Euan Van Der Vliet the hero as Jersey Bulls reach play-off final following dramatic penalty shootout

ITV News24-05-2025
Jersey Bulls are into the Combined Counties League Premier South play-off final after a stunning performance from goalkeeper Euan Van der Vliet.
The Bulls were locked at 1-1 with Fleet Town after 90 tense minutes at Springfield, but Van Der Vliet saved all of the visitors' penalties in the shootout to send his team into the final.
His teammates were penalty perfect too, with Paul McKay, Kurtis Guthrie, and Francis Lekimamati all converting from 12 yards to give Bulls a comprehensive 3-0 win on penalties.
Speaking about his heroics, Van Der Vliet, said: "I'm buzzing! Just to get over the line and get to the final is the main thing - we've been through a lot in the last few weeks.
"I'm always quite confident on penalties because the pressure is always on the taker.
"I don't think I've ever saved three in a row! Once I saved the first one, it put more pressure on the second one, and the third one was amazing."
Elliot Powell's side, unsurprisingly, weren't at their usual fluent best having not played for more than a month.
An own goal had given them the lead early in the second half, but Fleet found a leveller three minutes from time, taking the game to penalties.
Elliot Powell said: "I turned to my assistants and said it's been a pretty traumatic end to the season, so why not top it off with a penalty defeat - that was the pessimist in me, but there's no better way of winning it than on penalties."
Jersey Bulls thought they had won promotion from the Combined Counties League, but ended up receiving a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player earlier this season.
Reflecting on a topsy-turvy few weeks, Powell pulled no punches about the saga: "The whole situation is a shambles. The system isn't fit for purpose, there's a systematic breakdown at the FA's end, and there's no accountability from them, so the whole thing is a shambles and a lot of people need to have a look at themselves."
Bulls will now face Cobham FC in the final next week, with the date and time still to be confirmed.

Jersey Bulls boss grateful for stand-in keeper Jinadu

Jersey Bulls manager Elliot Powell says he is grateful to goalkeeper Daniel Jinadu for helping the club in their first-ever game in the Isthmian 23-year-old former West Ham and Barnsley youngster was called into the starting line-up for the 1-1 draw with Margate with less than an hour's registered the goalkeeper, who has played non-league football for Welling United and Dover Athletic, after first-choice goalkeeper Euan van der Vliet was injured on Thursday. "Euan tried it in the warm-up and wasn't fit, so we'd pulled Daniel in at last minute on Friday," Powell told BBC Radio Jersey."We've got our number two keeper at home Pierce (Roche), but Pierce had an important game for St Clement and I think a lot's been said about the relationship between Jersey Bulls and local clubs."It's really important for us that we didn't impact a local club through no fault of their own less than 24 hours before an important game for them and respect the local game as well."Despite meeting his team-mates and coaches for the first time just a few hours before kick-off, Powell said he was impressed by London-based goalkeeper."We brought in Daniel as a cover and credit to him, he doesn't know anyone here, he's never met anyone before he came down today," Powell added."But he was willing to give up his afternoon move things around for us, driven down, turned up, met a bunch of strangers and then 20 minutes into meeting us he's actually starting."I thought he did well, I thought he came and claimed crosses, a little bit of maybe ring rust there a couple of times with the ball dropping and stuff, but I thought he was really good, really composed and brought a sense of calm to a back line that was under siege at times, but stood firm and got us the point in the end."We didn't know what we were going to get as a keeper and I'm very happy with how he's performed."

FA throw club OUT of the FA Cup after ‘ridiculous mistake' leads to clash being postponed

A CLUB have been thrown out of the FA for a "ridiculous mistake". Guernsey FC drew 1-1 with Bedfont Sports Club on Saturday in the extra preliminary round. 2 It was their first competitive match of the 2025-26 season for the Green Lions. And it was also their first FA Cup match for eight years due to financial troubles. But Tuesday's replay in London did not go ahead as planned. That is because Guernsey admitted there had been an error with the registration of one of their players. Initially, the replay was pushed back by a week to get to the bottom of the issue. However, Guernsey have now confirmed they were booted out of this season's FA Cup. A club statement said: "We have just received official confirmation that the club has been removed from this season's competition, and that Bedfont Sports Club FC has been awarded the tie and will progress to the Preliminary Round." Bedfont Sports will host Kingstonian on August 16. But fans could not believe the costly blunder. One said: "Schoolboy error." Another replied: "After all the hype... a real big let down." A third more compassionate supporter added: "Unfortunately, it happens. You can't really blame club admins as all are normally volunteers - it's happened twice to my local club." But a final user wrote: "What a ridiculous mistake to make @GuernseyFC. Obviously haven't learnt anything from watching Jersey's similar mistake last season?" That is in reference to fellow Channel Island side Jersey Bulls being docked three points for fielding a suspended player. The punishment denied Jersey the Combined Counties Premier South league title - but they did still get promoted through the play-offs. The first round proper of this season's FA Cup is on the first weekend of November, with Premier League and Championship clubs entering in the third round in early January. The final takes place at Wembley on May 16, 2026 - with Crystal Palace the current holders after stunning Manchester City in last season's showpiece. 2
