Security forces acting on intelligence raided a militant hideout in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, triggering a shootout that left two police officers and four Pakistani Taliban fighters dead, police said Thursday (May 29).
The rare overnight raid was carried out in Rawalakot district, according to Abdul Jabbar, the police chief of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The region is divided between Pakistan and India and claimed in its entirety by both countries.
Jabbar said the militants killed were members of the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, allies of the Afghan Taliban. He alleged the TTP is acting as a proxy for India, and said the police had thwarted an attempt by the insurgents to establish a base for future attacks.

Operations against TTP hideouts are frequently conducted by Pakistani security forces in the country's restive northwest and elsewhere; however, similar actions in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir remain uncommon. The TTP is a distinct militant group that has become increasingly bold since the Afghan Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021.
Since then, many TTP leaders and fighters have reportedly found refuge in Afghanistan.
Pakistan-Taliban relations
Pakistan's relationship with the Taliban is complicated, marked by periods of strategic cooperation as well as significant tension and conflict.
Initially, Pakistan supported the Taliban in Afghanistan during the 1990s as part of its regional strategy, aiming to establish influence in Kabul and secure strategic depth against India. Pakistan's intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was instrumental in supporting Taliban factions against rival Afghan groups during the Afghan civil war following the Soviet withdrawal.
However, Pakistan's relationship with the TTP is very different now, and marked by hostility. Formed in 2007, the TTP emerged as a militant group opposing the Pakistani government, aiming to implement its strict interpretation of Islamic law and challenging state authority.
TTP has orchestrated numerous deadly attacks across Pakistan, including assaults on military installations, civilian targets, and educational institutions. Pakistan has conducted several major military operations against TTP strongholds, particularly in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), significantly weakening but never completely dismantling the group.
The Afghan Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021 further complicated things. While Islamabad initially welcomed the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, hoping it would stabilise the region, the opposite happened: the TTP has been emboldened, finding safe havens and renewed support networks across the Afghan border. This development has intensified Pakistan's domestic security challenges.

Pakistan now finds itself urging Taliban to curb TTP activities, and carrying out domestic military operations against resurgent TTP fighters.

Nashik's Deolali Camp police register case against dismissed soldier for abetting mutiny

Nashik: The Deolali Camp police have filed charges under section 159 of the BNS against former soldier Chandu Chavan from Dhule for abetting mutiny. Additional charges have been levied against him under BNS sections 353(1)(A), 161, 163, and 168, based on a formal complaint. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now These sections address statements intended to incite mutiny, abetment of assault on superior officers, encouraging desertion, and unauthorised use of military attire. In 2016, Chavan had crossed the Line of Control and remained in Pakistani custody for four months. His subsequent conduct, deemed unsuitable for a serviceman, led to his dismissal from the armed forces. A junior commissioned officer stationed in Nashik lodged the complaint, citing Chavan's YouTube videos containing incorrect and misleading information aimed at inciting mutiny. Despite his dismissal, Chavan continues wearing govt uniform. The complainant referenced specific videos where Chavan makes unfounded accusations against military officers and discourages the youth from joining defence services. Authorities said Chavan has been spotted in various cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Lucknow, wearing military-style attire with a banner while begging on the streets, allegedly spreading misinformation to gain public sympathy. Senior inspector Jayant Shirsath, of the Deolali Camp police station, confirmed that efforts are on to locate and apprehend the accused in connection with the registered case.

NIA detains guard at Topsia hotel in espionage probe

1 2 Kolkata: The NIA, probing the network involved in espionage across the country, detained a security guard of a hotel in Topsia on Saturday. The officers are trying to determine if the guard shared classified information with agencies or persons outside India. The agency on Saturday carried out searches of multiple premises at Park Circus, Kidderpore and Alipore. The security guard reportedly had been working at the hotel for a little over a month. "He had been working here in place of another security guard. They are recruited by the security agency we have tied up with. The agency decides the deployment of guards and fixes their rosters," said an employee of the hotel. The agency officers also visited the office of a travel agency in Kidderpore. At the Topsia hotel, officers first questioned the security guard and then, took him to their New Town office for further interrogation. The agency had earlier arrested a CRPF personnel, Moti Ram Jat, for allegedly sharing classified information with Pakistani agents in exchange for money.
