Kerry photo's reeling in the years moment for Listowel natives

Childhood days when over 60 children from nearby houses played in safe surrounds in what is known locally as 'the backway' now seems like a lost world for those who can remember it.
There are no children living in William Street or Upper William street today, and many of the businesses that once flourished there have either changed hands or changed roles.
Today, the lanes are desolate. Absent is the laughter of children and the sound of their play. But as the late John B Keane once wrote, 'A golden mellow peace forever clings along the little street.'
In fact, John B's son, also John, together with Gráinne Keane-Stack, Catherine O'Carroll, and Marie Mulvihill are captured in a famous photograph taken in 1965 in the backway. They recently returned to the exact spot to retake the photo, marking its sixtieth anniversary.
The backway is located behind Thomas Mulvihill's and John B Keane's pubs, and extends from the back gates of Mulvihill's to McKenna's yard wall. It was a perfect location for sporting events, and even driving lessons!
Football, tennis, handball, bicycle racing, jumble sales, and in later years the all-important ritual of courtship, were a feature of the lane. Marie Mulvihill recalls when the lane was a place bustling with fun, activity and friendship. In May, Marie, Gráinne, Catherine and John returned for the photograph, and in so doing they rekindled many memories.
'We lived and played during a different era back then. The backway was a welcome, safe haven where we got to hang out with the neighbours' children. For the four of us in the photos, it was a most nostalgic day to stand together again for the photograph,' Marie told The Kerryman.
Marie said 65 children regularly played in the backway at one point – all of whom were living in businesses from the top of Upper William Street to the bottom of William Street.
The famous backway boasts of All-Ireland winners and even claims rugby star Johnny Sexton whose father, Jerry, lived in William Street. Cyclist Gene Moriarty's father also sped up and down on his racing bike with children clamouring for a go on it.
'The matches would quite often be very serious events against the lads from other parts of Listowel. There was always someone kicking a ball out there, invariably losing it when it sailed up and over McKenna's high wall. We had great jumble sales, spreading out comics, dinky cars, tea sets, and pretty shook-looking dolls. Even samples of lipstick and make-up from the chemists could be bought,' Marie said.
During the school holidays, Marie recalls being ushered out to the backway, out from under her mother's feet, and not returning until dinner and tea time or when light started to fade.
'There were no cars parked there, but we used to enjoy mart and horse fair day because we would get to pet the donkeys tied to the lampposts. Sometime, misfortunate sheep would be herded down to the back gates of the three butchers shops. I vividly remember seeing mountains of intestines when I'd venture to pop in,' she recalled.
'Damien and Barbara Stack of Stack's Arcade held concerts in their furniture storeroom with entry from the back gate being a penny. We thought we were in the equivalent of a movie set, with stage and curtains, and about forty kids cheering on the older ones who sang in French, mar dhea, and especially the Eurovision winning song in whatever language they won.'
Marie concludes: 'There were very few fights, perhaps because our parents weren't far away. But the boys definitely frequently suffered the indignity of a kick in the shin if they hit a girl with a ball. They were special times for all of us. No doubt.'

The AFL has been a common destination for male and female GAA stars due to the professional state of the sport and its similarity to Gaelic football. Advertisement 2 The record for most Irish players in one season was set at 34 last season 2 Tipperary footballer Orla O'Dwyer won the 2021 AFLW Grand Final match with the Brisbane Lions Plenty of high profile Gaelic footballers have moved from the GAA to Australia over the years, such as Oisín Mullin, Conor McKenna and Zach Tuohy to name a few. While there has been a long standing tradition of a handful of Irish players competing in the AFL, Cora Staunton has been credited with popularising the move from Ladie's Gaelic Football to the AFLW when joining Greater Western Sydney (GWS) in 2018. The following season nine players followed her lead to Australia in search of professional sport. The upcoming AFLW season will break the record for most Irish players competing in the competition with 39 players set to play for 13 of the competing 18 team in the league. Advertisement The record was broken just last year when 34 Irish players featured in the AFLW. The AFLW season runs from 14 August to 29 November which just about doesn't clash with the inter-county LGFA season which came to an end on Sunday as Dublin claimed the Brendan Martin Cup. Quite a few players who featured in Sunday's All-Ireland final will make the trip to Australia to compete in the AFLW. Meath's Aoibhin Cleary and Vikki Wall will compete against Sinead Goldrick and Eilish O'Dowd yet again this year, but this time in Australia and with a Sherrin ball. Ó Coisdealbha said: 'This is a brilliant moment for the Irish-Australian sporting connection. TJ Reid and wife Niamh de Brun's gorgeous pregnancy reveal "With more Irish players than ever involved in the AFLW, we're delighted to bring their stories and performances into homes across the country.' Advertisement The Carlton Irish contingent is made up of Maria Cannon, Dayna Finn, Erone Fitzpatrick, Síofra O'Connell and Aisling Reidy while Joanne Cregg, Orlagh Lally, Aisling McCarthy, Amy Mulholland and Aine Tighe will line out for Fremantle. There's two teams with four Irish squad members as Amy Boyle-Carr, Kayleigh Cronin, Grace Kelly and Niamh Kelly will be representing Adelaide while the current champions North Melbourne will be home for Blaithin Bogue, Amy Gavin Mangan, Erika O'Shea and Vikki Wall. Brisbane have signed Neasa Dooley, Jennifer Dunne and Orla O'Dwyer ahead of the new season as Muireann Atkinson, Kellyann Hogan and Sarah Rowe join up with Collingwood. Rachel Kearns, Kate Kenny and Aishling Moloney will play for Geelong while Tanya Kennedy, Paris McCarthy and Julie O'Sullivan sign for Sydney. Advertisement There are four teams who will have just a pair of Irish players with Clara Fitzpatrick and Niamh McLaughlin (Gold Coast), Grace Kos and Eilish O'Dowd (GWS), Aileen Gilroy and Aine McDonagh (Hawthorn) and Sinead Goldrick and Blaithin Mackin (Melbourne) all competing. Meath LGFA captain Aoibhin Cleary will be the only Irish woman on her lonesome in an AFLW squad as she joins Richmond. The first three rounds of TG4's fixtures have been finalised with plenty of Irish players on show:

Dublin manager betting suspended after 'weight of support' for leading candidate

Betting has been suspended on Declan Darcy becoming the next Dublin manager as speculation has mounted about his possible appointment for the role. Darcy played football for Dublin and Leitrim and was part of Jim Gavin's backroom team, which won six All-Ireland titles in seven years. From the get-go, Darcy has been a leading contender alongside Ger Brennan. If the online rumour mill is to be believed, Darcy could recruit a number of ex-players into his staff and cojole back some of the top players that recently stepped away into returning for 2026. Darcy has been working with Leinster Rugby as a performance coach since 2022, and it remains to be seen if he can also juggle both roles if he takes the Dublin job. Spokesperson for BoyleSports Brian O'Keefe said of the Dublin manager market: "While there hasn't been a pen put to paper yet, the rumour mill is in full swing and we've suspended betting on Declan Darcy being named the next Dublin manager after a weight of support on him being their man. The other leading candidate is former Dublin player and All-Ireland Club winning captain Ger Brennan, who recently stepped away from the Louth Footballers after a wildly successful spell with the Wee County. Brennan guided Louth to their first Leinster title since 1957, as well as bringing the side to the All-Ireland quarter-finals in 2024 and started in Dublin's All-Ireland final wins in both 2011 and 2013. As expected, the Dublin County Board, famously tight-lipped about conducting internal business, has not leaked information, and no public date for ratification has been set. Dessie Farrell stepped away from the Dublin Footballers after five seasons in charge, guiding the county to All-Ireland titles in 2020 and 2023.
