Ahmedabad AI plane crash: Shifting of wreckage underway for 3rd day
Ahmedabad, Jun 24 (PTI) The process of shifting the wreckage of the Air India plane, that crashed on June 12 on a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad, to the airport premises here was still on for the third day, officials said on Tuesday.
The Gujarat police on Sunday started moving the wreckage on trucks from the crash site in Meghaninagar to GUJSAIL (Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Limited) building, which is in the airport premises.
The ill-fated plane's tail fin, which got stuck on the medical college hostel premises, was shifted on a truck on Sunday.
The wreckage will be in custody of the the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is investigating the plane crash, Joint Commissioner of Police, Sector 2, Jaipal Singh Rathore told PTI.
"We began moving the wreckage of the Air India plane to the GUJSAIL building on June 22 and the work is still going on as the recent spell of rain has caused some interruption," said Rathore.
The shifting work will be completed soon, he added.
The debris was being moved on trucks from the crash site.
The black box of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane and its cockpit voice recorder were recovered from the debris days after the crash.
Apart from AAIB, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading a parallel international investigation into the plane crash.
The London-bound plane with 242 persons on board crashed into the medical hostel complex in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, killing 270 persons, including 241 on board. One passenger survived.
So far, 259 persons killed in the crash, including 241 on board the plane, have been identified through DNA matching and facial features, and 256 bodies handed over to their families, as per officials.

Officials of the health department said all the bodies have now been recovered and so far, 253 bodies have been identified through DNA and six by facial recognition. Asked about media reports suggesting the black box is damaged and could be sent abroad for data extraction, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu called it "speculation". "The black box is very much in India, and it is currently being investigated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau or AAIB," he said. Air India has responded to the crash with a slew of safety and prevention measures that includes cutting down on the use of its wide-body planes for international flights by 15 per cent. The cuts will be implemented between now and 20 June and will continue thereafter until at least mid-July.

Even a minor blink in the altimeter prompts a pilot to seek engineering help, and the flight is grounded. PIL wants Air India's Boeing jets grounded until checks
A Public Interest Petition (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking urgent directions for suspension of operations of all Boeing aircraft operated by Air India until a safety audit is carried out. The plea has been moved in the wake of the recent crash of an Air India Boeing aircraft operating on the Ahmedabad-London route which killed 241 passengers and crew members onboard and 29 persons on the ground. The petitioner, Advocate Ajay Bansal , has urged the top court to ensure passenger safety and statutory compliance with respect to Air India's operations.
