Mysuru Dasara will be celebrated for 11 days this year
In a rare instance, the world famous Mysuru Dasara will be celebrated for 11 days this year, as against the usual 10 days. Dasara has been celebrated for 11 days on eight occasions earlier.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who heads the high-powered committee to oversee the festival celebrations, told officials of Public Works, Energy, Home, and other departments to make all preparations in advance to conduct the festival on a grand scale from September 22 to October 2.
Grand celebrations
As the State has received bountiful rains, the festival would be celebrated grandly, Mr. Siddaramaiah said. As Vijayadashami this year falls on Gandhi Jayanti, the Chief Minister instructed the executive committee that the procession of tableaus should focus on Gandhian values.
According to tradition, Navaratri starts the day after the Mahalaya Amavasya, which this year falls on September 21. Hence, Navaratri would begin on September 22. However, with Panchami falling on two consecutive days (September 26 and 27) in the lunar calendar, the festival stretches to 10 nights and 11 days.
The Gajapayana will commence on August 4, and Dasara celebrations will be inaugurated on September 22 atop the Chamundi Hills.
The meeting was attended by Ministers, MLAs, and senior officials, and the Chief Minister told the police to be civil in crowd management and take steps to avoid any stampede during the festival. The Chief Minister said about 10 lakh people/tourists are expected to attend this year's festival.
Who is to inaugurate
On inviting a special guest to inaugurate the festival, the Chief Minister said party leaders Pushpa Amarnath suggested a woman should inaugurate the festival this year, while some others suggested inviting a person who practices Gandhian principles. He would decide the guest in the next 15 days, the Chief Minister said.
The Energy Department has been told to illuminate the city of Mysuru for 22 days. The PWD officials were told to spruce up all roads in and around Mysuru.
A sum of ₹40 crore was spent on conducting various events during last year's Dasara. The executive committee would plan the programmes and funds would be released as per the requirement, the Chief Minister said.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday said the state government will respond in accordance with the law to a petition challenging the holding of Cauvery Aarti near the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam. "This is a matter of pride for us," he said, adding that ₹ 90 crore has been earmarked for the initiative. The Cauvery Aarti to be conducted every week on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with participation from religious mutts across the state. Artists have been approached to compose a unity-themed devotional song for the occasion, and Shivakumar confirmed he has written to renowned music composers for their collaboration. On Cauvery aarti during Dasara Shivakumar said, "The state government is preparing to do the Cauvery aarti programme along with the Dasara this time. Cauvery aarti will include programmes to represent the cultures of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The modalities are being worked out. "We have formed a committee under the leadership of BWSSB Chief Ram Prasath. The DC of Mandya will also be part of this committee. Various departments such as Muzrai, Kannada and Culture, Irrigation, and Tourism departments will be involved in various aspects of Cauvery aarti," he added. When asked about the Finance department's recommendation that it would be difficult to finance Cauvery aarti, he said, "The final decision lies with the government, no matter what the recommendations are. The government is committed to starting the Cauvery aarti." On the location of the Cauvery aarti venue, he said, 'This event would be held a little far from the dam keeping in mind security considerations. The Committee will take a final call on the location.'

Gandhian ideals to find place in Dasara tableaux: CM
Bengaluru: As this year's Vijayadashami coincides with Gandhi Jayanti, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday directed officials that tableaux prepared for the Mysuru Dasara celebrations must reflect Mahatma Gandhi's ideals. He said Gandhi's philosophy should be suitably represented alongside the government's welfare schemes and achievements. 'This year Dasara falls on Gandhi Jayanti -- on October 2. So, I have instructed officials that Dasara should be celebrated in a manner that makes Gandhi Jayanti meaningful. Especially the tableaux should reflect Gandhi's ideals,' the CM told reporters. Siddaramaiah briefed reporters after presiding over a high-level committee meeting at Vidhana Soudha on the preparations for Dasara-2025. The CM said the historical and cultural significance of the festival should not be overshadowed by sheer extravagance. He emphasised that unnecessary spending does not amount to grandeur and that public safety and convenience must be the top priority. 'This year, Dasara will begin on September 22 and culminate with the Jamboo Savari on October 2, making it an 11-day event, instead of the usual 10,' the CM said. He emphasised that the programmes should be designed to uphold the rich cultural, religious, and historical traditions of the Mysuru Dasara, which is globally renowned. He stated that while Rs 40 crore was allocated last year, adequate funds will be provided this year as well to organise a grand celebration. He asked departments to plan meaningful exhibitions and displays to showcase government initiatives and guarantee schemes in a way that connects with the public. ' He also called for people-centric policies to be effectively communicated during the festivities. With more than 10 lakh people expected to attend, including foreign tourists, the CM directed officials to give the utmost attention to crowd management and safety measures. He said police personnel must be people-friendly and law and order should be maintained without any lapses. The number of seats in front of the Mysore Palace will be reduced this time to manage crowding during the Jamboo Savari. Officials were asked to ensure that there is no overcrowding at any of the programme venues.
