their work and life. In addition, tune into how people are doing and ask questions. You don't need to be a professional social worker, but when you can demonstrate empathy and point people to resources, it sends a strong message about how much you care. Create space for them to share, and then listen and offer support. Paying attention to well-being is good for people—and it pays off for organizations. In a global study by the Workforce Institute at UKG, a workplace software provider, 80% of people said they were energized at work when they had better mental health, and 63% said they were committed to their work. Some 69% of workers reported that their leader has a bigger impact on their mental health than their therapist or their doctor—and about the same impact as their partner. When organizations prioritize well-being, the DDI data finds, people are 12 times more likely to rate leadership quality as high. Demonstrate spacious leadership by ensuring people have the space to nurture their wellbeing. CREATE SPACE FOR SELF-CARE As a leader, your own strength is critical to how you can support others. Just as you create space for your team's excellence, do the same for yourself. Be consistent, present, and accessible, but also ensure you have time to get away and turn off. Also consider the self-care that works best for you. The popular narrative about self-care suggests that you should spend time alone, but you may choose to spend time with others who energize you. Many people think self-care must always involve saying no, but it can also include saying yes to activities that you feel passionate about. Most important is to make choices that are nourishing for you. Another way to ensure self-care is to create a small group of trusted colleagues. Leadership requires a balance of authenticity and transparency with appropriate professionalism. You'll want to establish trusting relationships with other leaders (or people outside your organization) with whom you can relax, share worries and concerns, or get advice. Demonstrate spacious leadership by giving yourself space to regroup, rejuvenate, and bring your best. THE LANGUAGE WE USE The way we think about things and how we talk to ourselves have a significant impact on the choices we make and how we behave. With spacious leadership, you'll focus on all the ways you can create space for others and for yourself, resulting in terrific success.
