Cummins claims 300th Test wicket at Lord's in WTC final

London, Jun 12 (UNI) Australia captain Pat Cummins on Thursday became the eighth Australian and 22nd bowler overall to claim 300 Test wickets, as he led a devastating bowling performance against South Africa on the second day of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord's.
Cummins' extraordinary 6 for 28 — the best bowling figures by a Test captain at Lord's — dismantled South Africa's batting order and handed Australia a crucial first-innings lead in the high-stakes encounter.
In a remarkable statistical milestone, the match also saw history being created as Cummins joined Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon to form the first-ever Test bowling attack featuring three players with 300 or more wickets. Josh Hazlewood, who missed the mark narrowly, sits on 280.
Speaking to the host broadcaster at the innings break, Cummins said, "It's great, and I've got some family here which is nice. They were batting pretty well so happy we've got a decent lead this first innings. For any fast bowler 300 is a big number, means you've battled a few injuries and niggles, got through it and played well in different conditions."
Cummins, who had struck on the first evening by removing Wiaan Mulder, returned on Thursday to claim five more wickets. He broke the resistance in the morning by dismissing Temba Bavuma and then produced a fiery post-lunch spell of 4.1-4-4, running through the South African lower order.
His victims included Kyle Verreynne (lbw), Marco Jansen (caught off a leading edge), David Bedingham (outside edge), and finally Kagiso Rabada — brilliantly caught at deep square leg — which sealed his 300th wicket.
With this feat, Cummins now holds the fourth-best strike rate among bowlers with over 300 Test wickets, trailing only Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, and Waqar Younis. He has now taken 79 wickets at an average of 23.03 in this WTC cycle. UNI BDN SSP

Shubman Gill Overtakes Virat Kohli On India's ‘THIS' WTC Records During 5th Test At Oval

Shubman Gill continues to stamp his authority on the Test arena, surpassing former captain Virat Kohli on India's World Test Championship (WTC) run-scorers list. The milestone came during the ongoing fifth Test at The Oval, further underlining Gill's remarkable form in the England series. Most runs for India in the World Test Championship 2731 - Rishabh Pant (67 innings) 2716 - Rohit Sharma (69 innings) 2636 - Shubman Gill (68 innings) 2617 - Virat Kohli (79 innings) 2348 - Ravindra Jadeja (67 innings) Dominating the England Series Gill's performances in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy 2025 have been nothing short of extraordinary: Scored over 722 runs in the series so far, with an astonishing average close to 90. Registered four centuries, including a record-breaking match haul of 430 runs at Edgbaston, making him only the second captain after Allan Border to score 150+ in both innings of a Test. Surpassed Virat Kohli's tally for most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series against England, a record previously held by Kohli since 2016. His purple patch has seen him join legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Don Bradman, equaling their record of four centuries in a single series. Impact Beyond the Numbers Gill's form has had a defining impact on the series. Alongside senior batter KL Rahul, who also crossed 500 runs in the series, the duo became the first Indian pair in more than 50 years to achieve the milestone in an away Test series. While bowlers have struggled in batting-friendly conditions, Gill's consistency has kept India competitive. In the ongoing fifth Test at The Oval, India reached 204/6 on Day 1, with Gill contributing 21 before being run out in a tense passage of play. A New Era of Indian Batting Leadership By overtaking Virat Kohli on the WTC runs chart, Shubman Gill has firmly established himself as the torchbearer of India's batting unit. His ability to adapt in challenging conditions and lead from the front with the bat has drawn comparisons with some of India's finest captains. As India pushes to level the series, Gill's performances will remain central to their fortunes. His record-breaking spree in England has not only etched his name in history books but has also signaled the dawn of a new era in Indian cricket.

Last Updated: In nine innings of the ongoing five-match Test series, Indian players have scored a total of 3413 runs. The fifth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England is taking place at The Oval in London. After being invited to bat first by English captain Ollie Pope on Thursday (July 31), the Shubman Gill-led Indian team could only manage to score a total of 224 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 69.4 overs. The total of 224 is India's lowest score in the ongoing series, but it helped India join Australia and England in an elite list. The total of 224 in the first innings of The Oval Test has taken India's tally of runs to 3413 in the ongoing series. This is the first time in the history of Test cricket that an Indian team has managed to score more than 3400 runs in a Test series. India's previous highest total in a Test series was 3270 runs against the West Indies during the six-match series played in India in 1978-79 under Sunil Gavaskar's leadership. In that home series, Gavaskar amassed a total of 732 runs for the Indian team in six matches, and in the ongoing series, Captain Gill has scored a total of 743 runs so far. In the past, on six occasions, the Australian team has managed to score more than 3400 runs in a Test series, whereas England has crossed the 3400-run mark four times. Shubman Gill is India's top run getter in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. In nine innings, with the help of four centuries, the 25-year-old batter from Punjab has amassed a total of 743 runs. He is followed by KL Rahul, who has added 525 runs to India's total so far, and Rishabh Pant is third on the list with 479 runs in seven innings of four matches. In the second Test of the ongoing series, which was played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 2 to 6, India scored a total of 1014 runs. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
