Josh Taylor retires from boxing due to eye injury

Rhyl Journal22-07-2025
Taylor underwent eye surgery last year and has been advised by specialists that to continue could endanger his eyesight.
The 34-year-old will go down in history as one of Scotland's greatest boxers, having won and then unified the world light-welterweight titles.
Taylor said in a statement: 'As has been publicised before, I've had a recurring issue with my eye that unfortunately means I now have to call time on my career or risk losing my eyesight.
'While the fighter in me always wants to box on, I know I have to listen to the medical professionals and save me from myself.
'It is certainly not the way I wanted to bow out but I have to listen to the doctors and those around me.'
Taylor, from Prestonpans, turned professional one year after winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
He claimed the IBF version of the world light-welterweight title with a points win over Ivan Baranchyk in Glasgow in May 2019, and added the WBA 'super' title by beating Regis Prograis in his next bout.
Taylor went on to beat previously undefeated Jose Ramirez to become the undisputed champion in Las Vegas in May 2021.
Taylor suffered his first defeat to Teofimo Lopez in New York in June 2023 and was also beaten in a rematch by British rival Jack Catterall in his following bout.
After undergoing surgery, Taylor returned for a bout against Ekow Essuman in Glasgow in May this year, but suffered his third consecutive defeat.

Two Liverpool stars' Anfield reactions speak volumes ahead of £100m transfer exits

Liverpool duo Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott continue to be linked with the exit door and looked to have waved to the Anfield crowd on Monday night in what may have been their last game Liverpool pair Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott continue to be linked with the Anfield exit door - despite both impressing as the Premier League champions returned home in their pre-season double header against Athletic Bilbao. ‌ Arne Slot has spent heavily this summer, breaking the British-transfer record to land Florian Wirtz, but several members of his squad could still depart as they look to land regular game time and the actions on Monday night of the aforementioned duo have not gone unnoticed. ‌ Nunez's exit has long been expected and Liverpool's signing of Hugo Ekitike and their pursuit of Alexander Isak underlines their desire to change things in attack. The Uruguayan, who was once the club's record-signing, only scored seven times last term and is now heavily linked with a move to Saudi side Al-Hilal. ‌ Elliott meanwhile has seen his stock rise this summer after excelling at the U21 Euros with England, where he was named Player of the Tournament. But he struggled for starts last term, is likely to see even less game time this term following Wirtz's arrival, and is being eyed by the likes of Brighton and West Ham. Combined, Liverpool hope to land in excess of £100m for the pair. Both men were given excellent ovations by supporters when their names were read out, both pre-game and when they both got on the scoresheet. Elliott celebrated his goal by placing his hand over his heart and the Liverpool crest. Post-match the pair both appeared to wave goodbye to the Kop. Elliott, 22, admits he will have to be selfish with his future after potentially saying his goodbyes to the fans, both when the team celebrated and as he walked off the pitch. He said on his next move: 'If I had it my way, I would be here for the rest of my career, it's as simple as that. I love everything about the club. But at the same time, I kind of need to be selfish with myself and see what's best for me. "I have big ambitions, I want to get in the World Cup [squad], keep being successful as a player. ‌ 'I think it's still something I need to review, I need to have a talk with everyone and review the situation. Obviously we have many new players that have come in, so whether it blocks the path for me, I'm not sure. "It's something for me to decide and have a look at. As I said, just review the situation." ‌ Whilst Liverpool have spent well over £200m on new signings they have also seen some major names depart Anfield - with more possibly following. Trent Alexander-Arnold headed to Real Madrid when his contract expired and Luis Diaz completed his move to Bayern Munich last week. Tyler Morton is heading to Lyon for £15m and both Nunez and Elliott may not be far behind if acceptable offers are forthcoming. Ben Doak outshines £270m of new Liverpool talent with goal

Florian Wirtz's first look at Anfield gave fans a glimpse of why the club made him their – and with add-ons potentially a British – record signing with some clever touches and interplay and almost the opening goal. Liverpool showcased £270million-worth of new signings in the 3-2 friendly victory over Athletic Bilbao but the goals still went to established Premier League winners Mohamed Salah – who also missed a late penalty – and Cody Gakpo. Head coach Arne Slot believes the Germany international will replace the creativity they lost from the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid. 'I think there is always room for improvement in every department and we have added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons,' said the Dutchman. 'Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third and we have lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back. 'Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special – Flo has this quality in a totally different position. He brings that creativity.' Wirtz's fellow new signings also showed they were settling in well as Jeremie Frimpong linked up well with Salah, fellow full-back Milos Kerkez was solid and Hugo Ekitike showed flexibility across the forward line. Wirtz headed onto the crossbar before Ekitike crossed for Salah to fire home and Gakpo scored twice after the break after Oihan Sancet had levelled. Read more: Liverpool went into the double-header with just one recognised centre-back with Virgil van Dijk ill and Joe Gomez injured and looked vulnerable at set-pieces, with Maroan Sannadi heading an equaliser from a corner. 'The other games pre-season we have conceded a few too many chances but today we hardly conceded anything at all and that pleased me as well,' added Slot. 'So to concede two set-piece goals in the second game is not what you want, especially if you play Crystal Palace next week who are a team who are very strong on set-pieces. That's another thing to work on.' In both matches Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month, was remembered with fans standing and clapping and singing the forward's song. When the clock showed 20, action on the pitch also halted as players and officials joined in the applause. Liverpool's second string won 4-1 earlier, after an erroneous fire alarm had evacuated the Main Stand before kick-off, with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha continuing his impressive pre-season form with a goal after just 87 seconds. Ben Doak, three years his senior, also scored while there were goals for Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott, two players whose futures appear to be away from Anfield. Nunez, who has been linked with Al Hilal for a while with AC Milan also opening talks over the Uruguay international, thumped the badge on his shirt in front of the Kop while Elliott was the last to leave the pitch having blown kisses to all four sides of the ground.
