"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" holds its lead atop the box office
LOS ANGELES -- LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marvel's first family stumbled in theaters in its second weekend, but still held on to the top spot at the box office. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' earned $40 million from 4,125 North American theaters, a 66% drop from a healthy $117.6 million debut. The film was accompanied by comedies 'The Bad Guys 2' and 'The Naked Gun" in the top three box office rankings. The superhero movie dipped significantly more than Marvel's previous film, 'Thunderbolts,' which took a 55% dive in its second weekend. 'First Steps' is the last major blockbuster of the summer. It added nearly $40 million internationally in its second weekend, bringing thefilm's global total to $369 million. The movie's box office drop off was surprising given its strong reviews, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore. Though the movie's debut weekend may have given box office results a strong push toward the $4 billion summer benchmark, August is off to a slow start, he said. 'It's a tough lift, but we might be able to get there. It really means that all the films are gonna have to stand on their own,' Dergarabedian said. 'It's gonna be about getting great reviews, having that staying power, that longevity in the marketplace.' Newcomer comedy 'The Bad Guys 2' earned second place at the box office this weekend, with $22 million from 3,852 North American theaters. That was on par with projections and also in line with the first movie in the series, which brought in $23 million in 2022. Paramount's slapstick comedy, 'The Naked Gun,' also in its debut weekend, snagged the third box office spot, earning $17 million from 3,344 locations. Jim Orr, president of domestic distribution for Universal Pictures, said the solid debut for 'The Bad Guys 2,' coupled with strong audience reaction scores, 'should point to a very long, very successful run through not only the rest of the summer, but really, I think into the fall." James Gunn's 'Superman,' which opened four weekends ago and already crossed $550 million globally, earned $13.8 million domestically this weekend, taking the fourth spot. 'Jurassic World Rebirth' followed with $8.7 million. The horror movie 'Together' had a strong debut weekend, coming in at sixth place and earning $6.8 million domestically, proof that August is a month for edgier and off-beat films, Dergarabedian said. 'That's what this month is about. It's not just about box office," Dergarabedian said. "It's also about providing really interesting, rewarding movie-going experiences for audiences.' Dergarabedian said he expects highly-anticipated movies hitting theaters in the next few weeks — including 'Freakier Friday,' and Zach Cregger's horror movie 'Weapons' — to give August a needed boost. The box office is currently up 9.5% from last year. With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Pedro Pascal's Fantastic Four: First Steps is the No. 1 movie in North America again, earning an additional $40 million in receipts in its second weekend, announced Sunday. Coming in at No. 2 is The Bad Guys 2 with $22.2 million, followed by The Naked Gun at No. 3 with $17 million, Superman at No. 4 at $13.9 million and Jurassic World: Rebirth at No. 5 with $8.7 million. Rounding out the top tier are Together with $6.8 million, F1 at No. 7 with $4.1 million, I Know What You Did Last Summer at No. 8 with $2.7 million, Smurfs at No. 9 with $1.8 million and How to Train Your Dragon at No. 10 with $1.4 million.

Surprise MCU Character Return Confirmed For 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'
The Marvel Cinematic Universe consists of numerous recurring characters, though sometimes it may take years for their appearances or setups to pay off, as we've recently seen with the long-awaited return of The Leader in Captain America: Brave New World . Similarly, it looks like another long-awaited MCU character return has finally been confirmed for Spider-Man: Brand New Day . The new Spider-Man movie will be the fourth entry in the MCU's Spider-Man series, also consisting of Spider-Man: Homecoming , Spider-Man: Far From Home , and Spider-Man: No Way Home . The fourth entry, as its very different title suggests, will take a very different direction from those previous installments. It's aiming to tell a lower-scale street-level story, one that will require an appearance from Jon Bernthal's Punisher. Additionally, as shared via THR, it appears another MCU character is confirmed to be joining the mix for the next Spider-Man movie. This one, however, is actually a character that previously appeared in the film series – only for a quick introduction that never seemed to pay off. Until now, that is. It looks like Michael Mando will be reprising his role from the 2017 franchise starter Spider-Man Homecoming , in which he briefly played fan-favorite comic book villain Scorpion. While it seemed likely at the time that Scorpion would appear in a sequel, those plans never seemed to come to fruition with the introduction of larger-scale narratives as we saw in Far From Home and No Way Home . Now, however, it looks like Michael Mando's Scorpion will find himself at the center of Spider-Man: Brand New Day . Additionally, the outlet confirms the return of another fan-favorite MCU character, though this is one role that has fortunately been given plenty of appearances over the years. This time, however, we'll get to see him alongside Tom Holland's Peter Parker and Jon Bernthal's Punisher. Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner aka Hulk is confirmed to be appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day . It's unknown how he'll fit into the story, especially alongside the likes of The Punisher and Scorpion, but the new film is definitely shaping up to be a very different kind of Spider-Ma n story. One that might be one of the closest yet to the classic comics. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
