Engineers unveil radical new freight system that could make diesel trucks obsolete: 'Almost like a mini-airline'
A team of engineers from the University of New South Wales is developing a fleet of drones that can deliver vital supplies to remote areas of Australia. The all-electric fleet would produce zero emissions and be a game-changer for both the population of these remote areas and the environment at large. Countries like Australia have vast swaths of remote land. The population of these remote areas depends on diesel trucks for the delivery of vital materials such as food and medicine. But the emissions from those long deliveries can be detrimental to both the environment and the humans they are serving. Diesel trucks are one of the largest sources of emissions around the globe, contributing to human respiratory illnesses such as asthma and lung disease. They are also detrimental to the environment, as they can degrade crops and soil as well as produce acid rain. To top it all off, they contribute mightily to warming temperatures around the globe. The project is a collaboration between a company called Seaflight Technologies and Macquarie University. Together, they are developing the AURA-E, an electric drone designed for long-range, heavy cargo transport. The ultimate goal of the program is to create a drone that can carry 440-660 pounds over hundreds of kilometers. The leaders of the program believe its benefits will go beyond efficiency and being better for the environment. It should also be a significant source of job growth in the region. This is because the operation of a fleet of drones will require a new generation of aviation professionals and entrepreneurs. With that in mind, the government of Australia awarded the development team half of the program's $3 million budget. This is only the latest use of drone technology to benefit the environment. It has also been used to locate abandoned oil and gas wells. And they are increasingly being deployed to fight deadly and destructive wildfires before they can spread out of control. The heads of the program have big ideas about its potential scope. "If you imagine drones as being almost like a mini-airline, you could have hundreds or even thousands of flights per day," said Graham Doig, the founder of Seaflight Technologies. He was also understandably enthusiastic about the idea of replacing the dirty diesel trucks. "You can start talking about resupplying a community with medical supplies or fresh fruit and vegetables that otherwise would have come from the other side of the country in a diesel-spewing truck. We're taking that off the road, and we're replacing it with near-zero emissions technology that can provide people with goods they need the next day." Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant could safely operate for 20 more years, report says
PG&E could safely operate the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant for another 20 years, according to a safety report released on Thursday. In response to PG&E's application to renew its operating licenses for 20 years, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission reviewed inspections of Units 1 and 2 to evaluate how aging would impact the power plant's 'passive' systems like concrete, wall thickness and electric cabling. According to the report, PG&E's plans and procedures to address aging would meet the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's safety requirements. 'It's a key milestone and step to re-licensing the plant,' PG&E's vice president of nuclear business and technical services Maureen Zawalick said of the report. PG&E applied on Nov. 7, 2023, for a 20-year license renewal to continue operating Units 1 and 2 of the power plant. If the NRC approves the license renewals, Units 1 and 2 would have the option to operate until 2044 and 2045, respectively. But only with the state Legislature's approval. Senate Bill 846 allowed PG&E to keep the power plant running until 2030. Even if PG&E is granted the two license renewals, the state must issue its own approval for the power plant to operate past that year. Zawalick said PG&E stands at the ready to continue providing electricity if the commission and the state allow. The power plant provides the state with nearly 10% of its power, serving about 4 million customers, she said. 'Continuing to operate the plant supports the state's electric reliability and affordability,' she said. 'It also helps, as we've talked about, meeting our aggressive climate goals of the state.' PG&E may refund customers $43 million for unplanned outage at Diablo power plant In a few weeks, the NRC will release the final environmental impact statement for the plant's 20-year license renewal. Then, on July 8, the commission's Advisory Committee of Reactor Safeguards will hold a public hearing at its headquarters in Maryland, where PG&E will present its case for renewing the operating licenses. Zawalick compared the hearing to 'defending our dissertation.' Later this year, the commission is expected to make a decision about the license renewal. PG&E must also get certifications from the California Coastal Commission and the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board to continue operating the power plant, Zawalick said.

The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF Loaded Up on Energy Stocks. Here Are the Top 3.
The Schwab US Dividend Equity ETF uses a fairly complicated selection process when it buys stocks. During the last rebalancing it increased its exposure to energy stocks. 10 stocks we like better than Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF › The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD) is one of the most popular dividend exchange-traded funds (ETFs) you can buy. But this fairly complicated product can also help investors who prefer to buy individual stocks, which is a function of the screening process used. Targeting well-run companies that have high yields, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF's recent rebalancing suggests that energy stocks could be a place for dividend investors to focus on today. Here are three top options from the ETF's portfolio. The 100 stocks within the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF go through a fairly strict screening process. First, only companies that have increased their dividends for at least 10 consecutive years are looked at. (Real estate investment trusts are removed from consideration.) Then a composite score is created for the remaining stocks. The score includes cash flow to total debt, return on equity, dividend yield, and a company's five-year dividend growth rate. The 100 companies with the highest scores are included in the ETF. Without getting too deep into each metric, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is attempting to focus on high-quality businesses that have both growth potential and attractive yields. This is basically what most dividend investors are trying to do when they pick stocks. That makes the ETF's portfolio a great starting point for dividend investors. And right now, after the annual rebalancing of the portfolio, energy stocks appear to be an important focus. This sector makes up 21% of the ETF's assets, which is its largest sector weighting. If you haven't been looking at energy stocks, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity's portfolio suggests you should be. Its top three energy holdings are ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), Chevron (NYSE: CVX), and EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG). Here's a look at each one. ConocoPhillips has a dividend yield of 3.6%. The dividend has been increased annually for eight years. The annualized dividend growth rate over the past five years is an attractive 20%. That said, ConocoPhillips is down around 25% or so over the past 12 months, falling even more than the price of oil. That makes complete sense. ConocoPhillips is a pure-play energy producer. So the top and bottom lines of its income statement are entirely reliant on the price of the commodities it sells. The dividend has a history of being a little on the volatile side, too. And, in fact, it was cut in 2016 during the deep energy downturn at the time. Even if you have a particularly strong stomach and a positive outlook for oil, this is a more aggressive investment option. Chevron has a dividend yield of about 5%. The company has increased its annual dividend for a huge 38 consecutive years. The average annualized dividend increase over the past five years was a slow and steady 6% or so. Chevron's stock is down 15% or so over the past year, slightly less than the drop in oil prices. Again, this more modest decline makes sense. Chevron is an integrated energy company, which means that it produces oil, transports oil, and processes oil. Having exposure across the energy value chain helps to soften the industry's inherent ups and downs because each segment of the industry operates just a little differently. On top of that, Chevron has a long history of operating in a conservative fashion, including making sparing use of leverage. That gives management the leeway to take on debt to support the business and dividend through energy downturns (that debt is repaid when oil prices recover). It is a good option for investors looking for energy exposure at just about any time, but the yield today makes it particularly attractive for conservative dividend lovers right now. EOG Resources has a dividend yield of roughly 3.7%. The dividend has been increased for eight years, and the average annualized increase over the past five years was 27%. The stock is down around 12% over the past year. Like ConocoPhillips, EOG's top and bottom lines are largely driven by commodity prices. While the dividend rose quickly when oil prices were increasing, the price reversal in oil could have a negative impact on the dividend potential here. That said, the core dividend has been more resilient than ConocoPhillips' dividend. Notably, EOG's debt-to-equity ratio is about half that of ConocoPhillips and roughly similar to that of Chevron. And EOG didn't cut its dividend in 2016, which suggests that investors looking for a pure-play driller will probably find EOG more attractive than ConocoPhillips. That said, Chevron still wins out for dividend consistency given its impressive streak of dividend increases. Even with just a quick look at the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF's top energy holdings, it is clear that dividend investors need to do their homework when picking stocks. Even a helpful screening process like the one used by the ETF may not turn up stocks that fit with your investment approach. For example, while ConocoPhillips is a fine company, EOG has proven to be a more consistent dividend payer in the upstream (production) energy niche. But if you are conservative by nature, Chevron's reliable dividend and lofty yield will probably win out over either of the ETF's other top energy holdings.
