The Cole Palmer final: Chelsea ‘complete the set' and turn Wroclaw blue
After three years and a total spend of more than £1 billion under the Boehly-Clearlake consortium, it was ultimately fitting that the best signing of them all was the one who delivered the first trophy of this new era at Chelsea. It may be Boehly and Clearlake's club, but this is unquestionably Cole Palmer's team. For Chelsea's supporters, it will be remembered as the night they 'completed the set', becoming the first side to win all of Uefa's major tournaments. For the rest of the footballing world, though, this will be remembered as Palmer's final. Two of the most fabulous assists – one with his left foot, one with his right – turned defeat into victory against Real Betis. Chelsea's fans and players know what their rivals will say about this Conference League triumph under the moody skies of Wroclaw. That a club of their financial firepower should not even be in this competition, and that victory was simply a base-level expectation. They have heard it all before. But try telling the 11,000 Chelsea fans in Poland that this is not a proper trophy. Try telling Palmer that his imperious performance was not meaningful. Try telling Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea head coach who delightedly bounced into the arms of his players and coaches after Jadon Sancho struck the third, that this did not count. On the faces of those in blue, you could see what this meant. You could see how it felt. Are Chelsea back as a title-winning force? Time will tell on that front. But nothing builds a winning culture like winning finals, and Chelsea – who overturned Abde Ezzalzouli's opener with goals from Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Jackson, Sancho and Moises Caicedo – did what was required of them at the end of the longest of continental adventures. The happiness was too much after Nottingham Forest so we struggled a bit first half but second we were much better. The message after Forest was 'guys if we want to be an important team, what is done is done, we have to win the final'. But we had 48 hours less than them, they played on Friday for nothing and we played on Sunday for something big. The process was good and we attack in behind [in the second half]. In the first half we just tried to play and not go behind. Joe I promise you [to Joe Cole], I would start always with Reece but I'm just trying to protect him. Has played more this season than the last two. He is a top player for us, like Cole [Palmer]. To be the first club to have won everything possible, you can see the fans celebrating now and it shows how much it means to them. We knew they were going to be a good team, especially at the start with their fans pushing them on, but we knew it was going to die off. We just had to wait and pick our moments and that is what we did in the second half. Watching from the bench you can see where the spaces are and how you can help the team. When I came on for Benny [Badiashile] I could see he was working so hard and then the gaps were open. He did that for me, laid the foundations for me. Of course it is devastating to know you are not starting in a final. I want to play every game but it was the manager's decision. Once he made the decision, I had to move on and accept it and be ready when I was needed. I thought in the first half we were flat. The game didn't go our way early on and it looked like it took a lot out of us. That is a major blow because their left-winger has looked such a threat all night. Rodríguez is a teenager with plenty of pace. Jackson with a spin into the left channel, but the flag goes up for offside and his cutback failed to find a blue shirt in any case. Real Betis looking more subdued as an attacking force, which is helping Chelsea pin them back. Reece James demonstrating the quality of his delivery straight away, drifting a cross across the face of goal. Like Gusto, James is tucking into a narrow position, trying to leave Neto isolated against his full-back. Isco runs out of room near the Chelsea corner flag after another delightful piece of skill. No surprise at all that Malo Gusto has been hooked. Sorry to say it so bluntly, but he was disastrously bad in that first half. A moment of confusion in the Betis defence there, with goalkeeper Adrian and centre-back Natan almost colliding but they scrambled the ball away. Real Betis are pressing in something like a 4-2-4 shape with the forwards particularly narrow. Chelsea are struggling to feed the ball into Fernandez and Palmer in the pockets. Neto takes on an ambitious shot from the corner of the box but he slashes horribly over the bar. Ezzalzouli has been a live-wire for Betis, showing his turn of pace when pushing the ball on the outside of Gusto to win a corner. Another feint from Isco to send a blue shirt the wrong way but it will not drop for a Betis player in the box. Chelsea break through Madueke but the move slows down. Chelsea now seeing more of the ball but they are struggling to play through a well-organised Betis team. Cucurella tried to go longer to Jackson but Natan and Barta snuffed out the danger. Betis are showing Chelsea wide at every opportunity. The Chelsea players aren't happy with how this game is being played. Palmer was gesturing angrily at Neto a few moments ago, after the Portuguese had not pressed as high up the pitch as his team-mate wanted. It feels a little tetchy. Better from Fernandez, knocking the ball around the corner first time to Caicedo. Neto's cross to the back post was headed away by Betis right-back Sabaly. Isco then shows his defensive diligence to win the ball back at the edge of the box. And it should be 2-0 Betis! Another swift break, with Ezzalzouli sitting down Gusto before he bobbled the pass three or four yards back to Isco but his shot was deflected over. A better pass and he was rolling that it the corner, it bounced up on him. That was more good movement from Jackson, spinning into the right channel but Chelsea then consolidate and probe around the edge of the box, keeping possession patiently. Ambitious shot from former Barcelona defender Marc Bartra who tried to whip the ball over Jorgensen, and the Chelsea goalkeeper was at full stretch to push the ball around the post. It was Gusto's error in midfield, allowing Betis to suddenly attack. A fabulous assist by the great Isco, still going strong at 33. The Betis fans were loud before... they have reached another level now. Maresca has changed his goalkeeper, right-back and both centre-halves from the win at Forest, and Chelsea have started this game in a state of flux at the back. It did not look like Rodríguez made much contact with the ball. Antony with his first effort of the night, but it was always going to be difficult to keep that header down from Ezzalzouli's chipped cross. Palmer with his first foray forward down the right, and his close control freezes the Betis defenders who know they cannot touch him, but his poked effort is straight at the goalkeeper. Betis are finding plenty of space down Chelsea's right, and Ezzalzouli's low cross is straight at Jorgensen. Malo Gusto is tucking into midfield positions with Chalobah spreading across into a wide position. Madueke is playing on the left with Neto on the right. Real Betis have looked quite solid so far. The Conference League was not designed for teams of their stature, and in truth it has been too easy to be truly engaging. In their semi-final against Djurgardens, for example, Stamford Bridge was not even close to being full. But that all changes here in Wroclaw: Betis are a proper team. They finished sixth in La Liga and have plenty of players with Premier League experience. It is not a huge surprise that Reece James has been left out of Chelsea's lineup tonight, which in itself is an indication of quite how far he has fallen over the past few years. James is fit and ready to go, but he has still been overlooked for a game of such significance. The club captain is simply not part of Enzo Maresca's starting lineup. One wonders how sustainable this situation might be in the long-term, but those are questions for later. Tonight, Chelsea have a final to win. Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly believes that players' injuries are increasing because of the tight football calendar. PHOTO: AFP DOHA – Todd Boehly, who is the co-owner of English Premier League club Chelsea, expressed concern about the footballing calendar by saying that players' injuries are increasing. The situation is nothing new but the American is the latest to comment on the difficulties that clubs and players face. 'The challenge we really have is how many matches these guys are playing,' he said on May 20 in Doha at the Qatar Economic Forum. 'The calendar's really tight and they put in so much effort and energy, and the injuries are continuing to go up and up and up.' He spoke on the eve of his team traveling to the US for the newly-expanded Club World Cup. 'We're going to have to revisit what the calendar looks like and how much football they can actually play,' he added. The Club World Cup, organised by Fifa, has been criticised by players' representatives, who have also voiced concern about injuries. The tournament's prize money is set at US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion) and Chelsea will get a share of that for competing, but player welfare is a major worry. In the past, organisations such as Uefa, the European organiser of competitions such as the Champions League, have broached the possibility of scrapping the League Cup in England, or at least exempting top teams to reduce their fixtures. Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League with one game to go this season. They are aiming for a top-five position, which would give the club a financial boost because it would mean a place in the Champions League, Europe's main club competition, in 2025-26. Boehly, who was part of a consortium that took Chelsea over from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2022, said overseeing the club was both fun and a headache. 'If people didn't care it would stink, so it's a testament to how much the sport matters,' he said. 'To be part of that is a privilege.' He was asked whether he wanted to increase his role at Chelsea, following a couple of seasons in which he has stepped back from pole position, with one of his co-owners, Behdhad Egbhali, becoming more prominent. 'My role? I think chairman's a pretty good one,' Boehly said. He added he felt that Chelsea, which is grappling with a redevelopment of its 40,000-capacity stadium in west London, needed a 65,000-seat stadium to compete with rivals. Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly sends message to Arsenal over Andrey Santos deal
Todd Boehly appears to have ruled out a summer move for Andrey Santos, insisting Chelsea are 'really excited' about what the midfielder can add to Enzo Maresca's squad. Chelsea signed Santos, 21, from Vasco da Gama in January 2023 before immediately loaning the youngster back to the Brazilian outfit for the remainder of the season. Santos went on to join Nottingham Forest on a temporary basis the following summer, but made just two first-team appearances across a disappointing five-month spell at the City Ground. However, over the last season-and-a-half, Santos has managed to get his career back on track in French football on loan at Strasbourg – Chelsea's sister club, also owned by Boehly's BlueCo consortium. While Strasbourg narrowly missed out on European football on the final day of the Ligue 1 season, Santos earned himself plenty of admirers across an eye-catching campaign, racking up ten goals and three assists for Liam Rosenior's men. Rosenior had been keen to keep hold of Santos beyond the summer, while recent reports claimed Arsenal and PSG were both 'working hard' to lure the Brazil international away from Stamford Bridge. But speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum on Tuesday, Chelsea co-owner Boehly confirmed Santos remained central to Maresca's plans and would be joining up with the rest of the squad for the upcoming Club World Cup. 'We're going to the Club World Cup so, right now, we're laser-focused on the Club World Cup,' Boehly said. 'We have some players that are joining us for the Club World Cup that weren't on the team. 'Andrey Santos is coming from Strasbourg. We're really excited about him and what we think he can add to the squad.' The calendar is really tight, they put in so much effort and energy and the injuries are continuing to go up and up and up. 'We're going to have to revisit what the calendar looks like and how much football they can actually play. 'Obviously, they're built to play football, they love playing football, so we're trying to find the balance of what's the right amount of football.' According to Boehly, Chelsea will continue their efforts to 'build the best portfolio of players' possible when the transfer window opens for business. Asked if Chelsea are likely to spend big in the summer market, he replied: 'Listen, I think we've done most of our investing. 'We're not looking at it as a spend, we're looking at it as an investment and we're trying to build the best portfolio of players that can perform at the highest level, for the longest periods of time. 'I think there's going to be a lot of investment in this window… just what I'm hearing, what we're feeling, so there's going to be lot of well-heeled clubs looking to add to their teams and that's only good for the Premier League.' Boehly is 'excited' about the future at Stamford Bridge, encouraging fans to be patient for success while Chelsea grapple for 'stability'. 'We're excited about what the future holds. We think we've got one of the best young teams,' he went on. 'We were, early on, doing seven, eight, nine-year contracts, because we really wanted to make sure that we could keep the team together for a long time. 'If you read a book called The Captain Class, it talks about the 15 best teams in the world and I think one of the things you see is that in order to have a really good team, you ultimately need stability within the team, within the environment. A 1-0 win over Manchester United last Friday saw Chelsea rise to fourth in the Premier League table heading into what promises to be an intriguing final day of action. Given their far superior goal difference to Aston Villa, the Blues know they will qualify for next year's Champions League with victory at Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Chelsea owner Boehly pulls out of move to buy Scotsman owner National World
Chelsea FC owner Todd Boehly's investment vehicle has backed out of a potential deal to buy newspaper group National World. Mr Boehly's Eldridge Media Holdings (EMH) business said in March that it was considering a takeover deal for the Scotsman and Yorkshire Post owner. However, shortly before a regulatory deadline on Thursday evening, his firm confirmed it has now withdrawn from the process. 'EMH confirms that, following careful consideration, it does not intend to make an offer for National World,' the group told the stock market. The announcement appears to clear the way for Media Concierge, a major shareholder in National World, to buy the business. Eldridge's interest came only a week after Media Concierge, which runs a raft of local newspapers in Ireland as well as direct mail and advertising operations, had secured approval for a £65.1 million takeover of National World. Shareholders had voted in favour of the process before Mr Boehly indicated he could put forward a rival proposal. The withdrawal also raises questions over Mr Boehly's recent pursuit of the Telegraph newspaper group. Eldridge reportedly held talks with National World executive chairman, and former Mirror Group boss, David Montgomery, over a move to buy the Telegraph and combine it with National World. Abu Dhabi-based RedBird IMI has been trying to sell the Telegraph Media Group business after its original takeover of the firm was blocked by UK legislators. In October, the seller announced that owner of The New York Sun, Dovid Efune, entered exclusive talks to buy the Telegraph in a deal worth around £550 million. However, RedBird IMI is understood to now be considering a variety of potential deals, including Mr Efune, amid difficulties from the proposed buyer to secure financing quickly.
