Oil tanker market signals more energy disruption ahead

While global energy markets are not yet pricing in worst-case scenarios for the Israel-Iran war, oil tanker rates are providing a good real-time gauge of the escalating risks. Geopolitical risk has spiked following Israel's surprise bombardment of the Islamic republic last Friday and Iran's retaliatory ballistic missile strikes, leading to a rally in global energy prices, with Brent crude rising eight per cent to roughly US$75 a barrel. But markets and investors now appear to be in a holding pattern as the conflict unfolds, with possible scenarios spanning everything from an imminent ceasefire and strengthened nuclear deal to a joint United States-Israel effort to destroy Iran's nuclear programme and potentially bring about regime change. For oil markets, the central risk remains the blocking or disruption of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman through which one-fifth of the world's oil and gas consumption flows. Iranian strikes on energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates — both US allies — would represent another major escalation. Current oil prices suggest the market is still largely discounting such extreme scenarios, but trends in the oil tanker market show that oil shipping activity is being impacted even without direct action by Teheran. The benchmark daily rate for a "very large crude carrier" (VLCC) moving oil from the Middle East to China has risen by 40 per cent since June 13, reflecting the higher risk premium tanker owners are now charging to move through the strait. LSEG shipping market analysts anticipate further rate increases in the coming days. Tanker rates in other regions have also risen. For example, VLCC rates between West Africa and China have also jumped by over 40 per cent since Friday. This is partly due to an expectation that crude buyers will seek to secure supplies from regions outside the Middle East in order to reduce the risk of disruption to their refining or trading operations. In another sign of the conflict's indirect impact on shipping, Qatar's national energy company instructed liquefied natural gas and oil tankers to stay outside Hormuz and to enter the Gulf only the day before loading, Reuters reported. While no physical attacks have occurred in Hormuz, tensions in the Gulf were heightened on Tuesday after two oil tankers collided and caught fire near the Strait of Hormuz. One of the tankers, the Front Eagle, which was destined for China, was loaded with two million barrels of Iraqi crude oil, according to monitoring service The exact cause of the collision, which resulted in no injuries or spills, is still unclear. But it coincided with a surge in electronic interference among commercial ship navigation systems in recent days around Hormuz and the wider Gulf. This electronic disruption was affecting vessels' ability to accurately transmit positional data via automated identification systems (AIS), which posed operational and navigational challenges for maritime traffic, said the US-led Joint Maritime Information Centre in an advisory. The source of the interference, known as jamming, was unclear. LSEG analysts said more than 260 vessels in the Gulf had their AIS positions corrupted at one point in recent days, as they appeared to be "sailing" on the land around the South Pars Central Power Plant in southern Iran. Similar incidents have been recorded in other parts of the world in the past. For example, signal disruptions affecting AIS and GPS signals rose sharply in the Baltic Sea following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The physical oil market, where real-world trade activity overlaps with political and military activity, can often help investors assess risk levels at moments of heightened geopolitical tension. Amid the current fog of war, the tanker market in the Middle East is flashing warning lights.

Astro's 1Q profit falls 21% on lower subscription and ad revenue

ASTRO Malaysia Holdings Bhd saw its net profit decline to RM13.48 million for the first quarter ended April 30, 2025 (1Q25), from RM17.01 million a year earlier, dragged by weaker television subscription and advertising income. Revenue for the quarter slipped to RM703.09 million, down 9% from RM772.53 million in the same period last year, the pay-TV operator said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today. The group attributed the revenue decline to a 6% drop in television subscription revenue and a 13% fall in advertising revenue. Despite the softer top line, Astro said engagement on its platform remained robust, with customers spending 82% of their viewing time on local content, up three percentage points quarter-on-quarter. 'We produce 10,000 hours of new content annually to satisfy this demand, ranging from well-known signatures and dramas to thought-provoking Astro Originals, animation and movies,' it said. The group is also expanding efforts to monetise its intellectual properties (IPs) across multiple platforms — including cinemas, streaming, digital, licensing, advertising, and live experiences — to optimise content returns. However, Astro said content piracy remains its biggest threat and stressed it is continuing efforts to combat illegal streaming. It noted that courts across Malaysia had recently ruled in its favour in a number of piracy-related cases, awarding statutory damages and tougher penalties against illegal streaming device (ISD) sellers and F&B operators streaming its content without permission. 'We will continue to lobby for further regulatory reform and enforcement activity, not just to protect Astro, but to safeguard the future of the Malaysian creative industry,' it said. Astro added that it is maintaining a cautious outlook amid macroeconomic uncertainty, internal reforms and external headwinds, with a continued focus on cost discipline and operational resilience. — TMR

Bursa Malaysia, Grab channel zakat to aid 500 kidney patients

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 500 kidney patients from the asnaf group in the Federal Territories will receive RM300 Grab ride vouchers each to help ease transportation to dialysis treatment centres. The RM150,000 contribution was made through wakalah zakat funds from Bursa Malaysia (RM100,000) and Grab Malaysia (RM50,000), under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of patients who require long-term dialysis treatment. 'With the high cost of transportation, especially for those who need to travel several times a week, this burden can be overwhelming. 'This contribution may not be much, but I hope it can at least help make things easier for the patients so they can focus better on their treatment,' he said at the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ)-MAIWP Ziarah Kasih programme at the Batu Muda MAIWP-PICOMS Haemodialysis Centre here today. Also present were University College of MAIWP International (UCMI) chief executive officer and vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed and Grab Malaysia country operations and mobility director Rashid Shukor. Meanwhile, Fad'l said the wakalah zakat contribution reflected Bursa Malaysia's commitment to supporting initiatives that bring a positive impact to society. 'We believe a company's success is not only measured by financial performance or operational excellence, but also by its contribution to community wellbeing and sustainability practices,' he said. Fad'l added that the collaboration with PPZ-MAIWP was an example of how zakat could be effectively channelled to ease the burden of the underprivileged. He said Bursa Malaysia would continue to play an active role in leveraging zakat as a social finance tool, while encouraging public-listed companies to give back to the community.
