Three unforgettable stays in South Africa

I always make it a point to travel to and immerse myself in these destinations and accommodations before recommending them; after all, nothing compares to firsthand experience. It enables me to share stories and insights directly with clients, enriching their journey before it even begins.
In March, I traveled to South Africa to explore three accommodations that go far beyond just offering a place to sleep.
My first stop was Rovos Rail, a family-owned luxury train company that is based in South Africa but operates routes through several countries, including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia and Tanzania. I embarked on the three-night, four-day journey from Victoria Falls to Pretoria -- a trip that started at the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel right outside the train station.

Onboard, the cabins are comfortable and well appointed, with your choice of a king or two twin beds, a work desk and a private bathroom with a shower. The fare included accommodations, all meals and drinks, room service, laundry, excursions with guides, entrance fees and taxes. Basically, it's an all-inclusive experience, minus entertainment. That's the one area I felt could be enhanced, perhaps with local performances at some of the stops.
One highlight was an early morning game drive in Hwange National Park, where we spotted lions, giraffes, zebras, impalas, baboons and wildebeests. Day three was a more relaxed pace as we took in breathtaking scenery from small villages to majestic mountains and crossed the Tropic of Capricorn, a moment that felt straight out of a movie.
If you're looking to check a luxury train off your bucket list, or a client's list, Rovos Rail is a must.

Next was the Shalati Resort, familiarly known as the "Train on the Bridge," which is suspended over the Sabi River in South Africa's Kruger National Park.

I've experienced few properties like this one. The resort offers two types of accommodations: 24 Carriage Suites onboard the train and seven Bridge House Suites located nearby in a lush garden setting. I stayed in both to get the full experience.
The Carriage Suite was the standout. With large windows overlooking the river, I could watch animals roam from the comfort of my bed or enjoy the view while soaking in a deep bathtub. The train also features a bar and a pool perched on the bridge. Sipping a drink while swimming above the Sabi River was truly magical.
Staying at Shalati includes all meals, house drinks and two daily game drives, one in the early morning and the other in the evening. They offered a different lens on wildlife behavior and were equally memorable.
My final stop was Sanctuary Mandela, a boutique hotel in Johannesburg's Houghton suburb. Formerly the residence of Nelson Mandela after he was released from Robben Island prison, this intimate hotel has only nine rooms, each designed to reflect a part of Mandela's life story.
I stayed in Room 2, named Rolihlahla after his birth name. The energy and legacy of Mandela are felt in every corner of the hotel, which doubles as a living museum, with memorabilia and stories throughout.
The on-site restaurant serves Mandela's favorite meals, prepared by his longtime personal chef, Xoliswa Ndoyiya, who still cooks at the hotel part-time.

Veteran actor Israel Matseke-Zulu calls for normalising celebrating creatives while they are still alive. Everyone was in a celebratory mood at the State Theatre in Pretoria on Thursday as family, fans and creatives celebrated the life of award-winning actor, Presley Chweneyagae. His family said the actor died in the early hours of last Tuesday after struggling to breathe. The memorial service was led by actor and friend Thato Molamu and actress Moshidi Motshegwa, who played his mother on The River, as MCs. Today we are in Pretoria for the second memorial service of the late Tsotsi and The River actor, Presley Chweneyagae. The first memorial service was in North West on Tuesday. #presleychweneyagae — Karisa (@MpumeeMagagula) June 5, 2025 Chweneyagae was just a 19-year-old drama student when he was recruited to join the cast of one of SA's biggest films, Tsotsi, which was released in December 2005. The film went on to win an Oscar in 2006 for the best international feature film. Chweneyagae acted alongside legends such as Terry Pheto, Kenneth Nkosi, Mothusi Magano, Thembi Nyandeni, Israel Matseke-Zulu and Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha, who had been on screen for a long time. Some of the actors who spoke during the memorial service revealed that as much as Chweneyagae was celebrated for being in his first film, it was also their first time being part of a film, although they had been on television for longer than him. Matseke-Zulu, Nkosi and Pheto praised the late The River star for being strong-willed and owning the film as young as he was, with only theatre experience. Pheto described Chweneyagae as powerful, sharp, unapologetic, humorous and generous. 'He was quite young, hungry [for acting] and full of dreams. Yet, there he was; [he] carried the weight of the story with an intensity that left everyone [impressed]. His bravery catapulted him to immeasurable heights. I don't say that lightly, but being part of Tsotsi opened doors that I never knew existed. Terry Pheto 'Almost two decades later, I had the honour to work with him again on iNumber Number: Jozi Gold. This time, as a director-trainee and once again, he was the lead,' said the actress. Nkosi said he met Chweneyagae on the Tsotsi set, which was also his first movie. He said at the time, his ego did not allow him to say that. He said the late Cobrizi actor never had any ego. 'He carried the whole story. I cannot imagine a 19-year-old having to sit and act in one with Jerry Mofokeng or Rapulatana Seiphemo like that. He was young and trusted himself and his instincts. At some point, people from Soweto said: 'tsotsis don't sound like that', but he came with his tsotsi [style] from Mafikeng,' said Nkosi. He passed his condolences to the family and encouraged them to trust in God. Another veteran, Matseke-Zulu, who led the Thuma Mina gospel song before his speech, said celebrating creatives while they were still alive must be normalised. He said festivals should be hosted to honour people who have done well in the world. Phathutshedzo Makwarela, the co-owner of Tshedza Pictures, which is behind The River and Cobrizi, jokingly shared that Chweneyagae made up his lines most of the time. He said the actor interpreted the scripts in ways they could not imagine. Makwarela also shared that he met Chweneyagae at film school and the act was part of Tsotsi then years later, they worked together. Makwarela said when they were developing the script of The River, they struggled with finding the right person to play Cobra, until MultiChoice suggested Chweneyagae – and he fitted the character perfectly. Actors such as Oros Mampofu, Winnie Ntshaba, Warren Masemola, McDonald Ndou, Macks Papo, Rami Chuene and Dineo Langa came to pay their last respects. Chweneyagae will be buried on Saturday. Cathay Pacific's Luxe New Business Class Suite Is Now Available on This North America-to-Asia Route
If you're planning a trip to Hong Kong, get ready: the flight is about to be more comfortable and luxurious than ever before. Cathay Pacific is introducing its new Aria Suite business class, which will be available on selected flights between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) daily starting June 15. This is the third long-haul route for the Aria Suite, which was originally introduced in Hong Kong in October 2024. From now until Oct. 25, Cathay will run 17 non-stop flights between Vancouver and Hong Kong three times a week, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The Aria Suite reimagines the business class cabin to be both stylish and comfortable, with close attention to craftsmanship and design details. It features a more spacious cabin and redesigned wrap-around seats that allow for more privacy, as well as a suite door and sliding partition. Lie-flat beds are outfitted with Rohi's ethically sourced wool for breathable comfort throughout the flight. The Aria Suite also offers wireless phone charging, intuitively designed storage spaces, and artwork that has a connection to Hong Kong. The Aria Suite will be progressively rolled out throughout the year on Cathay's fleet of retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. 'We are proud to continue our commitment to offering an unparalleled level of comfort and convenience by bringing our highly anticipated Aria Suite to our North American customers,' Chris Vanden Hooven, Cathay Pacific Senior Vice President (Americas), said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure . 'Just over 40 years ago, Vancouver was our first long-haul passenger route between North America and Hong Kong. We are thrilled to introduce the Aria Suite to the Americas via Vancouver, further demonstrating the importance of the region to Cathay Pacific.' Last month, Cathay expanded its routes to include a new non-stop flight between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Hong Kong, making it the longest flight in the Cathay network. 'With the recent launch of Cathay Pacific's new route between Dallas Fort Worth and Hong Kong, the first to connect the airline with the southern region of the United States, we're further strengthening our commitment to connecting North America with Hong Kong,' Vanden Hooven said in the statement. 'Our customers will have even more options, with over 110 return passenger flights per week between North America and Hong Kong this summer, ensuring seamless travel and enhanced connectivity for all.'

Three Cape Town restaurants make the World's Best list for 2025
Three Cape Town spots have been named in the top 100 World's Best Restaurant's list, solidifying its reputation as the best South African city to dine in. La Colombe (55), FYN (82) and Salsify (a new entry at 88) all made the list, with La Colombe making it's 6th appearance, and FYN making it's 5th. Each year, the World's 50 Best Restaurants list highlights 50 exceptional dining establishments, accompanied by an extended list ranking restaurants from 51 to 100. Previously, Paternoster restaurant Wolfgat made the cut, peaking at number 50 in 2021. The co-owner of Salsify, Ryan Cole, told News24 Food that the ranking was a result of years of graft from his team. 'It's incredible to be recognised on a world stage, it's a testament to years of commitment and hard work. I don't think you can ever expect something like this.' Salsify also took home the coveted Eat Out Restaurant of the Year award for 2025 in March. Salsify head chef Nina du Toit told News24 Food that their accolades this year were not an overnight success story, but rather 'a culmination of the last six years of consistent hard work and innovation, always pushing to be better'. 'I am so proud of what we have accomplished, it has been a dream to be on the list,' she added.
