Odisha: Two Dalit men allegedly assaulted, tonsured after being accused of cow smuggling
Two Dalit men in Odisha's Ganjam district were allegedly assaulted and tonsured on Sunday by a group that accused them of cow smuggling, The Indian Express reported on Tuesday.
Six persons were detained in connection with the case on Monday, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Suvendu Kumar Patra told PTI.
The men, Babula Nayak (54) and Bulu Nayak (42), were transporting two cows and a calf in an auto when they were accosted by a group of 'cow-protectors' in Kharigumma village, the news agency quoted an unidentified police official as saying.
The group allegedly accused the men of smuggling cattle and demanded Rs 30,000 from them. When they refused, they were assaulted, forced to crawl, consume grass and drain water, the official added.
The group also took the mobile phones of the two men and Rs 700 cash, The Indian Express reported.
The police have filed a case based on a complaint by the men who were assaulted, Chandrika Swain, inspector at the Dharakote police station in Ganjam, told The Indian Express.

Ahmedabad, Jun 24 (PTI) The process of shifting the wreckage of the Air India plane, that crashed on June 12 on a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad, to the airport premises here was still on for the third day, officials said on Tuesday. The Gujarat police on Sunday started moving the wreckage on trucks from the crash site in Meghaninagar to GUJSAIL (Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Limited) building, which is in the airport premises. The ill-fated plane's tail fin, which got stuck on the medical college hostel premises, was shifted on a truck on Sunday. The wreckage will be in custody of the the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is investigating the plane crash, Joint Commissioner of Police, Sector 2, Jaipal Singh Rathore told PTI. "We began moving the wreckage of the Air India plane to the GUJSAIL building on June 22 and the work is still going on as the recent spell of rain has caused some interruption," said Rathore. The shifting work will be completed soon, he added. The debris was being moved on trucks from the crash site. The black box of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane and its cockpit voice recorder were recovered from the debris days after the crash. Apart from AAIB, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading a parallel international investigation into the plane crash. The London-bound plane with 242 persons on board crashed into the medical hostel complex in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, killing 270 persons, including 241 on board. One passenger survived. So far, 259 persons killed in the crash, including 241 on board the plane, have been identified through DNA matching and facial features, and 256 bodies handed over to their families, as per officials.

The case traces back to the arrest of Prasad, a former executive of the AIADMK's IT Wing, who was taken into custody following a violent altercation at a private bar in Nungambakkam last month. Prasad's phone, seized during the arrest, offered a trove of incriminating WhatsApp messages. Upon scrutiny, police arrested Pradeep Kumar, the man believed to have supplied drugs to Prasad. It was during Pradeep's interrogation that the name of actor Srikanth surfaced, setting off a new and sensational direction in the probe. According to the police, Srikanth, who was working on the film Theengarai, which is being produced by Prasad, confessed that drugs were used during the film's production. He claimed that it was Prasad who offered him the narcotics under the pretext that they were needed for the actor's performance. The police subsequently summoned Srikanth for questioning at the Nungambakkam police station and sent his blood samples for forensic testing. When the test results came back, confirming drug use, Srikanth was formally arrested and named the third accused in the case. He was produced before the 14th Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore, which remanded him to judicial custody until July 7. The court also ordered that he be kept in a first-class facility owing to his public profile and ongoing health issues reportedly concerning his child. Sources within the police department say Srikanth is believed to have purchased drugs over 40 times. Investigators have unearthed financial transactions amounting to Rs 4.72 lakh that were allegedly made by Srikanth to Pradeep through Google Pay, further strengthening the prosecution's claims of sustained involvement. Despite the serious charges, the actor reportedly told the court that he had not distributed the drugs to anyone and only used them personally. He appealed for bail, citing his child's illness and asserting that he would not abscond and would fully cooperate with the investigation. However, the magistrate declined to entertain the bail request and advised the actor to approach the special court that handles drug-related offenses. Srikanth's legal team filed a formal bail application earlier today. Meanwhile, police investigations are continuing in multiple directions. Officials have revealed that the drug supply chain may extend beyond Tamil Nadu, with links to a Nigerian national based in Bengaluru. The authorities are now probing whether more individuals from the film industry were involved. Prasad, the former AIADMK functionary at the center of the case, is also under scrutiny for several unrelated charges, including cheating and promising government jobs to unsuspecting citizens.
