Malaysia implements AI technology in road management, says Nanta

KUALA LUMPUR (May 28): Malaysia continues to move forward in enhancing its road management by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology, thus increasing the efficiency, safety and effectiveness of road and infrastructure management.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said Malaysia is not only an observer of such technology but is currently among the countries implementing AI technology in road management.
'Through smart monitoring technologies like drones, sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT), we can detect road damage in real time. AI helps us analyse this data to identify locations that need immediate attention and to predict potential future damage
He said this when making a presentation on 'Malaysia's Future-Ready, Hyper-Connected Cities: Policies, Progress and the Path Ahead' at the 2025 Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Asia Pacific Forum in Suwon, South Korea today.
Nanta also shared the strategic direction of the Ministry of Works through the Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030, which is driven by the vision to build safer, more connected and sustainable national mobility.
'The ITS is currently a basic requirement in the construction of future cities that are resilient, efficient and sustainable. The Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030 being developed will be our main guide in transforming the country's ITS landscape,' he said.
He added that five core policy pillars would be the backbone of the implementation of the plan, namely hyperconnected transportation through seamless smart mobility, a pathway towards green and sustainable mobility, strengthened public services through the digitalisation of transportation, a safe and secure transport ecosystem and the use of data for mobility and transportation planning.
'All these plans can be translated into action. Malaysia will continue to innovate, invest and collaborate to build a country that is hyperconnected,' he said.
Nanta said many exciting revolutions are happening in the ITS landscape in Malaysia, including advancements in autonomous vehicles (AV), the use of electric vehicles in public transport, the introduction of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system and the establishment of the National Intelligent Traffic Management Centre (NITMC).

Manalo said this mechanism will provide a platform for the Philippines and the EU to discuss security- and defence-related issues with more depth and regularity. "As like-minded partners committed to a rules-based international order, we hope that through the security and defence dialogue, we will remain proactive and united in addressing emerging security threats and challenges that transcend borders,' said Manalo. Kallas said the dialogue will allow exchange of expertise and explore possible joint initiatives on security and defence "that contribute to regional as well as global security.' "Our work will be comprehensive and will include maritime security, cyber security, foreign information manipulation and interference, counterterrorism, crisis response, and more,' she said. The two top diplomats said this new dialogue marks another milestone in Philippine-EU relations, which Kallas said is growing on a "positive trajectory.' US policy shift an opportunity to explore education elsewhere
LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that policy and systemic changes in the United States (US), including in the education sector, should be viewed as opportunities to explore the advantages of education in other countries. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said this includes exploring new opportunities in the United Kingdom (UK), which has long established educational cooperation with Malaysia. 'We know that MARA (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) has decided to stop sending its sponsored students to the US. My approach is this: when there is a threat, there is always an opportunity. We have to look at the other side of the coin. 'In situations like this, I believe the UK education system, which we are familiar with, can be put to good use,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Committee chairman, said this during a press conference after chairing a meeting with the Malaysian delegation in conjunction with his four-day working visit to the UK starting today. Yesterday, MARA chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that MARA will stop sending its sponsored students to the US starting this year, following the introduction of new policies and directives under President Donald Trump. Previously, the Trump administration issued an order to halt the processing of all foreign student visas and was reportedly considering screening new applicants based on their social media posts. Ahmad Zahid also said he would use his working visit to broaden cooperation in the field of TVET, particularly in exploring new areas such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics and green energy in collaboration with UK universities. 'There are many new technology sectors, especially in green energy, that have already been implemented here and from which we can learn. We hope programmes like 'training the trainers' (ToT), for example, will bear fruit once they have undergone courses here,' he said. Among the key items on Ahmad Zahid's itinerary in the UK are meetings with representatives of leading institutions such as University College London, delivering a public lecture on Malaysia's TVET direction and engaging with MARA-sponsored students.

Putra Heights inferno: Victims seek extension of temporary aids
Houses and cars destroyed by the gas pipeline inferno at Putra Heights. – CHAN TAK KONG/The Star PETALING JAYA: Victims affected by the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights are hoping the temporary aids be extended, as some has recently expired. This includes aids for rental homes, cars and motorcycles provided by various parties. Two months after the incident on April 1, some victims are now in a tight spot as they are required to return the aid. Mohamad Nasir Ab Hamid, 69, a resident of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru said his family is currently staying in a small house near their original home with rental support for three months while waiting for their house to be repaired. "My house was deemed a total loss, with an estimated repair cost of RM150,000, but to this day, the appointed contractor has yet to begin work,' he told Bernama on Monday (June 2). Mohamad Nasir said he understands that it will take time, as many other homes were also destroyed in the incident. "When the contractor starts the repairs, I want to see how they will go about it. We've yet to be informed how the process will be carried out,' he said. Mohamad Nasir said the temporary vehicle he received after the incident was returned last month when the loan period ended. "We're not looking for luxury - just a car that can serve our everyday needs,' said the father of nine. His wife, Aliyah Ismail, 55, said she was grateful for the assistance received but hoped that cash compensation would also be provided to help victims, especially those left homeless. Previously a catering business operator, she now sells traditional cakes and snacks, earning between RM20 and RM30 a day, in addition to financial support from her children. Aliyah said so far, her family has only been informed of assistance for home repairs. "As of now, we haven't heard anything about compensation - only about home repairs. Compensation should be given. We have no money, no income. Rental is expensive. "Goods are expensive too, and to restart my catering business, I need to buy a lot of supplies and equipment because everything was destroyed in the fire,' she said. The gas pipeline inferno on April 1 saw flames reaching over 30m high, with temperatures soaring to 1,000 degrees Celsius. It took nearly eight hours to fully extinguish the blaze. Eighty-one homes were completely destroyed with structural damage exceeding 40 per cent, another 81 were partially damaged, 57 were affected by heat but not burned, while 218 homes remained unscathed. — Bernama
