Behind Birmingham Business School's Push For Responsible Business

Caroline Chapain believes in the ability of a business school to create world changers.
'If you don't believe you can change the world, you're never going to change it,' she says.
It's a lofty outlook. But it's also an ethos baked into the culture and curriculum at Birmingham Business School, where Chapain is an associate professor in the Department of Management. Over the past decade, the U.K.-based business school continually commits to training future business leaders with an emphasis on working towards a responsible future.
The push towards training responsible business leaders ignited in 2017 when Birmingham Business School became signatory to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Business Management (PRME). A year later, the school launched the Centre for Responsible Business, which is a collaboration between Lloyds Banking Group and Birmingham Business School. The purpose of the centre is to foster an environment for interdisciplinary research examining what it means to be a responsible business.
'Over the past ten years, we've really put our values to the heart of who we are and what we do as a business school,' Chapain says. 'And about four or five years ago, we redesigned our MBA program, putting responsible business at the heart of it.'
A STRONG CURRICULAR FOUNDATION OF RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS
The one-year MBA program starts with the core module, The Purposeful Leader. Of the nine core modules, it's the first students take, it's worth the most credits, and students dedicate the most time to it. Birmingham designed the course to explore students' leadership styles and career aspirations in relation to their core values. Students also take the core module Global Perspectives on Responsible Business that Chapain helps lead, which explores theories and practical ways to run a responsible business.
While the other modules are more typical business topics, like Managerial Finance, Marketing, and People Management and Organisations, Chapain says they all have elements of social inclusivity and wider responsible business practices. 'We are trying to cover and bring every discipline into their education while having them reflect on what type of MBA student, professional, and future practitioner do you want to be,' Chapain explains. 'What are your values? Who are you? What does all that mean in terms of equity, diversity, and inclusion? What does it mean in terms of the environment?'
GOING BEYOND DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Besides a curricular focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion and environmental and social responsibility, Birmingham takes responsible business training to another level through research, centers, and activities. Chapain started at Birmingham Business School two decades ago and has been a part of the school's evolution in responsible business from the get-go. 'I shifted my career to education and understanding how we can create an environment in business school which is more inclusive to the student, but also empower them to become the change agent in the future of their organization.'
A significant chunk of creating future responsible business leaders includes an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 2020, during the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement, Chapain says Birmingham made an effort to take its inclusivity and diversity emphasis to another level. Part of that included the development and growth of the Work Inclusivity Research Centre. Like the Centre for Responsible Business, the Work Inclusivity Research Centre is an interdisciplinary entity. Chapain represents the Department of Management at the Business School, promoting the development of scholarship and implementation of inclusive management education.
The research topics at the Work Inclusivity Research Centre and organized into five 'work streams.' Those are diversity and inclusivity within organizations; employment relations and regulating work; trust and workplace dialogue; work, well-being, and labour market inequalities; and teaching and learning, which Chapain leads.
DECOLONIZING BUSINESS EDUCATION AND BUSINESS SCHOOLS
A large part of Chapain's work includes what Birmingham calls decolonizing business education, as she is a co-lead of the BBS Decolonisation Project. The three-year project aims to identify how colonialism still exists in Birmingham Business School's academic structure and then dismantle it for a more inclusive, just, and equal business school.
While the term colonization can mean many different things to many different people, Birmingham Business School takes a contextual approach. It recognizes how colonization and the values upheld by colonization continue to exist in many Western business schools. Besides dismantling and restructuring colonization in its curriculum and research, the BBS Decolonisation Project hosts activities looking at ways of decolonizing Western business schools.
'As we develop the project, I think it really fits with our business school culture,' Chapain explains. 'I'm not saying it's always easy, but I think it really resonates with a lot of people, especially in the business school, where half of our staff are not from the U.K.'
BUSINESS EDUCATION WITH A SIDE OF NATURE
Of course, a large part of becoming a responsible business includes environmental aspects. 'What has been interesting for me is that there is some overlap between de-colonization and responsible business linked back to this idea of how we relate to the planet and nature, as well,' Chapain says. 'So we've been trying to bring students into nature, doing some nature-based learning.'
Chapain says the business school will take students to the Birmingham Botanical Garden so they can reflect on their relationships with nature. 'We ask them to do some meditation and contemplation,' Chapain explains. 'And it's really, really positive because it seems to resonate with them, and they're able to bring the experience back into the classroom.'
It's just one of many aspects currently setting Birmingham Business School apart from others.
'We take equity, diversity, and inclusion very seriously,' Chapain says. 'There are very few schools like us where you have a Decolonization Project. And we're not just looking at the curriculum. We're looking at research and operations. We've been quite advanced in our thinking and practice. We are living through our values.'
And, in turn, sticking to those values is creating responsibly- and globally-minded MBA graduates.
'We live in a global world and you have to interact with people from so many different places,' Chapain says. 'When you do business — even if you are a small business — being able to responsibly interact with others is a key skill that you actually need. And that's what we're training our students for.'

When elected to power, Labour promised to be the party of the builders, not the blockers, and committed itself to unleashing a housebuilding and infrastructure boom. Nearly a year into government, and the legislation that is supposed to make this happen, the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, is slowly wending its way through Parliament, having not yet been submitted to the House of Lords for scrutiny. The intention is to cut planning restrictions, but whether it also delivers in reducing the spiralling costs and interminable delays of development in the UK is anyone's guess. There are good reasons for scepticism. Meanwhile, the endless sorrow of HS2, the most expensive piece of infrastructure ever built in Britain, continues apace. According to a recent report in Rail magazine, which has not been denied, the London to Birmingham route is now likely to be pushed back a further six years, and may not be complete until 2039. Estimated costs have also further escalated to a jaw dropping £100bn, this despite the fact that the northern leg has been scrapped and that initially at least, the line will terminate not as planned at Euston but at Old Oak on the outskirts of London. Just to add a touch of the surreal to this towering example of ill-spent taxpayer pounds, the spanking new Birmingham terminal at Curzon Street is likely to be completed years before the line itself, and will therefore stand empty, its seven platforms gathering tumble weed in the long wait for their first passengers. In any case, the travails of HS2 have become a symbol of Britain's seemingly stultifying inability to get anything done. Somewhat misleadingly so, as it happens. The largest part of the problem with HS2 is not the planning constraints, or even the ruinous project management, but that it should never have been attempted in the first place, an admission disarmingly made by Peter Mandelson, now Britain's ambassador to Washington, more than 12 years ago. The previous Labour government only went ahead with the project, he admitted, because it was afraid of being upstaged by the Tories in creating a high-speed, north-south link. The economic case for it was always 'flimsy', he further conceded. Back then, it should be pointed out, the line was expected to cost 'only' £35bn before rolling stock, and include stage two branch lines to Manchester, Leeds and Wigan. The whole thing should have been axed there and then, but the Coalition government was terrified of the stick it would get from northern lobbies and voters for cancelling a project seen as totemic in any levelling up agenda. What's more, so much time, effort and money had by then already been expended that it was considered too big a write off to be politically palatable. So on it went, but the main explanation for its mounting costs was already obvious. Planning restrictions, constantly changing specifications, outlandish environmental demands such as the notorious £100m 'bat tunnel', were admittedly a part of it. Yet the contrast with HS1, which came in roughly on time and on budget, could scarcely have been greater. HS1, which links the channel tunnel and London, actually had a purpose and an economic rationale. Furthermore, it had a responsible minister, John Prescott, who after taunts from the French to the effect that the British couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery, was determined to grip the project and push it through. HS2 has never commanded a similar consensus or a convincing commercial justification, making it an ongoing object of bitterness, compromise and delay. Oppressive planning rules and environmental impact studies can no longer be used as an excuse; for HS2, these have all been put to bed, but still the costs keep rising. Shockingly, according to a report by the National Audit Office, simply cancelling the second phase of the project linking Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds is in itself likely to consume £100m. Why? Apparently it's to do with 'safely and efficiently' when closing down Phase 2 construction sites, insignificant though these are. Losses on land already compulsorily purchased but no longer needed further up the ante. And they wonder why the country is going bust. The Department for Transport, the authority responsible for overseeing and funding the project, might seem a particularly egregious example of Britain's inability to get anything done, but sadly these failings are not confined to the public sector. The other standout example is the privately funded Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset. It should have been up and running by now. Indeed, the one-time boss of the sponsoring company, EDF Energy, once ventured that by 2017 people would be cooking their Christmas lunches on power supplied by Hinkley. It scarcely needs restating that the latest target date for completion stretches out to 2031. In the meantime, costs have ballooned from an initial estimate of £18bn to £46bn in today's money. Once up and running, Hinkley will be one of the most expensive sources of electricity anywhere in the world. If it's any consolation, the UK is far from alone in the sclerosis that seemingly grips infrastructure development, gainful or otherwise. Like the UK, Germany used to be good at this kind of stuff, but became a laughing stock after Berlin's Brandenburg airport came in nine years behind schedule at a cost of more than three times the initial estimate. A McKinsey study of more than 500 global infrastructure projects found that only 5pc of them were completed within their original budget and schedule. The average project ran 37pc over budget and 53pc over schedule. Separate research by Oxford's Saïd Business School found that of more than 3000 infrastructure projects studied, only 0.2pc were completed on time and to budget. All the same, the situation appears to be notably worse in the UK than elsewhere. According to the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (Nista), the cost of construction in Britain has risen by nearly a third more than GDP per capita since 2007. That often asked question – why is it that we seem to be getting ever fewer bangs for our bucks in terms of public services and state-backed infrastructure – is partly answered by phenomena such as this. It's not just about population growth or the demands of an ageing society; it's also about incompetence, lack of clear objectives, and a cartel-like contracting industry that knows how to play the system to its own ends. At both national and local level, it's endemic and verging on the corrupt. As it embarks on the fantastically costly and disruptive decarbonisation of Britain's electricity network, the Government promises that it will be addressing these and many of the other issues that have been slowing things down and compounding their cost. Relatively straightforward improvements in project delivery systems alone could reduce final construction costs by between 10pc and 25pc, Nista says. Don't hold your breath. American Athletic Conference taking its postseason basketball tourneys to Birmingham and Tampa

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The American Athletic Conference is taking its postseason basketball tournaments to two new venues for the league after a five-year run in Texas. The AAC announced Friday that both men's and women's tournaments will be played next year at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. The Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, will host in 2027 and 2028. AAC athletic directors approved the venues and cities that will be first-time hosts for those league tournaments. All four finalists for the new sites were home cities of AAC members, with the other finalists being past host Memphis, Tennessee, and Wichita, Kansas. The basketball tournaments were held the past five seasons at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. That venue was also set to host the AAC men in 2020 before conference tournaments and the NCAA Tournament were canceled that year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 'We are thrilled to bring our basketball championships to Birmingham and Tampa,' AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti said. 'Our top priority when we began this bid process was to deliver the best possible experience for our student-athletes. One Way to Sell Beer in Britain? Buy Into a Soccer Team.

With a portrait of Queen Victoria watching over him, a 75-year-old man frowned at a pint of something unfamiliar. 'This isn't beer,' Michael Walker said, teasing. He was sitting in a 178-year-old pub called the Victoria (Katz) near Birmingham, England. The drink reminded him of a goat's milk yogurt that he said helped cure his debilitating arthritis. Sitting across from him, his son, Steve Walker, 52, and a friend, Mark Sykes, 60, laughed. It was, in fact, a pint of beer, a citrusy I.P.A. called Cowboy's Payday, that they had placed in front of him. The pair had chosen this particular ale because they support Walsall Football Club. The beer came from an American craft brewery, NoFo Brew Co, which is among the English soccer club's sponsors. The pub, run by a Walsall fan, has a permanent tap of Cowboy's Payday. Michael Walker, a card-carrying member of the Campaign for Real Ale, an appreciation society for enthusiasts of traditionally brewed British beer, kept grumbling as he drank the more modern offering before him. But after a while, his companions noticed that he had downed his glass before either of them. In 2022, when Bryan and Shannon Miles became investors in Walsall F.C., they saw an opportunity to expand their Georgia brewery, which then distributed only in the Southeastern United States. Now, on the strength of its connection to the team, NoFo has 150 accounts in central England and is expanding into Ireland. 'They're doing something very savvy to build that local connection with a craft brewery,' said Ruvani de Silva, a British freelance beer journalist. 'I'm surprised more breweries aren't doing it.' For years, British soccer fans and beer drinkers, often one and the same, have watched American money and methods infiltrate their favorite pastimes. With some exceptions, they've enjoyed it. In soccer that meant big teams (Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United) and small ones (Wrexham, most notably) have been funded by U.S. investors, some of them celebrities. The American influence on beer meant airy beer halls serving easy-drinking ales popped up amid traditional pubs with the warmer, yeasty brews. As the Mileses ventured into two very British realms, they arrived at a particularly friendly time. A Trojan Horse When Mr. Miles was a teenager in San Diego, the English Premier League team Aston Villa invited him to be part of its organization on what's called a schoolboy contract: He would attend school in England while training with a professional soccer organization in hopes of playing professionally. Mr. Miles's parents said no. So he played soccer in college, then got a job in corporate America. In 2010, he and his wife cashed out their retirement accounts to start a virtual staffing company, which eventually became worth more than $100 million. As their wealth grew, they wanted to diversify their assets. When a friend, Joe Garcia, approached them about opening a brewery, they went for it. Next, when another friend asked Mr. Miles if he'd be interested in joining a small investment firm, Trivela Group, to buy soccer clubs, the couple was in. Walsall Football Club, owned by Trivela Group, is in England's League 2, the fourth tier in English football, three below the Premier League. That made it more affordable than larger clubs. It also meant that with some improvements of the stadium grounds and other capital injections, Trivela was able to quickly build value. 'They will follow their heart and wallet with whoever's sponsoring their club,' Mr. Miles said of the team's fans. 'And so it just seemed to me that if we could embed the NoFo brand in that, it would be kind of like a Trojan horse.' In 2023, NoFo became the sponsor on the front of the team's warm-up jerseys. There was already a pub at the 11,000-seat stadium, which had been shut down for decades. Rehabilitating it had been a condition of the purchase of the team. In December 2023, NoFo reached an agreement with an English brewery to produce its beer, rather than shipping it from the United States. That has lately turned out to be a sound decision. It means the uncertainty of the global tariff system won't affect it. Nick Burton, the company's dedicated sales representative, said American beer was considered 'more exotic, more interesting' than other offerings. 'I don't want to get myself out of a job here, but it's not that hard selling it,' Mr. Burton said. In 2024, NoFo produced 2,235 barrels of beer in the United States and Britain. Having begun selling in Ireland as well this year, they expect that number to increase to 3,630. Most U.S. brewers produce fewer than 1,000 barrels per year, according to statistics compiled by the Treasury Department. But it is a top-heavy industry. The largest producers make millions of barrels of beer each year. Craft beer became popular in Britain two decades ago, boosted by a tax benefit given to small breweries in 2002. Aspiring brewers visited the United States to learn more about the process, according to Matthew Curtis, a co-founder of Pellicle, an online magazine about drinking culture. He said breweries were shipping hops from the States so they could have the same ingredients found across the Atlantic Ocean. And although the number of breweries in Britain peaked in 2019, then steadily declined, the country had developed a taste for that kind of beer. NoFo debuted at the Locker, the revitalized stadium pub, in April 2024, and in March of this year, NoFo began selling its beer in Ireland at the stadium for Drogheda United, the Irish team that the Trivela Group bought. The Trivela Group also owns an 80 percent stake in a Danish team, Silkeborg I.F., and founded a soccer team in Togo, Trivela F.C. The Mileses said getting distribution in Ireland had been more difficult than it had been in England. But the experience has them thinking even more internationally. Mrs. Miles said they were considering expanding into other countries in Europe. The Ryan Reynolds Model English soccer fans are accustomed to American investment in their teams. Fans of the Premier League team Manchester United, for example, were famously not delighted by their American owners, the Glazer family. One of the most successful examples of American investment in a small soccer team is Wrexham A.F.C., a team in Wales that the actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny bought. (The basketball player LeBron James is part of an ownership group that controls the Liverpool Football Club.) Their involvement and the money they have spent on the team have made Wrexham a tourist destination, attracted a global fan base and, most important, led to the club's playing well enough to be promoted to a better league in three consecutive seasons. A fourth promotion would land it in the English Premier League. 'You go to Wrexham, and if you went there five years ago, the kids on the streets would be wearing a Manchester United or Chelsea or a Liverpool shirt,' Mr. Curtis said. 'Now you go and everyone is wearing a Wrexham shirt. It wouldn't surprise me if they managed to do the same with Walsall. People are pretty cool with their club having money.' (Mr. Curtis is a fan of Lincoln City, which has American investors. Landon Donovan, a former U.S. national team player, is a strategic adviser for the team.) And Walsall jerseys did become a lot more common around town this season as Walsall F.C. got off to a promising start. By January, it was in first place in League 2 by a wide margin and expected to be promoted to League 1. (The top three teams are automatically promoted while the fourth through seventh place teams enter a playoff for the fourth promotion.) Trivela opted not to sign flashy and expensive players, planning to expand the team's business first. And then the team's fortunes turned, and the standings got tighter. On April 5, Walsall faced Port Vale, a team that was threatening Walsall's standing atop the league. The winner would leave the day in first place. The Victoria (Katz) opened at 10 a.m. so fans could drink before going to the stadium about two miles away. In England, drinking alcohol on the grounds is illegal during a match, so attendees drink their fill in advance, at halftime and afterward. The Locker buzzed before the game, with every seat filled and a line to get drinks. Groups made up mostly of men gathered around high-top tables or picnic benches, their voices echoing in the cavernous space. 'It's a family affair for us,' said Dale Birkett, 51, who was there with his father and his 22-year-old son, Joe. 'My dad, he used to take me in the mid- to late '80s.' 'We just really want to get out of this league, don't we?' Joe said. 'We've been in this for far too long.' Joe and Dale Birkett were both drinking Cowboy's Payday, saying it was less boring than going for beer they could get just anywhere. But the eldest Birkett, Dale's father, refused. Walsall scored early, but lost. The Port Vale fans sang taunts. After the game, Walsall's supporters returned to the Locker, but they shuffled in this time, glumly. Matters didn't improve. By the end of the day, the team had fallen to fourth place; it would end the season without being promoted to the higher league. Still, after the loss to Port Vale, fans kept their post-match plans at the Victoria (Katz). Beer was the move after a win, and the move after a loss. 'There's a few Walsall fans in here,' the bar's owner, Jason Paddock, said. 'They've come to commiserate.'
