East Coast prepares for major heat wave as temperatures reach triple digits
Tens of millions of Americans are under heat alerts as extreme heat hits several parts of the country this week, especially the northeast.
Extreme heat warnings issued for Philadelphia, New York City and Boston go into effect on Sunday as the heat ramps up for the second half of the weekend. An extreme heat watch was also issued for Washington, D.C., and Baltimore on Monday.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams told reporters Saturday that temperatures will reach the high 90s, and peak heat on Tuesday will be 100 degrees.
"The conditions can be deadly and life-threatening if you are not prepared," he said at a news conference.

Zachary Iscol, the city's commissioner of Emergency Management Department, told reporters that the city would be activating its emergency heat plan Sunday and opening 248 cooling centers.
He advised New Yorkers to limit strenuous activities outdoors and to limit their electricity use, including washing machines, during peak power use.
Other parts of the country will also face similar issues due to the high heat.
Heat alerts have been issued from Colorado to Maine, including more than 150 million Americans.
Heat index values in the Midwest will soar into the triple digits this afternoon, with some areas experiencing feels-like temperatures closer to 105-110 degrees. The extreme heat could be life-threatening.
The heat begins expanding east on Sunday with highs soaring into the 90s from the Great Lakes to southern New England. The increasingly humid conditions will make it feel even hotter than that.

Heat index values will hit the triple digits across much of the Midwest again tomorrow, including the Chicago area, with parts of the Northeast seeing feels-like temperatures soaring into the upper 90s to near 100 as well.
Heat relief will be sweeping into the northern Plains over the next 24 to 48 hours as the extreme heat shifts east in the coming days.

So if one match is rescheduled for later in the day, presumably the corresponding other match in the group would also need to be. Of course, temperature is only part of the story. The heat index and WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) use additional factors such as relative humidity and sun intensity to measure how adverse conditions are. But were these MLS fixtures, it appears likely they would be rescheduled to night kickoffs. According to information from the league's website published in 2016, matches will go into a delay if and when the WBGT rise above 92.3. Given that all of these kickoffs occur before sundown – and given that in the Eastern United States, heat and humidity go together – it's very likely conditions will exceed that threshold at least at some of these scheduled fixtures. Looking forward, there may be even more potential for heat to have extreme impact on the knockout phase. Of the 15 scheduled single-elimination matches, 11 are scheduled to kick off at 4 pm ET or earlier in outdoor conditions. Temperatures aren't expected to be quite as hot into early July as they are the first few days of the coming week, but summer forecasts in particular are turbulent, and another wave of extreme heat before the competition ends wouldn't be all that surprising.

Fire danger grows as heat continues across Colorado, cooler weather ahead
The first official weekend of summer is here, and it's been a hot one. Denver tied the record high of 99° on Friday and came just one degree shy of tying another record on Saturday. Sunday will bring more of the same, with high temperatures climbing into the low to mid-90s across much of the eastern plains. In the high country, highs will range from the 70s to 80s. The big change on Sunday is an increase in fire weather concerns. CBS Fire weather conditions will expand eastward to include much of the I-25 corridor. Elevated fire danger is expected, with wind gusts reaching 30 to 45 mph—a key ingredient for rapid fire growth. Relief from the heat is on the way. A cold front arrives Sunday night into Monday, bringing temperatures down into the upper 70s and low 80s to start the work week. Daily chances for showers and thunderstorms also return.

Thousands lose power around West Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Thousands of customers around West Michigan lost power Saturday afternoon. The Consumers Energy Power map showed that there were around 7,000 outages across Allegan County, mostly concentrated in the Saugatuck and Douglas area, though service had been restored to most by around 6:30 p.m. Farther north along the lakeshore in Muskegon County, there were hundreds of people without power in the Fruitland Township and White Lake area. There are also pockets of outages around Kent County, including one near downtown that affected about 1,500 customers. As of 7 p.m., Kent County had more than 1,000 customers without power. Consumers Energy told News 8 that high winds and storms from Saturday morning were contributing factors to the outages. It said it had 200 crews working on restoration across the state.
