Montreal mayor wants Quebec to appoint a homelessness minister in cabinet shuffle
She made the request at a news conference during which she also proposed $22.5 million to tackle homelessness.
Quebec Premier François Legault has announced he will shuffle his cabinet this fall, and Plante says it's the right time to have a minister dedicated to managing what she calls a humanitarian crisis.
Plante also announced that city council will study a number of projects, including a $700,000 allocation for shuttle services to transport vulnerable people toward resources.
Beginning Wednesday it will also evaluate whether to grant more than $21 million to roughly 40 community organizations over the next three years.
Plante said the funds would come from the city, but she's also encouraging other levels of government to step up in the fight against homelessness.

Joly: Visits to Saab, Lockheed 'normal' part of her job amid F-35 review
OTTAWA — Industry Minister Mélanie Joly says Canadians shouldn't read too much into her visit to a Swedish defence manufacturer that comes right in the middle of a major government review of the F-35 fighter jet procurement. Joly says she visited Saab's facilities in Sweden this week and was shown the Gripen-E jet, which is one of the possible contenders to replace the controversial U.S.-made F-35 fighter jet. Joly says this is a "normal" part of her job, and that she will also be meeting with Lockheed Martin, which makes the F-35, in the coming weeks. Joly is wrapping up a trip to Sweden and Finland with Secretary of State for Defence Stephen Fuhr, which was focused on strengthening defence-industrial ties in Europe. Saskatchewan Premier Moe announces plan to upgrade important road for farming sector
YORKTON — Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says the province plans to cover half the improvement cost for a road deemed crucial for economic activity in the farming sector. Moe says Grain Millers Drive in Yorkton, northeast of Regina, is a critical access point for major agriculture businesses, connecting farmers to national and international markets. The premier didn't say how much money the province would provide, as the upgrade won't happen until the needed improvements are determined. Grain Millers Drive provides access to an oat mill and two canola crush facilities, including one crusher that's the largest in North America. Moe's announcement comes after China slapped a tariff of nearly 76 per cent on Canadian canola, causing the value of the crop to fall significantly. The premier is set to meet with federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald this week to discuss Canada's response to Chinese tariffs. Trump admin imposes sanctions on more International Criminal Court officials
The Trump administration escalated its fight against the International Criminal Court by imposing sanctions on four more court officials involved in work related to alleged Israeli and US war crimes. In a statement Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the State Department was designating Kimberly Prost of Canada, Nicolas Guillou of France, Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal for their work in the ICC 'to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute nationals of the United States or Israel, without the consent of either nation.' The sanctions were imposed under an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in February that authorizes punitive measures like sanctions and possible entrance bans on ICC personnel because of its 'illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel.' The executive order was already used to sanction ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan and four ICC judges. According to a State Department fact sheet, Prost, an ICC judge 'is being designated for ruling to authorize the ICC's investigation into U.S. personnel in Afghanistan.' Guillou, another judge, 'is being designated for ruling to authorize the ICC's issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant,' the fact sheet said. 'Deputy Prosecutors Shameem Khan and Niang are being designated for continuing to support illegitimate ICC actions against Israel, including upholding the ICC's arrest warrants targeting Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant since they assumed leadership for the ICC's Office of the Prosecutor,' it said. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant in November 2024 for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Trump also signed an executive order authorizing sanctions and visa restrictions for members of the court during his first term in 2020, months after the ICC authorized a probe into alleged war crimes committed in Afghanistan by US and Afghan forces as well as alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Taliban.
