Tourists from over 70 countries can now visit China without a visa

New York Post08-07-2025
Foreign tourists are trickling back to China after the country loosened its visa policy to unprecedented levels.
Citizens from 74 countries can now enter China for up to 30 days without a visa, a big jump from previous regulations.
The government has been steadily expanding visa-free entry in a bid to boost tourism, the economy, and its soft power.

More than 20 million foreign visitors entered without a visa in 2024 — almost one-third of the total and more than double from the previous year, according to the National Immigration Administration.
Who can enter China without a visa?
Citizens of more than 70 countries can enter China visa-free for 30 days.
'This really helps people to travel because it is such a hassle to apply for a visa and go through the process,' Georgi Shavadze, a Georgian living in Austria, said on a recent visit to the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.

While most tourist sites are still packed with far more domestic tourists than foreigners, travel companies and tour guides are now bracing for a bigger influx in anticipation of summer holiday goers coming to China.
'I'm practically overwhelmed with tours and struggling to keep up,' says Gao Jun, a veteran English-speaking tour guide with over 20 years of experience.
To meet growing demand, he launched a new business to train anyone interested in becoming an English-speaking tour guide. 'I just can't handle them all on my own,' he said.

After lifting tough COVID-19 restrictions, China reopened its borders to tourists in early 2023, but only 13.8 million people visited that year, less than half the 31.9 million in 2019, the last year before the pandemic.
30 days for many in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Mideast
In December 2023, China announced visa-free entry for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia.
Almost all of Europe has been added since then.

Travelers from five Latin American countries and Uzbekistan became eligible last month, followed by four in the Middle East.
The total will grow to 75 on July 16 with the addition of Azerbaijan.
About two-thirds of the countries have been granted visa-free entry on a one-year trial basis.
For Norwegian traveler Øystein Sporsheim, this means his family would no longer need to make two round-trip visits to the Chinese embassy in Oslo to apply for a tourist visa, a time-consuming and costly process with two children in tow. 'They don't very often open, so it was much harder,' he said.
'The new visa policies are 100% beneficial to us,' said Jenny Zhao, a managing director of WildChina, which specializes in boutique and luxury routes for international travelers. She said business is up 50% compared with before the pandemic.
While the U.S. remains their largest source market, accounting for around 30% of their current business, European travelers now make up 15–20% of their clients, a sharp increase from less than 5% before 2019, according to Zhao. 'We're quite optimistic,' Zhao said, 'we hope these benefits will continue.'

Trip.com Group, a Shanghai-based online travel agency, said the visa-free policy has significantly boosted tourism.
Air, hotel, and other bookings on their website for travel to China doubled in the first three months of this year compared with the same period last year, with 75% of the visitors from visa-free regions.
No major African country is eligible for visa-free entry, despite the continent's relatively close ties with China.

North Americans and some others in transit can enter for 10 days
Those from 10 countries not in the visa-free scheme have another option: entering China for up to 10 days if they depart for a different country than the one they came from.
The policy is limited to 60 ports of entry, according to the country's National Immigration Administration.
The transit policy applies to 55 countries, but most are also on the 30-day visa-free entry list.

It does offer a more restrictive option for citizens of the 10 countries that aren't: the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Sweden, Russia, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Indonesia, Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

Aside from the U.K., Sweden is the only other high-income European country that didn't make the 30-day list. Ties with China have frayed since the ruling Chinese Communist Party sentenced a Swedish book seller, Gui Minhai, to prison for 10 years in 2020.
Gui disappeared in 2015 from his seaside home in Thailand but turned up months later in police custody in mainland China.

Egypt sets opening of $1 bn Pyramids museum for Nov 1

Egypt said on Wednesday that its much-anticipated new $1-billion archaeological museum near the Pyramids of Giza will officially open on November 1 after several delays. Authorities hope that the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which boasts the treasures of Tutankhamun among its collection of more than 100,000 ancient Egyptian artefacts, will attract visitors from around the world. Official say that at 50 hectares (124 acres), the museum will be the largest in the world dedicated to a single civilisation. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly told a cabinet meeting that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had approved the new opening date. He said the opening would "an exceptional event" that would showcase Egypt's cultural heritage and attract visitors from around the world. It had been set for July 3 but was postponed when Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13 sparking a 12-day war that closed airspace across much of the Middle East. The project has faced a series of setbacks, including political unrest and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Authorities anticipate that the museum will draw five million visitors per year in a major boost to the tourism industry, which is a key foreign exchange earner for Egypt. maf/kir

Missing American journalist found alive in Norwegian park

Aug. 6 (UPI) -- An American climate journalist has been found alive and in good health after going missing in a Norwegian park last week. Alec Luhn, a reporter who has worked for the New York Times and the Atlantic and was a Russia correspondent for the Guardian from 2013 to 2017, was reported missing on Monday after he failed to catch a flight from Bergen to the U.K. Luhn was found near Folgefonna National Park by a helicopter and has been taken for medical treatment, the Norwegian Red Cross wrote on X Wednesday. "We are very, very happy! Many thanks to everyone in Norway who has helped to find him," Luhn's wife Veronika Silchenko told local news outlet VG by phone after he was found. The search operation for Luhn began on Monday and was expanded by Tuesday. Ingeborg Thorsland, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Red Cross, earlier told CNN that the operation spanned a large area and that heavy rainfall had made navigation difficult. Luhn had been on vacation with his sister in Norway, then began a four-day hike alone from the outdoor center of Ullensvang, on the northern edge of the park, a 212-square-mile wilderness in western Norway that's home to one of the country's biggest glaciers. Drew Gaddis, Luhn's sister, confirmed in a social media post that he had been found "in overall good health" and was being taken to Bergen by helicopter. Norwegian media reported that he had injured his leg. She thanked the Norwegian police, the staff and volunteers and the thousands of people who had helped share news of the search. "We can breathe again!" she said. Luhn is fit and equipped for the treacherous hike. Folgefonna, the third largest icecap in Norway, is on a peninsula famed for its fjords, mountains, rivers, lakes and icefalls. Parts are desolate and can be dangerous in bad weather. Wisconsin journalist Alec Luhn found after going missing on Norwegian solo hike

University of Wisconsin-Madison alum and journalist Alec Luhn, who went missing while hiking in a Norwegian national park, has been found alive, Luhn's wife, Veronika Silchenko, told CBS News. 'I think it's a miracle. I'm so grateful to all the people who were involved in the rescue,' said Silchenko, who told Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang she is traveling to Norway on Aug. 7 to see him. 'It's the best day of my life.' Luhn, who hails from Stoughton, was found by a rescue helicopter just north of a glacier called Nedre Buarbreen at about 11:30 a.m. Norwegian time (4:30 a.m. central time in the United States) on rocky terrain, wearing a red jacket and waving for help. A rescuer and a doctor were sent down to retrieve him. 'He has been found, conscious, and taken by helicopter to the Haukeland hospital. We are very happy,' Hardanger police chief Øystein Torsnes said after the rescue. Response leader Svein Buer said Luhn was found with some injuries to his legs and feet, and police described him as seriously, but not critically injured. He was transported to Haukeland Hospital. Luhn's brother, Brian, posted on Facebook that Luhn had a broken femur. The rescue was the first sign of life for Luhn since July 31, when he left for the solo hike in southwestern Norway. Silchenko said she wasn't worried about not having contact with Luhn, but when he missed his return flight to the U.K., she alerted authorities. Since then, over 50 people across various organizations — including the Red Cross, local police and an alpine rescue group — began the extensive search efforts.
