Pictured: Stalker, 71, with 'erotomania' who turned up at Unforgivable star Anna Friel's home and sent her unwanted gifts
Phil Appleton, 71, who is believed to have the paranoid condition that causes someone to have delusions another person is infatuated with them, is due to be sentenced next month.
He admitted stalking the Unforgiveable star, who first shot to fame by being part of the first on-screen lesbian kiss on Channel 4 's Brookside, for almost three years.
Appleton describes himself as an actor, retired pilot, mental health coach and writer in posts on social media.
He also reposted a tweet which included pictures of Ms Friel. It said: 'Simply stunning. Just beautiful as always.
'Hope you are keeping safe. Love these photos.'
In a separate post on X last year, he wrote: 'I was 70 on August 7, 2024. I'm a pilot, father, actor, coach and writer.
'In my opinion, after 43 years, psychiatric diagnoses are the greatest barrier to recovery from mental conflicts.
Social media posts by Phil Appleton include a repost of a tweet about Ms Friel and claims he is a pilot and actor
'Gender differences are the root cause of mental health conditions, good and bad.'
He also appears to advertise his services as a mental health coach and a bilingual actor, who speaks both French and English, on a personal website.
A court previously heard that Appleton had pursued a course of conduct 'which had a substantial adverse effect' on Ms Friel's everyday activities.
He sent her unwanted emails, attended her home address and left gifts.
A previous hearing at Reading Crown Court heard that Friel was concerned she might see the defendant at a 'health club' they both attended.
The court was told on Thursday that a psychiatrist had diagnosed Appleton with bipolar affective disorder and also believes he has a further diagnosis of 'erotomania'.
'Mr Appleton will require close monitoring by mental health professionals', Judge Alan Blake said the psychiatrist had concluded, adding 'he has not confirmed that Mr Appleton's fixation with the complainant in this case will necessarily resolve.'
Friel currently stars in the BBC drama Unforgivable, a harrowing story about a family who deal with the devastating aftermath of an act of sexual abuse committed by a member of their own family.
On the first day of what would have been Appleton's trial on Monday last week, the court heard Friel was unable to attend because of commitments she had in relation to the production.
Jai Patel, prosecuting, also said Friel and her daughter had asked for permission to attend the trial and give evidence by video link because of 'genuine fear and distress'.
Appleton, of Windsor in Berkshire, pleaded guilty to stalking without serious alarm or distress earlier this week.
He was due to be sentenced on Thursday, but judge Alan Blake adjourned the hearing until September 18 for a pre-sentence report to be carried out, pointing out that the psychiatrist was 'not entirely sure if his feeling towards the complainant will subside'.
The defendant, who the court heard has been in custody for six months and has spent time in a mental health facility, was granted conditional bail.
At yesterday's hearing, James Bloomer KC, defending Appleton, said: 'We are dealing with a man aged 71 years who had a 25-year period of stability.
'He reaches 70 or thereabouts without a single interaction with the criminal justice system, despite his bipolar disorder.'
'Not to underestimate what has been pleaded guilty to here', Mr Bloomer added, 'this is a man whose level of need for the public to be protected from him is easy to overplay.'
Mr Bloomer said the defendant had been on bail conditions, including not to contact Friel, in 2023 for a number of months without breaching them and would accept a lifelong restraining order.
The lawyer said Appleton was 'absolutely determined' to do rehabilitative work and said he had learned from being in prison for the first time.
'He tells me that teaches him if nothing else does', Mr Bloomer said.
He added he had felt Appleton had a 'lack of full understanding and acknowledgement of the impact of his behaviour on the victim.'
'It is more likely consistent treatment will help him to contain his feeling and reduce the risk of stalking', Judge Blake said.
'It is plain that on a number of occasions, Mr Appleton has indicated that he does not think he is unwell or needs to take his medication and has desisted in so doing.'
Judge Blake agreed to bail Appleton, but declined to allow to him to stay at an address in France, instead ordering him to stay at his mother's address in Haverhill, Suffolk.
Appleton was ordered not to contact Friel or her daughter and must not enter the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, which will be enforced by an electronic monitoring tag.
The case was adjourned for Appleton, of Springfield Road, Windsor, to be sentenced for one count of stalking without fear, alarm or distress between January 1, 2022, to December 11 last year at the same court on September 18.

Scout group ‘racially abused' after being mistaken for migrants
A group of teenage Scouts were allegedly abused online with 'offensive and racist' language, after being mistaken for a group of illegal immigrants by Welsh locals. The group had been camping at the CRAI Scout Activity Park in Newbridge when a video began to circulate online on Facebook falsely claiming that Gwent police were guarding the site. The video, which showed the group of over 30 youngsters being collected by coach, has since been deleted. Police confirmed they were investigating the comments made on the video for racism offences. Temporary chief superintendent Jason White said the force wanted to correct 'mistruths' circulating on social media and were making inquiries about posts containing 'inappropriate and offensive language'. 'The group featured in the video were visiting from another part of the country to attend a frequently used Scout camp in Newbridge and many of the people in the video are children,' he said. 'The site is not used to house anyone on a permanent basis. The site is used by our dog handlers to train our police dogs when not used for visits and our officers are not guarding the location. 'So, with that in mind, we're asking everyone to consider the tone and sentiment of their language but also for people to think twice about what they might read online and look for trusted voices within our communities.' ScoutsCymru described the venue as 'an inclusive and welcoming campsite and activity centre' with a range of activities for youth and community groups. 'We are aware of a racially aggravated incident targeting under-18s who were leaving after visiting our activity centre and are working closely with the South Wales police to address this situation,' a spokesman said. They added: 'We are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone on site and will continue to take immediate and robust action against any behaviour that threatens this.' The CRAI Scout Activity Park is a campsite and activity centre near Caerphilly in the South Wales valleys. On their website, it states they offer camping, hammocking and indoor accommodation, as well as providing a conference room, kitchen, dormitories and toilet with shower.

Teacher abused boys at Nicky Campbell's old school over 27 years
A former PE teacher at Nicky Campbell's old school abused more than a dozen of his pupils, a court has found. John Young, 91, used corporal punishment and behaved indecently towards some of his students at Edinburgh Academy between 1966 and 1993. The teacher would hit pupils with a cricket bat and mocked the bodies of those he deemed to be bad at sport, Edinburgh sheriff court heard. Young was due to face 54 charges including indecent assault, lewd and libidinous behaviour, breaching the peace and cruel and unnatural treatment. But a court ruled that the former international rugby referee was unfit to stand trial or appear in court. Claims of abuse were made against 20 members of teaching staff at the school, spanning 1954 to 1995. Campbell, a BBC presenter, is among former pupils who have spoken about the abuse they faced during their time there. In March 2024, the broadcaster was brought to tears after a court found that a different teacher at the school had abused him and several others over a 20-year period. Sheriff Ian Nicol ruled it was beyond reasonable doubt that Young had carried out 26 of the charges brought against him, but decided that no further action would be taken because of his health. Victims expressed disappointment The sheriff said that placing Young on the sex offenders' register at this stage would serve no practical purpose. Young was acquitted on the remaining 28 allegations. Two victims expressed disappointment that it was not a full conviction, and their belief that 'hundreds' of pupils may have been attacked. One said: 'I find it unfair that I had to endure brutal cross-examinations while the person involved gets to sit at home. Ultimately, we secured the best possible outcome.' Young, who was the only PE teacher at the school, was found to have intentionally exploited his power to 'violate and humiliate' the boys, Fiona Kirkby, of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said. During the hearing, evidence was heard from 24 former pupils and a further three witnesses. Victims detailed how Young would use violence to punish them for perceived bad behaviour. Threw basketball at boy's head This included throwing a basketball at a boy's head, slapping another across the head with a clipboard and using a cricket bat to hit several boys across the buttocks, the court heard. The former pupils also described a pattern of Young picking on those who were not good at sport by either physically hitting them for poor performance or mocking their bodies in the changing room. Young was a strict teacher who enforced the school rules, the court heard. One of the rules was that underwear should not be worn under gym shorts. The PE teacher would line students up and ask them to hold the waistband of their shorts out so he could check they were naked underneath. Victims said they continued to be traumatised and struggled to trust figures of authority because of the abuse they suffered. Ms Kirkby said: 'John Young systematically abused young boys over 27 years, while holding a significant position of trust as their teacher at the Edinburgh Academy.' Barry Welsh, the rector of Edinburgh Academy, said: 'Our commitment to facing up to the wrongs of the past remains unwavering. Many former pupils have shown remarkable bravery by giving evidence over several years, and we would like to reiterate our apology to all those affected by any abuse that occurred at our school.'
