Red convertible 'sped away' at time of arson

A red BMW convertible was seen speeding from an isolated Southland town at the time of a suspected arson which destroyed a property.
Police today released an image of a similar BMW Z3 after earlier this week saying they were "making progress to an arrest".
The fire gutted an Elswick St house and destroyed two vehicles on the property, about 50km north of Gore, in February 2024.
Detective Sergeant Brian McKinney, of Gore, said police wanted information on the vehicle "which was seen leaving the Waikaia township at speed around the time of the fire".

"On that same night, the vehicle was also observed travelling towards the Riversdale area, again at speed," he said in a statement.
Police wanted to speak to anyone who has information about the vehicle, or one matching the description.
Det Sgt McKinney said police were determined to hold the person responsible accountable, "and while an offender has not been located at this stage, we're making progress to an arrest".
"There are positive leads in our investigation that we are looking into. However we continue to appeal to the public for any information they have on this incident."

Two dead following separate Northland, Waikato crashes

In Northland, emergency services were called to a serious two-vehicle crash on SH1 near Waiomio, south of Kawakawa, shortly after midnight. One person died at the scene. Police said the serious crash unit had examined the site and the highway had since re-opened. At about 7.40am, emergency services were called to another fatal crash on Waikoha Road in Karamu, near Waipā in the Waikato. Police said one man died at the scene, after a vehicle left the road and rolled into a paddock. Investigations into both crashes are ongoing. Councils Condemn Overnight Disruption And Thank Police For Strong Response
Horowhenua District Council and Palmerston North City Council are thanking Police and emergency services for their strong, coordinated response to unlawful gatherings in the region overnight, and are condemning the dangerous behaviour that put the safety of residents at risk. The gatherings involved a large convoy of vehicles and over 1,000 individuals. This follows similar illegal activity in Levin last year that saw State Highway 1 barricaded and weapons reportedly present. This year, Police acted early — deploying teams including Riot Police, Armed Offenders Squad and the Eagle helicopter, implementing a visible and proactive presence across the region. While their efforts successfully prevented major disruption in Levin, the group dispersed north along Tavistock Road and State Highway 57, State Highway 56 and Palmerston North before coming back to Levin. One bystander was taken to hospital with moderate injuries after an incident on SH57, with Police reporting further incidents with other bystanders and vehicles on SH56. No police are reported to be injured despite, having a vehicle deliberately rammed, Police car tyres slashed and fireworks being aimed at officers. 10 arrests have been made so far, with more to come as Police investigate footage from the evening. Mayor Bernie Wanden said the behaviour witnessed last night is disgraceful. 'This activity isn't just reckless — it's dangerous. People have been hurt. Most of the individuals involved are not from Horowhenua, yet it's our community that bears the burden. I commend Police and emergency services for their quick and decisive actions. Their efforts have helped to keep our residents safe and prevent further harm.' Mayor Grant Smith says street racing is completely unacceptable. 'It was great to see the significant police presence in Horowhenua and Palmerston North overnight to help demonstrate that street racing is not welcome in our city or our wider region. While those involved may think it's just a bit of fun, it is intimidating behaviour for communities. In past events, these incidents have also passed on large costs to ratepayers to repair damaged roads and clean up broken glass and car parts. We understand from the Police that a number of youths were involved in what occurred last night. We encourage parents to chat to their young people about the dangers of street racing and encourage them to ask questions when their teens are going out late at night about their plans. I want to thank the Police for their efforts last night and hope those involved get the message that street racing is simply not welcome in our region' Both Councils are continuing to liaise with Police to monitor the situation and support any required responses. Our thoughts are also with those injured last night, and their loved ones.

Operation Purple - Anti-Social Road User Gathering In Levin
Inspector Ash Gurney, Manawatū Area Prevention Manager: Ten people were arrested during a large anti-social road user event in the Levin and Palmerston North areas overnight, which saw five members of the public and two Police officers injured. Police were out on the streets overnight with plans in place to keep the gathering in check, including air support from the Police Eagle helicopter, however faced physical attacks on the ground from those present. A crowd of around 1000 people gathered in Levin late last night, many performing burnouts and other driving offences. Fireworks, physical aggression, and a vehicle were all used against Police who were attempting to break up the gathering. Two Police officers received minor injuries from the fireworks that did not require hospitalisation. Five people were arrested at this location and will face Levin District Court in coming days, on disorderly behaviour and driving charges. The large group then moved to the State Highway 57/Tavistock Road intersection, where Police were again confronted with more unruly behaviour, including a number of burnouts. A pedestrian bystander was hit by a car doing a burnout. People and vehicles blocking the roads delayed an ambulance getting to this person, forcing Police to employ tactical options - including deploying sponge rounds to disperse the crowd- to allow it through. During this period, several Police vehicle were damaged and had tyres slashed. Police moved this crowd on, which then moved to the intersection of State Highway 56 and Tiakitahuna Road. Further burnouts and unsafe driving took place, and four bystanders – aged 16-20 years old - were hit by cars. One female had both of her legs run over. The group were taken to Palmerston North Hospital for treatment for their injuries. The Police Eagle helicopter assisted staff on the ground in tracking one of the drivers who hit the bystanders. The 18-year-old man was taken into custody after a lengthy foot pursuit by officers, and he is due in Levin District Court on Tuesday on a range of serious charges. Diesel was poured on an intersection in Palmerston North city where the group set up again around 2am – numbers were estimated at around 200 by this stage. The crowd dispersed shortly after the diesel was set alight. Several other instances of single vehicles seen doing skids and burnouts in the Levin area were identified by officers over the next hour or so, with the Police Eagle helicopter proving invaluable in giving officers on the ground relevant information. 'The escalation in the level of violence committed against officers at these events is incredibly reckless and will not be tolerated,' Inspector Gurney says. 'The fact that members of the public were injured should send a strong warning to people intending to take part or observe – this is dangerous and stupid behaviour which can very easily result in multiple serious injuries or even death. 'On this occasion, given the size and unruly nature of the crowds involved, it is fortunate no other people were seriously hurt or worse, and that no Police officers were seriously injured,' Inspector Gurney says. Police intend to hold everyone identified as having committed an offence to account, with the Eagle helicopter proving vital in helping gather relevant information to help us follow up. Officers will have staff deployed from Central District and from Wellington ready to respond to any potential further activity this weekend.
