Golden State Valkyries' new mascot has landed: Meet Violet the raven

USA Today12-08-2025
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's ... Violet the raven.
The Golden State Valkyries unveiled (or should we say unhatched) their new mascot on Birdwatchers Night at Chase Center during Monday night's game against the Connecticut Sun. Violet confidently strutted onto the court in front of a sold-out crowd at halftime to "Best Friend" by Bay-area artist Saweetie.
Violet donned a white and black cheerleader outfit that featured the Valkyries' logo on the front and her name on the back as she executed a perfect cartwheel to much applause. Violet's outfit was complete with a pair of yellow glasses, striped socks and a pair of white sneakers.
"heyyyyy besties," Violet wrote on her new social media account.

WHAT IS A VALKYRIE? Everything to know about Golden State Valkyries WNBA expansion team
Violet just so happens to be named after the team's official color, Valkyrie Violet, which "symbolizes power, ambition, nobility, and women's empowerment, much like purple has been used symbolically in modern history," the team previously announced.
'Something's hatching'
Golden State hinted at Violet's arrival and dropped Easter Eggs leading up to Monday's announcement on Birdwatchers Night. A mysterious violet egg was first spotted outside of the Chase Center on Aug. 7 and a wildlife expert hired by the team predicted there's a "bird species" inside. Violet feathers also turned up near the egg.
"I got called by the Valkyries to come and take a look at this big egg that showed up on campus. It's a violet color which we don't usually see and it's got very bright gold speckles on it," wildlife management expert Kenny Elvin said in a video shared on social media. "It's far larger than anything else that I've seen before. ...
"There are violet feathers. I don't know any birds that are quite that color. We'll see as it evolves. This egg could hatch very soon."
Something's hatching. Better keep your eyes open. 🪺🔭👀 https://t.co/oomypTbzKS
Elvin was on to something. The Valkyries brought the egg inside Chase Center for closer inspection and even built a nest for the egg to feel at home. Each fan in attendance for the Valkyries' matchup against the Connecticut Sun even received a pair of Valkyries Binoculars to spot the egg's hatching.
Leading up to tipoff on Monday, the Valkyries released a video showing the mysterious violet feathers all over Chase Center as forward Monique Billings warmed up, another clue hinting at Violet's color and origin.
Violet is sure to have a cult following. The Valkyries, the league's first expansion team since 2008, have sold out every game at Chase Center this season.

Indiana high school football predictions: Picking 2025 state champions as IHSAA season begins

OK, time for predictions. I reserve the right to revisit these picks around midseason (or after), or just fully forget this endeavor entirely. It is worth pointing out, I did hit on a few last year. I correctly picked the finalists and result in Class 5A (Decatur Central over Warsaw) and picked the winners in Class 4A (New Palestine) and Class 3A (Heritage Hills). I picked Westfield (6A) and North Judson (A) to reach the finals and they both did. Not bad. So, here goes nothing. Here are all of the predicted sectional, regional, semistate and state championship winners in the six classes: IHSAA football preview: What you need to know for 2025 season IndyStar preseason Super Team: Meet Central Indiana's top 47 players Sectional champions These are seven of the eight picks I had last year. The one I missed, Brownsburg, ended up winning the state championship (I had Ben Davis). The only other one I missed was Fishers over Hamilton Southeastern. I think we will see a Westfield-Crown Point semistate for the third consecutive year. I will take Westfield to advance again. In the south, I will take Brownsburg to beat Lawrence North and Center Grove over Warren Central. ∎ Championship game: It's hard to win back-to-back in 6A. I'll take Center Grove in a classic over Brownsburg. Indy-area Class 6A preview: Predictions, top players, what coaches said about their teams Sectional champions These were all of picks from a year ago with the notable of exception of Decatur Central, which is in 6A. Taking the Hawks' place is last year's 4A state champion, New Palestine. In the regional matchups, I will take Merrillville over Valpo and Lafayette Jeff over Warsaw. In the south regional games, New Palestine over East Central and Bloomington South over Castle. In the semistate games, Lafayette Jeff beats Merrillville and New Pal over Bloomington South. ∎ Championship game: New Palestine over Lafayette Jeff. Indy-area Class 5A preview: Predictions, top players, what coaches said about their teams Sectional champions I'll take Mishawaka over New Prairie in a rematch of last year (a 21-7 Mishawaka win) and East Noble over Culver Academy. I'll take Mishawaka to avenge last year's 18-13 semistate loss to East Noble. In the south, I'll take Bishop Chatard over Greenfield-Central and Evansville Reitz over Martinsville. ∎ Championship game: Bishop Chatard over Mishawaka. Indy-area Class 4A preview: Predictions, top players, what coaches said about their teams Sectional champions I'll take Knox over West Noble and Maconaquah over Bishop Luers in the north regional games and Maconaquah to advance to the state finals. In the south, give me Cascade over Lawrenceburg in one regional and Gibson Southern over Scottsburg in the other. I'll take Gibson Southern to win the semistate. ∎ Championship game: Gibson Southern over Maconaquah. Indy-area Class 3A preview: Predictions, top players, what coaches said about their teams Sectional champions Give me Andrean over Lafayette Central Catholic in one north regional and Adams Central over Rochester. I'll take Andrean to advance to the state finals. In the south, Lutheran over Lapel in one regional and Linton-Stockton over Brownstown Central in the other. I'll take Lutheran to advance to Thanksgiving weekend. ∎ Championship game: Andrean over Lutheran. Indy-area Class 2A preview: Predictions, top players, what coaches said about teams Sectional champions I'll take North Judson and South Adams in the north regional games and South Putnam and North Decatur in the south. Give me South Adams and North Decatur to advance to the state finals. ∎ Championship game: South Adams over North Decatur.

Taylor Swift Fans Spotted These Major Easter Eggs in 'New Heights' Teaser

Taylor Swift Fans Spotted These Major Easter Eggs in 'New Heights' Teaser originally appeared on Parade. Taylor Swift's latest Easter egg hunt has officially begun—and of course, Swifties are already on it. On Monday, August 11, the New Heights podcast confirmed what fans had been speculating all day: the 35-year-old Eras Tour icon is the special guest on Wednesday's episode. 'Taylor's about to do a f*cking podcast!' read the Instagram caption, alongside a teaser clip of the singer sitting next to boyfriend Travis Kelce in the recording studio. At one point, Swift says to him, 'Such a nice color on you,' with Kelce, 35, replying, 'Yes, I know. It's the color of your eyes, sweetie. It's why we match so well.' One thing Swifties caught immediately? The teaser clocks in at exactly 13 seconds… Swift's lucky number. And the episode's August 13 release date? Another not-so-subtle nod. The award-winning artist has called 13 her 'lucky number' for years—she was born on December 13, turned 13 on a Friday the 13th, and her first album went gold in 13 weeks. She's even been known to write the number on her hand before performances. Shortly after the teaser dropped, Swifties were in full meltdown mode. 'EVERYONE STAY CALM,' one person wrote. 'Suddenly, my entire personality is just 'waiting for Wednesday,'' another said. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 'I just had to remind myself to breathe,' a third chimed in. 'SCREAMING. CRYING. THROWING UP,' another added. One fan summed it up perfectly: 'This is more than just an album drop — it's a cultural event. The fact that Taylor is sharing her new music in Travis's podcast is iconic on so many levels. Two worlds colliding in the best way possible: football meets lyrical genius. Can't wait to soak in every word, every melody, and replay it until I know every line by heart. This is what we call a power couple move.' Even Coca-Cola joined in, posting, 'Cancelling our plans bc Taylor called 😭.' 🎤 SIGN UP for our The Voice newsletter to get access to exclusive news, interviews, insider info, sneak peeks & more 🎤 The New Heights reveal capped off a morning of Swift-fueled chaos. Earlier that day, her website transformed into a glittery orange countdown set to 12:12 PT—a number fans instantly connected to her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. Sure enough, Swift confirmed the album's title in a follow-up clip, unveiling a mint-green briefcase with the letters 'T.S.' in bright orange and teasing the blurred cover art. Taylor Nation fanned the flames by posting a carousel of 12 orange-themed photos exactly 12 minutes after the initial teaser went live. The orange aesthetic wasn't random. As Elle points out, it's been a kind of "visual shorthand" for Swift's reinvention—showing up in the Reputation snake era, the rainbow palette of Lover, and even her final Eras Tour stop, when she left the stage through the orange 'Karma' door instead of her usual route. And the Easter eggs didn't stop there—Jason Kelce showed up in the promo wearing an Eras Tour shirt, and Republic Records (Swift's label since 2018) liked the post. Paired with the orange theme and number references, fans were convinced these were deliberate nods to The Life of a Showgirl. An official release date hasn't been revealed yet, but Swift's website notes that pre-ordered vinyl and cassette editions are expected to ship ahead of Monday, Oct. 13. Chicago Sky Coach Addresses Potential Angel Reese Decision

Chicago Sky Coach Addresses Potential Angel Reese Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky have struggled with the loss of Angel Reese. Chicago has been playing without Reese since late July because of back issues. Her last game appearance was July 29 against Washington. While she found success under coach Tyler Marsh this year, the injury setback has significantly curtailed Reese's second season. Ahead of the Sky's game against the Connecticut Sun, Marsh was asked if there had been discussions about shutting Reese down for the rest of the season given how far out of a playoff spot but how close to the No. 1 pick in next year's draft the team is with a dozen games remaining. "I'd leave that to the medical staff," Marsh said. "For us and for Angel, if she's healthy and she wants to play and we want her to be out there, to be able to play. We don't want to put her in harm's way to further any existing injuries. For us it's just making sure that she's as healthy as possible. That's always been the most important thing. With the games remaining when she's ready to go then she will be out there." Angel Reese made the All-Star team for the second straight year and continued to establish herself as one of the best forwards in the WNBA. She is widely regarded as the most versatile player on the Chicago Sky roster. Throughout her second season in the WNBA, Reese has averaged 14.2 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game for the Chicago Sky. Reese was averaging a double-double and poised for her second straight season accomplishing that feat. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.
