Astro's 1Q profit falls 21% on lower subscription and ad revenue
Revenue for the quarter slipped to RM703.09 million, down 9% from RM772.53 million in the same period last year, the pay-TV operator said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today.
The group attributed the revenue decline to a 6% drop in television subscription revenue and a 13% fall in advertising revenue.
Despite the softer top line, Astro said engagement on its platform remained robust, with customers spending 82% of their viewing time on local content, up three percentage points quarter-on-quarter.
'We produce 10,000 hours of new content annually to satisfy this demand, ranging from well-known signatures and dramas to thought-provoking Astro Originals, animation and movies,' it said.
The group is also expanding efforts to monetise its intellectual properties (IPs) across multiple platforms — including cinemas, streaming, digital, licensing, advertising, and live experiences — to optimise content returns.
However, Astro said content piracy remains its biggest threat and stressed it is continuing efforts to combat illegal streaming. It noted that courts across Malaysia had recently ruled in its favour in a number of piracy-related cases, awarding statutory damages and tougher penalties against illegal streaming device (ISD) sellers and F&B operators streaming its content without permission.
'We will continue to lobby for further regulatory reform and enforcement activity, not just to protect Astro, but to safeguard the future of the Malaysian creative industry,' it said.
Astro added that it is maintaining a cautious outlook amid macroeconomic uncertainty, internal reforms and external headwinds, with a continued focus on cost discipline and operational resilience. — TMR

Bursa Malaysia bucks weaker regional trend, ends firmer on broad-based buying
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia closed higher on broad-based buying, bucking the mostly weaker regional trend weighed down by profit-taking and Wall Street's negative performance. At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 0.33 per cent or 5.28 points to 1,590.24 from 1,584.96 previously. Market breadth was positive, with 503 gainers edging out 490 losers, while 509 counters remained unchanged. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said FBM KLCI continued its upward momentum, climbing to 1,594 before the mid-day recess, then consolidating and hovering near the 1,590 level in the afternoon. He said the index's resilience at higher levels reflects firm domestic sentiment, bolstered by renewed institutional inflows into equities. "Capital flow data indicates that local institutions are rebalancing towards domestic-oriented sectors, with property and consumer counters continuing to attract interest as investors position for resilient household demand and an improving domestic growth cycle," he added.

Star Media swings to loss in Q2 on weaker property revenue
KUALA LUMPUR: Star Media Group Bhd posted a net loss of RM231,000 for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25), compared with a net profit of RM7.49 million a year earlier, dragged by lower property development revenue. Quarterly revenue slipped 31 per cent to RM51.5 million from RM74.1 million in the same period, mainly due to the completion of progress billings from units sold in its Star Business Hub project. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said pre-tax profit fell to RM318,000 from RM7.55 million in the second quarter of 2024. Its print, digital and events segment saw a slight revenue decline of two per cent to RM42.1 million. However, pre-tax profit improved to RM2.7 million from RM1 million a year earlier, supported by better cost control. Radio broadcasting revenue grew two per cent to RM6.4 million, with pre-tax profit rising to RM231,000 versus RM186,000 previously. Property development and investment revenue plunged 83 per cent to RM4.4 million from RM25.6 million, leading to a lower pre-tax profit of RM2.3 million compared with RM10.6 million last year. The company cited changes in United States (US) foreign policy and ongoing geopolitical tensions as challenges weighing on the media industry's outlook for 2025. "The US tariffs war has impacted global trade flows and economic sentiment. These developments will impede economic recovery and increase cost-of-living pressures, thus hindering the industry's prospects," it said. Despite macroeconomic headwinds and industry disruptions, Star Media said it remains confident in its ability to stay resilient and adapt. It added that it will continue providing creative media solutions to clients while maintaining disciplined cost management.
