Sean ‘Diddy' Combs denied release from jail to await sentencing

He was acquitted last month of the top charges – racketeering and sex trafficking – while being convicted of two counts of a prostitution-related offence.
The conviction carries the potential for up to 10 years in prison. But there are complicated federal guidelines for calculating sentences in any given case, and prosecutors and Combs' lawyers disagree substantially on how the guidelines come out for his case.
The guidelines are not mandatory, and Judge Arun Subramanian will have wide latitude in deciding Combs' punishment.
The Bad Boy Records founder, now 55, was for decades a huge figure in pop culture. A Grammy-winning hip hop artist and entrepreneur with a flair for finding and launching big talents, he presided over a business empire that ranged from fashion to reality TV.
Prosecutors claimed he used his fame, wealth and violence to force and manipulate two now-ex-girlfriends into days-long, drugged-up sexual performances he called 'freak-offs' or 'hotel nights'.
His lawyers argued that the government tried to criminalise consensual, if unconventional, sexual tastes that played out in complicated relationships. The defence acknowledged that Combs had violent outbursts but said nothing he did came amounted to the crimes with which he was charged.
Since the verdict, his lawyers have repeatedly renewed their efforts to get him out on bail until his sentencing, set for October.
They have argued that the acquittals undercut the rationale for holding him, and they have pointed to other people who were released before sentencing on similar convictions.
Defence lawyer Marc Agnifilo suggested in a court filing that Combs was the United States' 'only person in jail for hiring adult male escorts for him and his girlfriend'.
The defence's most recent proposal included a 50 million-dollar (£37.6 million) bond and travel restrictions and expressed openness to adding on house arrest at his Miami home, electronic monitoring, private security guards and other requirements.
Prosecutors opposed releasing Combs. They wrote that his 'extensive history of violence — and his continued attempt to minimise his recent violent conduct – demonstrates his dangerousness and that he is not amendable to supervision'.

Pop star Lizzo talks about her weight loss and says she likes how she looks now

Pop star Lizzo talks about her weight loss and says she likes how she looks now Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, 37, the singer is best known for her breakout song Juice which made her synonymous with body positivity, confidence and self-love. Lizzo has opened up over her nearly 27kg weight loss admitting "I still think I'm big" (Image: Raymond Hall/GC Images) Pop star Lizzo has talked about her weight loss, saying she still thinks she is "big" but that she likes how she looks now. ‌ Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, 37, the singer is best known for her breakout song Juice which made her synonymous with body positivity, confidence and self-love. ‌ Despite her musicality and Grammy-award winning music, her weight has always been a point of discussion. ‌ Speaking to Women's Health UK, the singer opened up about how she feels about her body now. She said: "I like how I look now. I still think I'm big. I'm still wearing plus-size clothing. I have the same rolls. I got the same belly, the same thighs – I think I'm just a smaller version. "Body positivity has nothing to do with staying the same. Body positivity is the radical act of daring to exist loudly and proudly in a society that told you you shouldn't exist." ‌ "Me saying I love myself in 2016 was offensive to people... How dare you love yourself! You are fat and black and you're a woman, so you shouldn't love yourself... I had to fight for that (to love myself). "And now I'm fighting again... It's OK to release weight. It's OK to gain weight after you've released weight, because what you're not going to do is shame me if my body changes again and I get bigger." She also spoke about her struggles with binge eating, adding that she has now found a "beautiful balance" with food. ‌ She said: "There were times when I would eat so much that my stomach hurt. When I was done, I would be so uncomfortable, I couldn't breathe and wouldn't let anyone know. I would hide it. "I had so much food noise and connected so much emotion to food. If I was sad, anxious, stressed or working a lot, I would snack and just eat constantly. "I'm so proud of myself for overcoming that." ‌ This comes after the singer and her production company faced a lawsuit from three of her former dancers in August 2023, accusing her of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. At the time, the pop singer described the allegations as "gut-wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing", saying the claims are "as unbelievable as they sound". In September 2023, similar allegations were made against Lizzo by stylist Asha Daniels who alleged she was subject to racial and sexual harassment and a hostile work environment while on tour with Lizzo. ‌ A US judge dismissed the specific allegations against Lizzo. In December 2024, during her first interview on the matter, she said on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast that the sexual harassment allegation "upsets me the most", but called the claims "silly" and "ridiculous". "I was literally living in my dream and then the tour ended, and three dancers just completely blindsided me with a lawsuit," she said. Article continues below Lawyer Ron Zambrano said in a statement to the PA news agency at the time: "Following up on reporting about comments Lizzo made on a podcast appearance regarding being dismissed from a lawsuit, we just wanted to clarify that Lizzo remains a defendant in the harassment lawsuit filed by dancers Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez." The full interview can be read in the September issue of Women's Health UK, out now.

Mariah Carey: The people were ‘amazing' at Brighton Pride show

The five-time Grammy winner, who has sold more than 220 million albums worldwide, took to the stage in Preston Park on Saturday as the headline act at Brighton And Hove Pride. She told the Scott Mills Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2: 'I loved it. The people were amazing, and just being there amongst friends was really nice.' A post shared by BBC Radio 2 (@bbcradio2) Carey, 56, appeared sporting a sparkling pink, blue and silver dress and matching jacket, matching the colours of the transgender flag, with 'protect the dolls' on the back. Speaking about her connection to the LGBT+ community, she said: 'I feel like there's a mutual love between us. 'I kind of grew up in a situation where my mother had two friends, and they were my guncles (gay uncles), and nobody else in school had guncles or anybody, or if they did, they didn't talk about like the gay members of their family. 'So, I would put on plays for my guncles and do all this stuff. And, I think it was a thing that helped me in my life, being around people, all different people.' A post shared by BBC Radio 2 (@bbcradio2) The pop star, who releases her new album in September, also revealed that she has woken up to a full face of makeup, while on a plane. After Mills told her of a singer who had their makeup done in their sleep, she said: 'That makes sense, and I have done that before when I'm sleeping on a plane and I was laying back and we were going from country to country, and my makeup artist, Kristofer Buckle, he would just do my face, and I would just be laying there.' Asked if she woke up to 'full glam and hair', she said: 'Yep, hair too, because the hairdresser was there.' The singer recently made headlines for saying ageing 'just doesn't happen' to her as she refuses to acknowledge the passing of time in an interview with Harper's Bazaar UK. Since her career began in the late 1980s, Carey has had three UK number one singles and two UK number one albums. She is perhaps best known for her evergreen festive track, All I Want For Christmas Is You.
