Grandville orthodontist facing federal child exploitation charges

Yahooa day ago
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An orthodontist who formerly practiced in Grandville is now facing federal child exploitation charges.
Thomas Shannon, 43, was arrested in Frankfort, Michigan, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Michigan announced Wednesday. He is charged by criminal complaint with sexual exploitation of a minor, attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, possession of child pornography, receipt of child pornography and attempted receipt of child pornography, according to the attorney's office.
According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court Monday, a therapist reported in 2021 that a teenager had been sexually exploited. The victim told police that she had received money in exchange for sending illicit images, the complaint continues, and investigators traced the Snapchat and CashApp accounts to Shannon, who lived in Byron Township.
Sex offender, busted in sting but not arrested, snagged again
In 2022, amid a Kent County investigation, the complaint says Shannon hired a private forensic investigator to search his phone 'in an attempt to prove that he did not possess any child pornography.'
'The examiner, however, found child pornography and turned it over to police,' the U.S. Attorney's Office wrote in a release.
Authorities found evidence that Shannon possessed and received child pornography, according to the complaint. Investigators found that Shannon had communicated with multiple minor victims whom he met online, the complaint alleges. One was just 12 years old. The complaint placed most of the victims out of state.
Shannon was in January 2023. But according to the federal complaint, he was released on bond. Investigators found that he was on bond for those charges while communicating with one victim — a 13-year-old — in 2024, the complaint alleges.
The state case against Shannon is pending. A status conference in that case has been set for early October.
In the federal case, a detention hearing is scheduled for Friday.

Snohomish man sentenced to nearly 22 years for child sexual abuse crimes

This story was originally published on A Snohomish County man was sentenced to 262 months (21.8 years) in prison today for the production of images including child sexual abuse and attempted enticement of minors, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced. Bennett S. Park, 43, was arrested in 2023 when he attempted to pick up a 13-year-old in a residential area of Everett. Park told an undercover officer that he planned to pick up and molest the 13-year-old before his arrest. Snohomish man sentenced for child sexual abuse In July 2023, Park responded to an online advertisement placed by an undercover Homeland Security Investigation agent, according to the plea agreement. The ad falsely claimed that the agent had two young children who could be molested. Park responded to the message and indicated that he was actively molesting children between the ages of 11 and 17. Park told the agent that he wanted to molest the agent's fictional children, but already had plans to meet a 13-year-old child. In response, law enforcement quickly put Park under surveillance to identify and protect the 13-year-old. At approximately 1:45 a.m. on August 8, 2023, Park was arrested by law enforcement officers just after the 13-year-old entered his vehicle. '[Park] dedicated years of his life to cultivating, grooming, and enticing young girls in an effort to manipulate them to engage in sexual chatting, sexual acts, and producing sexual imagery for the sole purpose of feeding his pedophilia,' Assistant U.S. Attorney Cecelia Gregson wrote to the court. Park's electronic devices were reviewed after his arrest, which revealed to law enforcement that Park had communicated with dozens of minors. Law enforcement was able to identify 23 of the minor victims. Park convinced the minors to provide images of sexual abuse via Instagram, Discord, Snapchat, Facebook, Gmail, and Zoom. Park detailed his crimes with eight different victims in the plea agreement. Judge Martinez ordered Park to register as a sex offender. A hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 14, 2025, to determine the amount of restitution Park owes. Park was also fined $3,000 to pay into a fund for victims of child abuse imagery. 'This defendant damaged untold lives – those of his victims and those of their family members, friends, and adults who tried but could not keep them safe from a predator lurking on the internet,' said Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller. 'I commend the quick work by law enforcement to intervene before he could molest another child.' U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez ordered Park to be on supervised release for twenty years following his prison term. Follow Jason Sutich on X. Send news tips here.

Pekin man sentenced to 10 years for soliciting minor online

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A federal judge in Peoria handed down a 10-year prison term for a Pekin man accused of attempting to entice a minor for sexual purposes. In addition, Joseph D. Perkins, 32, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm to register as a sex offender. Mihm also imposed a seven-year term of supervised release, the federal version of probation, when Perkins finishes his prison term. Perkins was found guilty at an April 2025 jury trial where prosecutors presented evidence that from January 2023 to March 2024, he engaged in online chats with a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl. In reality, it was an undercover officer. During that time frame, he repeatedly asked the 'girl' for nude photos and tried to meet up her with to engage in sexual activity. When they finally agreed to meet in March 2204, he was arrested by federal agents. He has been in custody of the U.S. marshals ever since. Under federal sentencing rules, Perkins must serve at least 85% of his prison term. The 10-year sentence is the minimum for the charge of attempted enticement of a minor.
