Seth MacFarlane calls for less 'pessimistic' and 'dystopian' stories: 'It's so one-sided'

The 'Family Guy' creator discussed the need for more hopeful stories in Hollywood.
Seth MacFarlane shared the need for more hopeful stories in Hollywood amid a plethora of dark projects released in recent years.
MacFarlane sat down with Ted Danson on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast to discuss the importance of optimism and fun. The multi-hyphenate shared that he took on The Orville in order to put out something more positive in media.
"The dishes that we are serving up are so dystopian and so pessimistic," MacFarlane said. "And yeah, there's a lot to be pessimistic about, but it's so one-sided."
MacFarlane said while he enjoys shows like The Handmaid's Tale, he's become fatigued with dystopian narratives. The Family Guy creator noted that every time he drives down Beverly Boulevard, he only sees billboards for horror films and other "negative" projects.
"They're certainly giving us a lot of cautionary tales, but where are the blueprints that they once gave us for how to do things correctly?" he said. "It can't all be just, 'Here's what's going to happen to you if you f--- up.' You do need, 'Here's what you can achieve if you change your ways and do things right.'"
The actor added that Hollywood has become obsessed with anti-heroes "ever since Tony Soprano." This has created good television, he said, but in the case of a show like The White Lotus, "no one is someone you'd want to be."
Part of the entertainment industry's job, MacFarlane said, is to create characters that inspire people to be better.
"That's the only thing really that Hollywood can do that's worthwhile because as we all learned from this election, nobody gives a f--- what celebrities think," he said. "We can tweet, we can talk. Like, people don't care. They don't care. What we do do well is tell stories. And we're not doing the best job right now of telling those stories in a way that gives people hope."

Taylor Swift Announces New Album — And Emotions Run Wild On Social Media

Taylor Swift'sannouncement on Tuesday that she will be releasing a new album later this year inspired quite the emotional reaction on social media. The singer announced just after midnight ET that the new album― her 12th original release ― is titled 'The Life of a Showgirl' in a teaser clip for'New Heights,' the podcast hosted by her boyfriend, NFL player Travis Kelce, and his brother, Jason. Although no release date was specified, her site said a vinyl version will ship before Oct. 13. She will presumably offer more details when she appears on the podcast Wednesday. Not surprisingly, the news of new music from Swift swiftly became a hot topic on social media, where people dished on what it all means. So, yes, people had thoughts. 4 suspects arrested in burglary of Brad Pitt's home

LOS ANGELES — Four people have been arrested in connection with a burglary at Brad Pitt's Los Angeles home in June, authorities said Monday night. A smash-and-grab theft crew hopped a fence at Pitt's Los Feliz residence on June 25, then ransacked the place and made off with unspecified valuables, police said at the time. Pitt was not home at the time. Jaquory Arman Watson and Damari Zair Charles, both 18, were two of the four suspects identified Monday, according to KNBC. Watson and Charles were arrested last week for an unrelated burglary in Orange County, sources told the station. The other two suspects have not been publicly identified. Watson and Charles are being held without bail in Orange County and pleaded not guilty to the other burglary on Monday, Entertainment Weekly reported. Charges in the Pitt burglary are expected to follow. Investigators believe all four robbers targeted a series of homes in wealthy neighborhoods across Southern California, ABC News reported. They do not believe Pitt was targeted specifically. He was on the road promoting 'F1: The Movie' during the break-in. The break-in at Pitt's home was one of a number of burglaries affecting various stars across Southern California this summer. In late July, thieves attempted to bust into Teddi Mellencamp's residence while she was home, and Los Angeles Dodgers star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto's home was targeted the following week. _______
