Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly sends message to Arsenal over Andrey Santos deal

Metro20-05-2025

Todd Boehly appears to have ruled out a summer move for Andrey Santos, insisting Chelsea are 'really excited' about what the midfielder can add to Enzo Maresca's squad.
Chelsea signed Santos, 21, from Vasco da Gama in January 2023 before immediately loaning the youngster back to the Brazilian outfit for the remainder of the season.
Santos went on to join Nottingham Forest on a temporary basis the following summer, but made just two first-team appearances across a disappointing five-month spell at the City Ground.
However, over the last season-and-a-half, Santos has managed to get his career back on track in French football on loan at Strasbourg – Chelsea's sister club, also owned by Boehly's BlueCo consortium.
While Strasbourg narrowly missed out on European football on the final day of the Ligue 1 season, Santos earned himself plenty of admirers across an eye-catching campaign, racking up ten goals and three assists for Liam Rosenior's men.

Rosenior had been keen to keep hold of Santos beyond the summer, while recent reports claimed Arsenal and PSG were both 'working hard' to lure the Brazil international away from Stamford Bridge.
But speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum on Tuesday, Chelsea co-owner Boehly confirmed Santos remained central to Maresca's plans and would be joining up with the rest of the squad for the upcoming Club World Cup.
'We're going to the Club World Cup so, right now, we're laser-focused on the Club World Cup,' Boehly said.
'We have some players that are joining us for the Club World Cup that weren't on the team.
'Andrey Santos is coming from Strasbourg. We're really excited about him and what we think he can add to the squad.'

The American billionaire added: 'The challenge that we really have is how many matches these guys are playing. The calendar is really tight, they put in so much effort and energy and the injuries are continuing to go up and up and up.
'We're going to have to revisit what the calendar looks like and how much football they can actually play.
'Obviously, they're built to play football, they love playing football, so we're trying to find the balance of what's the right amount of football.'
According to Boehly, Chelsea will continue their efforts to 'build the best portfolio of players' possible when the transfer window opens for business.
Asked if Chelsea are likely to spend big in the summer market, he replied: 'Listen, I think we've done most of our investing.
'We're not looking at it as a spend, we're looking at it as an investment and we're trying to build the best portfolio of players that can perform at the highest level, for the longest periods of time.
'I think there's going to be a lot of investment in this window… just what I'm hearing, what we're feeling, so there's going to be lot of well-heeled clubs looking to add to their teams and that's only good for the Premier League.'
Boehly is 'excited' about the future at Stamford Bridge, encouraging fans to be patient for success while Chelsea grapple for 'stability'.
'We're excited about what the future holds. We think we've got one of the best young teams,' he went on.
'We were, early on, doing seven, eight, nine-year contracts, because we really wanted to make sure that we could keep the team together for a long time.
'If you read a book called The Captain Class, it talks about the 15 best teams in the world and I think one of the things you see is that in order to have a really good team, you ultimately need stability within the team, within the environment. More Trending
'The only way that comes is through time and we've set it up to be able to benefit from that.'
A 1-0 win over Manchester United last Friday saw Chelsea rise to fourth in the Premier League table heading into what promises to be an intriguing final day of action.
Given their far superior goal difference to Aston Villa, the Blues know they will qualify for next year's Champions League with victory at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Just three days later, Maresca's men face off against Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis.

Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Barcelona in Partey talks EXCLUSIVE, ‘green light' for Gyokeres deal, Sesko latest

Arteta on Guard of Honour Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says Liverpool 'deserve' their Guard of Honour. Arne Slot's champions were BOOED by Chelsea fans as they walked through the tribute of Enzo Maresca's team last weekend. Arteta doubled down on his assertion that Arsenal were 'the best team' in the Champions League and should have now been preparing for a Munich Final against Inter Milan. But the Spaniard, who admitted his side had taken a 'step backwards' this term, promised his team would show Anfield a display of dignity and use it as 'motivation' for next term. Liverpool deserve that. They've been the best team, they've been the most consistent. What Arne Slot and the coaching staff have done has been fascinating, it's been really good and they fully deserve it. And that's the sport, when somebody is better you have to applaud and accept and try to reach that level. Something that has to drive you, motivate you, and pain probably is a good one to use. When you don't really want to do something but it's the right thing to do, usually it is a motivation for next season. Mikel Arteta

Pep Guardiola confirms two Man City transfer decisions before Club World Cup

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has spoken about the club's squad planning ahead of next season amid speculation over stars about to enter the final year of their contracts Pep Guardiola has confirmed Manchester City goalkeepers Ederson and Stefan Ortega will remain with the club next season. The Catalan coach revealed the Premier League side appear unlikely to dip into the market to improve their options in net. Ederson and Ortega have shared the net at the Etihad Stadium for a number of years, with the former taking the no.1 slot for Guardiola's side. The duo are both set to enter the final year of their contracts however, increasing speculation that a change could soon be on the cards in goal at City. ‌ City have little time for rest before they are called upon for Club World Cup duty. Their first match takes place against Wydad AC on June 18. ‌ There is an opportunity to move for new players, with a transfer window open until June 10 but Guardiola appears content with his options for the moment. Though goalkeeper was an area of discussion with the club's hierarchy. "We have spoken about the situation regarding squad planning and the two goalkeepers we have will continue," Guardiola told reporters at a golf event in Catalonia on Monday. That did not prevent the ex-Bayern Munich boss being taken to task over Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia. The shotstopper saw an approach by Arsenal last summer, while Barcelona appear to be in pole position for his signature this year, despite reported interest from the Gunners and City. "Joan Garcia is a really good goalkeeper, but City are linked with 500 players in every transfer window," Guardiola said. "He's an Espanyol player and I don't know what happen, but I'm told by the Espanyol guys [playing in the golf event] he's an extraordinary goalkeeper. The references we have are very good." ‌ City are already intending on leaving at least two bodies at home for their Club World Cup adventure in the United States. Midfield star Mateo Kovacic is to undergo surgery after nursing a heel injury. The Croatian will miss the tournament and be unavailable until the start of next season. Guardiola had hinted that the club were trying to manage the player's injury when he left him out of the FA Cup final squad as a precaution. The Manchester club are also said to have opted against including James McAtee in their squad. The 22-year-old will instead join up with England's pre-tournament training squad ahead of the under-21s Euros in Slovakia.

Sam Thompson raises more than £100,000 on first day of Soccer Aid challenge

On Monday, the 32-year-old set off from Chelsea's Stamford Bridge stadium in London, the location of last year's charity match in aid of Unicef, and ran a full marathon before cycling a further 23 miles to reach Milton Keynes. He will end the challenge at Manchester United's Old Trafford, which will host the 2025 game that Thompson is due to play in. Speaking at the day one finish line in Buckinghamshire, Thompson said: 'Day one was terrifying. I can't believe I did it. I was so worried that no one would turn up for me, but as I started to approach the stadium and the finish line, I could hear the cheering. 'I started to get emotional. It means so much to me that people turned out. 'It's been tougher than I could have imagined and there were points when I was really struggling. 'I was in a lot of pain after the marathon, but before I started the bike I was checked over by the physio and medical team, just to make sure I was fit enough to carry on. 'I'm taking one step at a time, one pedal at a time, but I'm going to find a way to make it to the finish and stay focused on why I'm doing this. 'It's to raise as much money for Unicef as we can – to support the incredible work they do for children around the world. That's what this is all about.' A post shared by Sam Thompson (@samthompsonuk) Thompson ran 26 miles towards Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, where he then cycled 23 miles further to the first finish line at MK Dons's Stadium MK ground in Milton Keynes. The I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! winner, who has so far raised £100,603.46 for Unicef, was joined by This Morning's Ben Shephard for part of the cycling leg. TV presenter Shephard, 50, said: 'I think Sam is incredibly brave and courageous taking on a challenge like this. I've done some physical ultra-marathons and I know that it takes its toll. 'Mentally it's a really tough battle because for five days he's got to run five marathons then having finished, jump on the bike on top of that. 'What I know and love about Sam is his enthusiasm, his energy and his positivity and that is going to be tested to his absolute limit. 'He's going to have to draw on all of his experience of meeting the children in Guatemala that inspired him with their joy that got them through all sorts of really difficult things in their lives. 'Sam's got the biggest heart and despite the pain he's going to be going through, I can't wait to see him cross that finish line on Friday and get that ball to Old Trafford.' Thompson was joined at the start line by his sister Louise Thompson, her partner Ryan Libbey, his nephew Leo, and comedian Joel Dommett, who ran with him for the first 20km. From Stadium MK, Thompson will travel to Aston Villa's Villa Park in Birmingham, then on to Port Vale's Vale Park in Stoke-on-Trent, then to Everton's Goodison Park in Liverpool, before finishing at Old Trafford. A post shared by Soccer Aid for UNICEF (@socceraid) His journey will be broadcast live on ITV's This Morning and Hits Radio each day, with the star due to arrive at the finish line on Friday June 6. The challenge, which sees him running five marathons and cycling over 130 miles, will also feature in a one-off documentary on ITV1, Sam Thompson's Match Ball Mission, which will air in the lead-up to Soccer Aid for Unicef. Thompson is taking on the challenge to raise money for Unicef's work to help children grow up safe and healthy. Soccer Aid 2025 will take place on Sunday June 15, at Old Trafford, and will be broadcast live on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player.
