Local woodworker brings Christmas favorite to life

LISBON, Ohio (WKBN) – It's still seven months until Christmas, but just over a month until Christmas in July. A Lisbon man is preparing for both.
He's halfway through a special project to bring a Christmas favorite to life, and his design is a full-size version of a classic toy with a set of three life-sized nutcrackers.
Jerry Tyson's idea came from a Christmas party where people painted smaller models. He started looking at them and felt he could build them bigger. Each of the woodworking masterpieces is about 6 feet tall.'They were not easy. Each one of these are turned from logs that I physically went and cut down trees and milled each one piece by piece, scaling it up from the model,' Tyson said.
The nutcrackers are multiple pieces, all attached. They're made from pine and poplar. Each one took a week to form and put together, followed by up to four days to paint, which was the easiest part.'My favorite one is Father Christmas, and that's because of what he represents,' Tyson said.
The third nutcracker is Lisbon's favorite legend, Johnny Appleseed. Tyson plays the part during the annual festival, living in a small cabin downtown.
The nutcrackers will be on public display in just a few weeks. 'So, the very first place that I know they're going to is the Columbiana County Fair. They'll be in the art building,' Tyson said.
Johnny Appleseed will join Tyson for the September festival. All three will be in the square for Christmas. Each piece carries his signature. He's a one-of-a-kind artist.
Tyson hopes that in a world of 'Made in China', people understand what it took to put these together and appreciate the work.'There's things that we do that feeds our belly, and then there's things that we do that feeds our soul, and this feeds my soul. Just knowing that you can give something to your community that they could enjoy,' Tyson said.
Tyson's plan calls for adding three more nutcrackers, a female and male elf ( Santa's helpers), plus a wooden boy, which doesn't have all the paint and shows off the character of the wood.

Canfield author publishes new book

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — One Canfield Native is celebrating the release of her new book filled with fantasy, adventure and rock 'n' roll. When Joan Reardon was a kid, her mom would bring her to the Boardman Barnes & Noble, where she gravitated toward fantasy books like 'Harry Potter' and 'Percy Jackson.' 'There has never been a time in my life where I wasn't writing,' Reardon said. 'My parents love to tell a story of when I was a baby and I would just scribble on pieces of paper and stack them on top of each other and say, 'I wrote a book.'' Twenty years later, she returned to that same store to find her own new book, 'Dad Rock Dragon Quest,' on the shelves — right next to the books she once fell in love with. 'It's about a family that's a blended family that goes on an adventure to rescue a dragon from magical poachers,' Reardon said. 'Simultaneously, it also features, you know, a lot of rock and roll, plenty of references to like 'Top Gun' and eighties action movies. So it's kind of a story for the whole family.' This is Reardon's second book to be published and sold in thousands of stores across the country, but it holds a special place in her heart. She says many aspects of the story are based on her husband, whom she married shortly after finishing the book in 2023. 'We did, I think, one round of edits, and then we sent it out to the publisher, and we didn't hear back for about two months,' Reardon said. 'And then, the night of our rehearsal dinner, we got news that it was going to be published. So two reasons to celebrate.' Reardon wrote the book in between her law school classes, and, over the past year and a half, she has worked with Simon & Schuster publishing company to get ready for the book's grand release, which was on June 3. 'There's a lot of love and work that goes into the book from, you know, dozens of people. And so everyone's very, very excited to finally have it in stores,' Reardon said. So far, the book has already received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and been picked as a gold standard selection from the Junior Library Guild. But she's not stopping there — she's already putting the finishing touches on the first draft of her next book. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Village of Los Ranchos shares potential list of projects for the next five years

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – In Albuquerque's North Valley, the Village of Los Ranchos is trying to figure out how it should prioritize millions of dollars of work over the next few years. The list includes 17 projects, including a lot of road work along Fourth Street and Rio Grande Blvd near Paseo del Norte, but before any decisions they want to hear what neighbors think. Ideas include new sound barriers and better pedestrian crossings near Paseo del Norte, creating new balloon landing zones, and upgrading several basic rough trails. Politicians sink $13M in closed New Mexico tourist attraction 'They're not even, they're not flat, not developed. They're basically informal. Some of those will stay that way, but then there are others where we know we have to have better access for young people who might be wanting to access the schools,' said Village of Los Ranchos Mayor Lawrence Rael. Meanwhile, in some of the public feedback, some say Los Ranchos needs better traffic and noise management. Douglas Cutler agrees, saying he wants to see upgrades on Fourth Street. 'I would like to see focus on Fourth and Osuna in that area. It seems like with all of the new construction there and the new residents in that apartment complex, the streets are not adequate to handle the traffic,' said Douglas Cutler, a Village of Los Ranchos resident. Mayor Lawrence Rael said the Village priorities also include upgrades to Rio Grande Boulevard, where a $15 million project could make a roundabout just south of Paseo. 'There will be some repaving of the whole corridor, I'd like to look at the shoulders a little bit. We have a lot of folks commuting through there with bikes and a lot of folks recreating,' said Mayor Rael. Where was 'No Country for Old Men' filmed in New Mexico? The mayor said their priorities aren't final yet and could change with public feedback. 'It would be really great to have those projects in place and that the Village is thriving and moving forward,' said Mayor Rael. The Village will have one final meeting to discuss the project ideas and take more feedback in less than two weeks on June 24. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
